It’s not common that a grandmother aged 89 is crowned Queen of Icebergs in North America, but when it does happen it’s quite the sight.
On a recent trip to Iceland, Judith Streng became that grandma after her son attempted to take a photograph of her siting on an ice structure that looked like a throne (宝座) at Diamond Beach in Jokulsarloo. Shortly after Streng sat down to pose, the piece of ice broke off and floated into the water.
“I thought it was safe. One girl had been on it and then two girls at the same time, and it was very secure with them. When I got on it, it started to shake and a wave was coming in. A very large wave came in and made the throne kind of shake, and I could tell that I was slipping off,” Streng told ABC News.
Streng’s story went hot after her 24-year-old granddaughter Catherine tweeted a text message exchange she had with her father about the incident. “My grandmother almost got lost at sea in iceland today!”
Catherine, who teaches English in Seoul, Korea, explained via Twitter that her father described the scene vividly. He has a PhD in English, and described the event in the following words, “She climbed to the throne after a wave had pulled back and left it briefly exposed on the beach. Then a wave washed in and removed the ice throne, rocking it from side to side. When the wave left, it lifted the throne and carried her out into the sea with the tide.”
Luckily for the Streng family, Randy, a licensed boat captain from Florida with knowledge of water rescue strategies, witnessed the whole thing, and was able to save the day.
24.Where was the grandma when her son was taking a picture for her?
    A.On a crown. B.In an iceboat. C.On an iceberg. D.At Throne Beach.
25.How did Catherine spread this accident?
A.By drawing a vivid picture. B.By exposing the text message.
C.By exchanging Twitter accounts. D.By talking with her father in Seoul.
    26.Who saved the grandmother?
    A.Catherine. B.Judith Streng. C.Randy. D.Her son.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Taking pictures must be very dangerous B.An optimistic family who love icebergs
C.The licensed boat captain went hot slowly D.A grandma floated out to the sea on an iceberg

Finding fruits and vegetables at your typical grocery store that have been grown without the extensive use of pesticides can be difficult. Fortunately, The Environmental Working Group(EWG) has done all of the work for you in finding healthy and pesticide—free produce.
EWG has created the 2018 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce, which helps shoppers to find uncontaminated produce. Many consumers do not realize that pesticide residues(残留) are very common on conventionally grown produce products, even after they have been washed or peeled. Because of this, EWG has created their series of guides to lead consumers to safer food choices.
In order to create these guides, EWG analyzed the USDA pesticides tests, which found a total of 230 different pesticides and pesticides breakdown products on thousands of produce samples. Analyzing this information, EWG observed the big differences of the amount of pesticides found from product to product.
The guide’s two main components are two compiled lists highlighting the cleanest and dirtiest produce concerning pesticides. These two lists, Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen, show consumers how certain foods continue to carry trace amounts of pesticides with them all the way to the grocery store shelves, while others make it to your kitchen virtually pesticide-free.
Some of the highlights from their analyses included the following findings:
More than one-third of strawberry samples analyzed in 2016 contained 10 or more pesticide residues and breakdown products.
Spinach(菠菜) samples had, on average, almost twice as much pesticide residue by weight compared to any other crop.
No single fruit sample from the Clean Fifteen tested positive for more than four pesticides.
“With EWG's guide, consumers can fill their fridges and fruit bowls with plenty of healthy conventional and organic produce that isn't contaminated with multiple pesticide residue,” said Sonya Lunder, a senior analyst in EWG.
Only 25 years ago, the National Academy of Sciences raised concerns about exposure to poisonous pesticides in our food, yet consumers still consume a mixture of pesticides every day in America.
28.Why did EWG create the 2018 Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce?
A.To analyze the USDA pesticides tests.
    B.To advertise organic produce.
    C.To warn some food companies.
D.To help consumers make safer choices.
29.What is the result from the analysis of the USDA pesticides tests?
    A.All the samples are polluted.
    B.230 pesticides are banned.
    C.Pesticide amounts vary in products.
    D.All strawberries are poisonous.
30.Where are shoppers most likely to find spinach?
A.Dirty Dozen list. B.Organic food advertisement.
C.Clean Fifteen list. D.Safer food list.
31.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
    A.All conventional produce is safe.
B.No pesticides were used on crops 25 years ago.
    C.Consumers never worry about pesticides.
    D.Produce safety remains a problem.
    D
Until the 1990s coffee was rarely served in China except at luxury hotels aimed at foreigners. When Starbucks opened its first shop there in 1999, it was far from clear that the country’s tea-drinkers would take to such a different and usually more costly source of caffeine. Starbucks tried to attract customers to coffee’s bitter taste by promoting milk and sugar-heavy concoctions(调和) such as Frappuccinos.
But coffee has become fashionable among the middle class in China. Starbucks now has about 3, 800 shops in China more than in any other country outside America. Statista, a business-intelligence portal(门户网站), says the roast coffee market in China is growing by more than10 %year. Starbucks and its rivals see big opportunities for expanding there.
So too, however, do home-grown competitors. A major new presence is Luckin Coffee, Beijing- based chain. Since its founding less than two years ago, it has opened more than 2,300 shops. On May 17th Luckin’s initial public offering on the Nasdaq stockmarket raised more than $570m,giving it a value of about $4bn.
Luckin’s remarkable growth is sign of change. No longer do Chinese consumers see coffee as such a luxury. Most of Luckin’s shops are merely kiosks where busy white-collar workers pick up their drinks, having ordered them online. Super-fast delivery can also be arranged through the company’s app. Independent coffee shops are springing up. The growth is striking considering the country’s reputation for its tea-drinking culture where many residents like to relax in teahouses sipping tea served gracefully.
But the two markets are different. The teahouses tend to cater to older people who like to spend long hours playing mahjong and gossiping. At the coffee shops it is rare to see anyone over 40. Young people use them for socialising, but much of their interaction is online -sharing photos of their drinks and of the coffee-making equipment. An option on the Chinese rating app Dianping allows users to search for wanghong ("internet viral") coffee houses.
32.How did Starbucks try to appeal to Chinese consumers?
A.By reducing the price slightly. B.By introducing the benefits of coffee.
C.By making coffee taste not so bitter. D.By promoting its products effectively.
33.What does Luckin Coffee’s growth suggest?
A.People tend to like coffee’s bitter taste.
B.People’s views on coffee-drinking have changed.
C.People in China can afford coffee now.
D.Tea is no longer part of Chinese culture.
34.What does the underlined word “kiosks” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Places where people can drink beer.
B.Restaurants where food can be taken away.
C.Shops aimed at people who like drinking.
D.Small shops where drinks are sold.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Coffee is taking off in China.
    B.Tea-drinking is not popular.
C.Coffee or tea, which do you prefer?
D.Coffee has become people’s favorite in China.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
    根据下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
    Why do Hiccups Happen?
Most of us have been hic, hic, hiccupping since before we were born. Hiccups are the loud noises our throats make without us wanting them to. 36 But why do we hiccup, and how can we stop them?
According to WebMD, hiccups start in our diaphragm—which is the muscle between our lungs and stomach that helps us to breathe. When we breathe in, our diaphragm pulls down to let air into our lungs. 37 But if something irritates our diaphragm, it can cause it to spasm(痉挛). The spasm makes us inhale air suddenly. When this air hits our voice box, our vocal cords immediately shut, creating a “hic” sound.
38 Swallowing air while sucking on candy—or drinking fizzy drinks like Coca-Cola, or too much alcohol—can also cause us to hiccup. Emotions—like being nervous, excited, or even stressed—cause hiccups too.
But how can we get rid of them? 39 The official recommendations from the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) say that holding your breath for a short time is a good idea. Breathing into a paper bag is another option the NHS gives, as well as pulling your knees up to your chest and leaning forward, or very slowly drinking ice-cold water. 40 However, if your hiccups still haven't gone away after two days, WebMD says you’ll need to contact a doctor.
    A.More haste, less speed.
B.It then relaxes when we breathe out again.
C.They can be funny or embarrassing depending on where we are.
D.Some of the reasons we hiccup include eating too quickly or too much.
E.They get in the way of breathing, eating, or sleeping comfortably.
F.Some people believe holding your breath and slowly counting to 10 can work.
G.Stranger suggestions from the NHS include biting on a lemon or tasting vinegar.

Rick Howells is the arborist (树木栽培家) for the Shade Tree Commission in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He manages the care of all of the trees in the city, 56 (include) the trees that line the streets.
Trees can make a city prettier, sure. But that’s not 57 (they) only advantage, Howells explained. Trees can save lives by absorbing (吸收) 58 (pollute) from cars and  factories. Trees can also help slow climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, one of the main 59 (cause) of climate change. In cities, trees provide a home 60 birds and bees. They also offer a calming effect on the community. That is one reason why there 61 (be) less crime in tree-lined areas.
“Trees must be trimmed (修剪) and, if they are diseased, cut down so that they don’t become a risk to the community. It isn’t 62 easy task,” Howells said. “You have to know types of knots (结) for the ropes and 63 (difference) kinds of rigging (索具).” Rigging equipment is tied to trees so that they can be trimmed and cut 64 (safe).

    The magic necklace
Josie went to her grandmother’s house for summer holiday. One day, when Grandma was making lunch, Josie felt bored and wanted to do something interesting. She saw an old and dusty box in her room. She was digging through her grandmother’s things in the box when she found a necklace with a big purple stone in it. The stone, shining with inner light, was so beautiful that she loved it so much. She sat down on the floor, stared at the stone and became lost in the necklace, trying to see what was within the stone.
However, she did not notice the world around her became foggy and began to fade. The lines between worlds began to be unclear, and when she finally shook her head and tried to wake up, she found that she was in another world! She was surprised and excited, because things had become so different in this world.
The sky looked strange, because it was purple. The grass was blue, and the trees around her were tall. Bugs of bright colours and different shapes flew around her, and the light came from a pair of suns in the sky. Nearby, pink water flowed at a black sand beach. Everything was so different and interesting.
She walked around for a time, amazed by what she saw. She walked along the beach, feeling the black sand between her toes. She drank some pink water, which was sweet, like sugar water, and then she ran through the forest, where trees smiled at her when she passed. It was all so strange and beautiful.
After several hours travelling in this magic land, Josie began to feel hungry and tired. Suddenly she realized that she didn’t know how to get home. She was frightened and worried about what to do. After thinking for a few moments, she realized that the necklace must be the key to the world she belonged.
    Paragraph 1:
She grabbed (抓) the necklace around her neck and looked into it.

M: Well, madam, most of the farms that supply the big supermarkets spray their fruits and vegetables with chemicals to protect them from insects and preserve them during the long trips from the farm to the supermarket.
    W: Oh, that sounds gross(非常糟糕的).
M: Also, these animals are given special medications that make them grow bigger and produce milk and eggs quicker. They might make the food cheaper, but they’re probably not very good for us.
W: Wow, I had no idea. I don’t want my kids to eat that stuff.
M: I don’t blame you. There are alternatives to the big supermarkets, though. Here is a list of farmers’ markets in your area that offer delicious, reasonably-priced meat and produce vegetables that don’t contain any artificial ingredients or harmful chemicals.
    W: Thank you so much!
    15.A 16.B 17.C
W: You look a little down. Are you OK? M: I’m not sure.I’m always tired, but I sleep a lot. W: How long has this been going on? M: About a month.I’m in low spirits, too. W: Are you having fun with friends? M: No,I don’t feel like going out. W: You know, you might have culture shock. M: What’s that? W: When you live in another country,it can be a big shock to your system.People get different symptoms. For example, some people eat a lot, some people don’t eat enough. M: How do you know so much about it? W: I got it when I moved to Hong Kong. But it went away after a few months.

People in the United States honor their parents with two specific days: Mother’s Day, on the Second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June. During these days, Americans show love and respect for their parents. Parents raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give their children love and care. These two days give us a chance to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with childcare.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day, people often wear carnations. And families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor picnics for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children can make them in school. Many people make cards for their own parents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”.

    66.Dear Mingming,
Thank you for writing to me. I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble getting used to your new school life in England. I'd like to give you some advice on how to face this situation.
Firstly, it is important for you to work hard at English, which can give you more opportunities to communicate with others. Secondly, it can be a good idea to make some friends with your classmates and get along well with them. They can help you forget your loneliness and solve some of your problems. Thirdly, you'd better take an active part in all kinds of activities to enrich your life.
I hope my advice will be useful to you. I'm looking forward to your good news.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    67.Paragraph 1:
She grabbed (抓) the necklace around her neck and looked into it. Inside it, she could see the image of herself sitting beside the box in her room, staring into the necklace. How could that be? Was all this her imagination? She fixed her eyes on the necklace and stared harder, and the world became unclear once more. The sight of the wonderland and everything surrounding her faded, slowly becoming the room once more. Then, she was back. Josie took a deep breath and set the necklace aside, not daring to look at it any more.
    Paragraph 2:
Filled with many questions, she rushed downstairs to tell her grandmother what she’d seen. But Grandma seemed to know. She just smiled when Josie asked her questions like whether she had gone to the magic world as a little girl. Grandma didn’t say anything but just let Josie keep the necklace. Someday, Josie might try to go back again with her grandma. But for then, it was lunchtime. All the mysterious things there would have to wait, because moving between two worlds was really tiring and she was hungry already!
