    Fiona, 12, US

A: I think the language is really different. Each place in China has its own local language. But visitors from the north can hardly understand it! Luckily, China has done a good job in teaching people Mandarin (普通话), especially older people. My grandma didn’t speak Mandarin before, but she started to learn later. Now she is 64 and can speak Mandarin well!

It’s amazing that 1.4 billion people can speak one language!

    Wu Yu, 13, Fujian

I think the food is quite different. I grew up in Tianjin, a northern city. In 2012, I traveled to Hunan. The rice was not as sweet and delicious as in the north. Last year. I visited Hunan again. The rice was no different from that in my hometown, because people in Human can buy rice from the northeast on the Internet. I’ve experienced this, too! In Tianjin, we can easily buy fresh fruits from Hainan for a good price!

    Li Tao, 13, Tianjin

Sights in north and south is different. I live in Hangzhou, a warm and wet southern city. It has beautiful lake sights. But in north, the weather is usually drier.

In Hangzhou, I often see young people wearing hanfu while walking along the West Lake. But when I traveled to Xi’an, I saw people wearing herself, too! It seems that people from both the north and south love this clothing!

    Zhou Nan, 14, Zhejiang

    16. In Li Tao’s opinion, now people in Hunan can have better rice to eat easily because ________.

    A. farmers are better at modern farming B. lots of old people can speak Mandarin well

    C. people often travel around the country D. people can buy it from the northeast online

    17. According to Zhou Nan, what do people from both the north and south do?

    A. Wear Chinese traditional clothing. B. Wear the same colour of clothing.

    C. Enjoy wet and warm weather outdoor. D. Enjoy teaching different languages.

    18. According to the text, all the three Chinese students may agree that ________.

    A. people in the north really like the fresh and cheap fruits

    B. people in the north like the weather and sights in the south

    C. the differences between the north and the south are being fewer

    D. language is the biggest difference between the north and the south

Have you seen new plants starting to grow? Have you noticed that the days are getting longer, with more daylight to enjoy? These are signs of spring, promising the return of light, colour and warm days. Spring tells us that no matter how dark or cold things might be, better days are on the way.

What is hope? “Hope is the knowledge that things can get better,” says the writer Russell. When she was writing her latest book, How to be Hopeful, Russell spoke to people who had difficult moments, such as firefighters (消防员). “The firefighter said, ‘If we don’t fight it, there’s no chance of enjoying a new day.’” explains Russell.

However, hope is also about taking action. Russell says, “If you look at history, from winning the Second World War to people travelling thousands of miles away to build a new home, there is a long history of taking actions with hope.”

Why is hope good for you? Scientists say that having hope in difficult moments can help you worry less, feel calmer and improve your feelings. Research also shows that hope can help reduce pain.

What’s practical hope? Experiencing disappointment and feeling worried or sad are part of life. If it’s possible to see hope in these moments, you should; if it’s not, don’t worry. Dr Williamson calls this “practical hope”. “Life is a mess,” says Williamson. “We don’t need to always make others think you are fine, but we can realize how we feel, whether that’s sadness or anger, and pay attention to the opposite. You can’t change the fact that your brother or sister is bad to you, but you can do something kindly and friendly instead of making things worse. Even in the most terrible situations we can decide what we do and say to each other.”

    19. Why does the writer talk about spring in Paragraph 1?

    A. Because spring is very beautiful. B. Because spring brings us hope.

C Because spring is a warm season. D. Because spring has longer days.

    20. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to (指代)?

    A. The brave firefighter. B. The latest book.

    C. The difficult moment. D. The famous writer.

    21. According to Williamson, if you are sad or angry, you should ________.

    A. try to be happy or calm B. try to grow more plants

    C. enjoy being sad or angry D. enjoy making more friends

    22. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the text?

    A. To show the greatness of hope. B. To tell stories of fighting for hope.

    C. To introduce real actions with hope. D. To encourage us to do things with hope.

    C

① How do we know about things that happened thousands of years ago, when there were no videos or photos? One answer is written records. The earliest written records of Chinese culture are famous as oracle bone inscriptions.

② More than 3, 000 years ago, ancient Chinese people liked to ask fortune teller (占卜师) about the future. For example, what will the weather be like next week? Where should I go to make money? Will my wife give birth to a boy or a girl? Will my son’s leg get better soon? Will we win the war this time? From work to love, from big things to little things, ancient people asked questions about many things. The fortune teller would write the question on an oracle bone (甲骨), make it hot, and then read the cracks (裂纹) in it to find an answer.

③Tens of thousands of oracle bones have been found so far. They can tell us lots of things about how people lived in ancient times in China. They help us understand the beginning of Chinese thought, and know where our culture comes from.

④The oracle bones not only tell us about ancient Chinese culture, but also are important to understand the growth and development of the written form of the Chinese language. “Many of the Chinese words we use today are similar to those used 3, 000 years ago. They also show the beautiful and special parts of a language that has been passed down year after year.” said Chen Nan, a teacher at Tsinghua University.

⑤In 2017, oracle bone inscriptions were added to the Memory of the World Register. They are a valuable memory of ancient China.

    23. From the text, we can learn oracle bone inscriptions are ________.

    A. written records B. video tapes C. ancient photos D. valuable books

    24. What did Chinese use oracle bones to do about 3, 000 years ago?

A To make the sick get better as soon as fast. B. To get a better chance of having a clever boy.

    C. To make sure that people would win the war. D. To tell things that would happen in the future.

    25. The underlined sentences in Paragraph 4 are written to show the oracle bone inscriptions are ________.

    A. meaningful B. famous C. interesting D. changeable

    26. Which of the following, best shows the structure of the text?

    A.  B.

    C.  D.

    D

Hana lived in America, and being patient was not what she did best.

So when her grandmother told her she could have a baby cat four weeks later, it sounded like forever(永远)to Hana.

“How will I know when four weeks is?” Hana asked impatiently.

          .” smiled her brother Randy.

    That sounded interesting.

    “How?”Hana asked.

“What does the moon look like now?” said Randy.

“It’s a full moon, silly,” Hana said.

“Will it still be full tomorrow?” said Randy.

Hana thought for a while. “Well, almost. But it will be a little bit smaller. I think.”

“That’s right,” Randy said. “And the night after that, it will be a little smaller, and the night after that a little smaller still, and it’ll keep getting smaller until we can’t see it at all! And then it’ll come back when it’s just a thin and tiny moon, and it’ll get fatter and fatter until it’s a full moon again!”

“It takes four weeks to go from full moon to full moon. By the next full moon, it’ll be time to get your baby cat.” Randy continued.

Hana decided to draw the moon every day. Her first picture was round, full and golden. Then the moon started getting thinner.

“Say good night to the gibbous moon. That’s what the moon is called when it’s less than full but more than half.” Dad said one night.

“Gibbous, gibbous. . .” Hana sang softly. It was a good word.

Every day Hana drew more pictures. When the moon was covered with clouds, she drew clouds instead. Then a clear night came when there was no moon anywhere, so Hana drew a cat instead.

Now every night the moon got bigger and bigger. “You know Luna is another name for the moon.” her mom said.

“Luna, Luna, Luna,” Hana sang. It was a pretty name.

Finally the night came when Hana covered her paper with a huge, round, golden moon, just like her first picture.

The most exciting moment came—Hana chose a black baby cat. It was black like the night and its eyes shone like the moon. She named it Luna.

    27. Which of the following is the best to fill in the blank “      ”?

    A. Use the paper. B. Use the moon. C. Use the watch. D. Use the calendar.

    28. Which of the following picture shows “the gibbous moon” according to the text?

    A.  B.  C.  D.

    29. In which order did Hana’s feelings change in the text?

    A. happy→impatient→interested→excited B. happy→excited→impatient→interested

    C. impatient→interested→happy→excited D. impatient→happy→excited→interested

    30. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

    A. Learning to Draw B. Waiting for Luna

C Choosing Baby Cats D. Watching a Full Moon

    六、任务型阅读。

    李华参加了介绍中国传统文化——舞狮的项目活动,请阅读以下他收集的相关材料,完成以下任务

Have you seen lions dancing on the streets? It happens at the beginning of each new year. These lions dance to the beat of a drum. But these are not real lions. They are dancers who are in lion clothes.

The lions are part of a tradition that is several hundred years old. This tradition was first started in China. It is meant to bring good luck in the coming year. In many Asian countries, the new year is celebrated with the new moon in January or February.

Usually a lion is made up of two dancers. One dancer controls the head. The other controls the tail. “I think of it as a sport,” says 16-year-old Anthony Huang. He is a member of the New York Chinese Freemasons Athletic Club. He acts as the lion’s head. The head can weigh 10 kilograms. Lion dancing is important to Anthony.

In the past, lion dancing was performed mostly by men. But it is different today. LionDanceMe is a lion dancing group. It is located in San Francisco, California. There are boys and girls on its team. They dance together.

Amanda Tang-Lee is 17 years old. She says anyone can learn lion dancing. “You have to have confidence that you can do it,” she says. Lion dancing will likely continue to change. But the teamwork spirit will never change. “We call it a family, “Amanda says proudly. “It’s really great because       .”
