I was that girl you would see alone.
I’d sit alone on the bus, at a table in the lunchroom and the library. I loved reading, but I knew it was my ____1____, a way to look busy and not like I was being alone. I didn’t want to appear as though I had no ____2____— which was basically true.

In the following weeks, it wasn’t just Jane who looked to see if she could sit next to me—I looked for her, too. Little by little, we began to talk about school and other things and,____6____, ourselves. We soon became best friends.
Isn’t it amazing how overnight your life can ____7____? I feel so different now. It only ____8____ one other person to make you feel as though you are no longer ____9____.
I no longer hide behind books—although I am still an enthusiastic reader. Jane also loves books, so we go to the library together, check out books, and _____10_____back and forth when we finish reading them. Then we take them back to the library and check out new ones. Born in America, I spoke English, not Chinese, the language of my ancestors. When I was three, my parents flashed cards with Chinese ____11____ at my face, but I pushed them aside. My mom believed I would learn when I was ____12____ . But the time never came.
On a Chinese New Year’s Eve, my uncle spoke to me in Chinese, but all I could do was to ____13____ at him, confused, scratching my head. “ Still can’t speak Chinese? ” He laughed at me, “ You can’t even buy a fish in Chinatown. ” “ Hey, this is America, not China. I’ll get some right now with or without Chinese. ” I replied and turned to my mom for permission. “Remember to ask for fresh fish, Xin Xian Yu,” she said, handing over a $20 bill. I ____14____ the words, running downstairs into the streets of Chinatown.
I found the fish stand surrounded in a sea of customers. “ I’d like to buy some fresh fish, ” I shouted to the ____15____ . But he ignored my English words and turned to serve the next customer. The laugh of the people behind increased with their impatience. With every ____16____ , the breath of the dragons (龙) on my back grew stronger — my blood boiling — forcing me to cry out. “Xian Sheng Yu, please. ” “ Very Xian Sheng, ” I repeated. The crowd burst into ____17____ . My face turned red and I ran back home ____18____ , except for the $20 bill I held tightly in my pocket.
Should I laugh or cry? They’re Chinese. I should feel right at home. Instead, I was the joke, a disgrace (丢脸) to the language. Sometimes, I laugh at my fish ____19____ , but, in the end, the joke is on me. Every laugh is a culture _____20_____ ; every laugh is my heritage (传统) fading away.

I was 11 when I asked my mum for piano lessons. We were in an economic crisis and she’d recently been ___21___ off. She said a polite “no”.
That didn’t discourage me. I drew a keyboard onto a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would ___22___ notes on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one—keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. I spent six months playing without touching a real piano. As my mum found I was serious about it, she bought me 10 lessons with borrowed money.
I still remember the first one. I was ___23___ by how organic the sound of the piano was, as I had become familiar with the artificial electronic sound. The teacher was trying to explain where middle C was, but I could ___24___ play all the major and minor scales.
I sat my grade one after eight lessons and got distinction. By the time I started secondary school, we couldn’t ___25___ lessons again, so I returned to my paper keyboard. I passed grade three, then grade five, practising only on my piece of paper.
For the grades above that, there’s an expectation that you add a certain sensitivity into your playing. The music teacher at my school said I could practise on the school’s grand piano. I would wake up at 5:30 am to get there in time and play until lessons started. I’d ___26___ lunch and then practise after school until the caretaker kicked me out. At home, I’d have dinner, do three hours of revision, and then mental practice until 1:00 am.
My school didn’t offer music A-level. I found the Purcell School for young musicians. The audition (试镜) was extremely ___27___ , and I felt overwhelmed. To my amazement, I was offered a place.
I had been told I had started playing too late to reach conservatoire (音乐学院) level, but when I left Purcell, I was awarded the senior piano prize. That was the point when I realized I wasn’t behind everyone else. I am now at the Guildhall School in London, where I was offered a scholarship. I feel proud: it’s been 10 years since I drew my paper piano and I’m at one of the world’s ___28___ conservatoires.
The irony is that I continue to do a lot of my practice away from the piano — what we call mental practice. It ___29___ key areas of the mind that are less readily accessed by piano playing alone. The paper piano helped stimulate my _____30_____ about how music works.

根据前文“Most worthwhile careers require some kind of specialized training.”
A. therefore因此;B. so这样,那样;C. though尽管;D. however然而。上文“Ideally, therefore, the choice of an occupation should be made even before the choice of a curriculum in high school.”
A. in case of以防,假如;B. for因为(补充说明的原因);C. because of因为;D. to朝向,趋向。根据本句上下文“most people make several job choices during their working live, partly ______ economic and industrial changes and partly to improve their positions.”
A. enter into sth.开始某事;B. participate in sth.参加(活动),参与;C. involve sb. in sth. 故选A项。
A. leave sth. for sb.给某人留下某物;B. fit for sb./sth. 根据前文“Young people should therefore enter into a broad flexible training program”,年轻人要参加灵活的培训项目,才能使自己适合某个职位。
根据“ a single job.
根据后文“about the occupational world or themselves for that matter, choose their lifework on a hit-or-miss basis.
A. with和,带着;B. by靠近,经过;C. on在……
根据后文“Others stick to work in which they are unhappy and for which they are not fitted.” 根据前文“choose their lifework on a hit-or-miss basis.”
A. stick to sth. 根据上文“Some drift from job to job.” 故选A项。
A. its它的;B. their他们的;D. the定冠词。 故选A项。
A. to have disregarded不定式的完成式(非谓语动作发生在谓语动词动作之前);B. to disregard不定式(表将来,表目的);C. disregarding现在分词(表主动);D. disregard动词原形。
A. such这样的(such a/an + adj. + a/an + n.)。
A. moreover此外,而且;B. otherwise否则;C. nevertheless然而;D. still然而,不过。根据前文“The imagined or real prestige of a profession or a "white-collar" job is no good reason for choosing it as a life's work.” 故选A项。
根据前文“The imagined or real prestige of a profession or a "white-collar" job is no good reason for choosing it as a life's work. Moreover, these occupations are not always well paid.”可知,这些工作不像想象中那么好,有很多缺点;“Since a large proportion of jobs are in mechanical and manual work”而且这些工作主要是机械和体力劳动。
A. out of以(某事物)为起源,来源;B. towards朝着……方向;C. for表示接受某事物,从某事物中受益;D. from over无此短语。根据后文“Some people desire social prestige, others intellectual satisfaction. 故选A项。
A. (take) advantage of充分利用;B. patience耐心;C. 根据前文“Some want security”以及“some…others….”
根据本句话“its demands as well as its ______”可知,空处是与“demands要求”并列的工作的两个方面:是抽象的要求和回报。故选B项。
