Exhausted, I returned home from work. I found the front door was ___11___ open and I felt a little scared. Did I carelessly forget to lock it after I left? I looked around tensely to see what could be ___12___. Nothing? Why would someone come into my home only to ___13___ with nothing? After searching every inch, I realized that everything was where I had left it. No overturned cushions, broken lamps, or drawers emptied out on the carpet. Feeling much ___14___, I looked out my oversized window of my dining room at Ms. Sullivan’s house. Jimmy, the little boy next door was visiting her. Jimmy cared a lot about Ms. Sullivan and was very concerned about her health after she became ill. She used to guard Jimmy when he was just a baby.

Talking for a while, Ms. Sullivan began to get very tired so I gave her my phone number in case she ____20____ needed help, and left her home. I thought about how sweet it was for little Jimmy to be so concerned for Ms. Sullivan. I got home, laughing at how nervous I was that morning about what had happened over nothing. I walked past the dining room and noticed my roses sitting in the vase were missing. Without a second thought, I glanced out the window at Ms. Sullivan’s house. With a smile on my face, I turned off the light in the room and went to sleep.
The next morning my doorbell rang. I opened the door and Jimmy was there…

A Game of Light and Shade
It was a sunny day. I had gone up and down the tower when, outside the door at the foot, a blind man came toward me. In a moment, he disappeared up the stairs. I looked at the sign that said “To the Tower”, and decided to follow him.
I caught up with him in the ticket office. There I was ___71___ to see the attendant(工作人员)selling him a ticket as if he were any other visitor. Then, with the ticket in one hand and touching the wall with the fingers of the other, the blind man reached the stairs leading to the hallway.
“That man is blind. What would a blind man climb up the tower for?” I said to the attendant, expecting him to show some ___72___, but he didn’t answer.
“Not the ___73___ certainly,” I said. “Perhaps he wants to jump.”
I bought a ticket and ___74___ up the stairs. The man hadn’t gone as far as I ___75___. A third of the way up the tower, I heard his steps. I slowed down and followed him at a little ___76___. He stopped from time to time. When he got to the balcony(阳台), I was a dozen steps behind. As I reached it, I saw him at the corner of the tower.
At last, after ten minutes, I ___77___ him. “Excuse me,” I said as politely as I could, “but I am curious to know why you came up.”
He smiled. “Coming up the stairs, you will notice how not just light but sun ___78___ into the tower through the narrow windows here and there, so that you can feel the ___79___—the cool stairs suddenly become quite warm—and how up here behind the wall there is shade, but as soon as going opposite a window you can find the sun. There is no place so good as this for feeling the difference between light and shade. It is not the first time I’ve come up.”
The blind man seemed quite ____80____, just like a child who was enjoying his favorite games. He told me the truth that blind men can also find the beauty in life although they cannot enjoy the sights of the world.

One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head buried in her arms. I walked toward her and quietly asked what was wrong. “Oh, nothing,” came a soft reply. “I’m just too ____86____.” The coach told her that at her height she would probably never get to play for a top ranked team, much less offered a scholarship. So she should stop dreaming about college.
She was heartbroken and I sensed her ____87____. I asked her if she had talked to her dad about it yet. She told me that her father said those coaches were wrong.
