    Five Star Yellowstone Tour
Accompanied by typical Jin opera music, a red-faced performer with a long beard
showed up at the hall of a high school in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. All the students in the
hall stood up and craned (伸长) their necks to get a better look. In their eyes, Jin opera was
    something from the past.
They are not alone. It goes without saying that kids nowadays are much more familiar
with popular music than traditional opera, which is why performing artist Wu Lingyun,
together with his colleagues, goes to campuses to promote the art.
Wu Lingyun is best known for his role as Guan Gong, a general during the late Han
    Dynasty period.
Wu began playing the role in 1985, at the age of 21, and has been associated with it ever
    since.
Wu was significantly influenced by his parents, both of whom are also famous Jin opera
performers. With a natural talent for performing and great effort, Wu was soon recognized by
audiences and later awarded the Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award in 2000, the highest
award for Chinese drama performing arts.
Given Wu’s considerable fame, one might think he would now prefer to enjoy a life of
leisure. However, this is far from the case. Deep down, Wu has a big dream. He pictures a
growing future for Jin opera. Wu expected more chances for more people to get to know
about the art, hoping Jin opera could become a worldwide art.
Wu has also made some changes to the traditional art to bring it up-to-date. “Jin opera
should keep pace with the times if we want to bring it back to life and get the young
generation to accept it”, he says, “An art without life can never survive”.
24.How did the students react to the performance at the hall?

Every year, as many as 50, 000 elephants in Africa are killed illegally for their tusks (象
牙). Now scientists have improved DNA methods that allow them to match up elephant tusks,
and help track down criminals that are selling them.
Even though it’s against the law, African elephants have long been killed by criminals
for their tusks. Other people, called “traffickers”, buy the tusks and transport them out of the
country on a ship. The traffickers resell the tusks for even more money, usually in Asia.
Elephant tusks can sell for about $1, 000 a kilogram.
Starting this fall, primary and middle school students in China will have at least one
weekly course on labor education, according to a new curriculum standard released by the
    Ministry of Education (MOE).
Labor education ranges from household chores to on-campus labor and community
volunteer services, generally 3 types according to the new standards: the first refers to
everyday chores, including cleaning, organizing, cooking, and using and maintaining home
appliances (家电); next is productive labor, including agriculture, making traditional
In the past, it was hard to catch the criminals. Usually by the time the dead animals were
found, the illegal hunters had been far away. And when traffickers were caught with elephant
tusks, it was impossible to say where the tusks came from. Traffickers usually hide them in
tricky ways inside shipments of other products. That means that only about 10% of tusks
from illegally killed elephants are ever found.
Several years ago, scientists led by Dr. Samuel Wasser figured out a new way to solve
the problem. Using elephant waste, they built a list of the DNA of almost all elephants in
    Africa.
Now when elephant tusks are found on a ship in another country, DNA tests can show
where they came from. This information can trigger quick action in the country where the
animals were killed. It can also help the police discover patterns in the ways the illegal
    hunters and traffickers work.
Dr. Wasser is hopeful that the method of using DNA information from elephants to track
illegally killed wildlife will soon be adopted to help protect other kinds of animals and break
    up more criminal groups.
handicrafts (手工艺品), and applying new technologies such as 3D printing; the third type is
service work, including volunteer work. The new curriculum also calls for a week of
extra-curricular and off-campus activities designed for labor education once every school
    year.
A recent study showed that primary and middle school students in China only spend an
average of 12 minutes a day on chores, compared to 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in
South Korea and 30 minutes in France. Many countries start students’ labor education at a
young age. Finland begins to develop students’ life skills in primary school. Spinning,
woodworking, cooking and other craftsmanship classes are offered. In Germany, pupils have
two labor classes per week. Electronics, office technology, sewing, housekeeping, and career
    guidance are all taught there.
Adding labor education was out of concern that the country’s youngsters do too little
housework and look down on manual labor (体力劳动) jobs. Due to great academic pressure,
schools tend to put their academic curricula on the top, and parents sometimes see household
chores as distractions. But, according to the MOE, labor education must be strengthened to
help students develop social values, an interest in labor and finally an all-around
    development.
28.Why do scientists use DNA information from elephants?
