The Complete Guide to Alberta’s Icefields Parkway
    Introduction
The 144-mile Icefields Parkway, or Highway 93, is one of Canada’s most scenic road trip routes and is a must for visitors to Alberta. It is popular among visitors, and has a lot of viewpoints where you can see glaciers (冰川), waterfalls, lakes, rivers, forests, and valleys. The parkway starts in the town of Jasper, in Jasper National Park, and travels south to near Lake Louise, in Banff National Park. Some travellers will go to the parkway from the southern end, though. The Icefields Parkway is open throughout the year, but most travellers will prefer to drive it in the warmer months.
Stops to Make Along the Way
Athabasca Falls: The 75-foot waterfalls are not exceptionally high, but they roar with a large volume of water, making them some of the most impressive falls in the Canadian Rockies.
Sunwapta Falls: Fed by the Athabasca Glacier, the Sunwapta Falls are divided into the upper and lower sections. The upper falls are easily accessible, but you need to hike a short distance to get to the lower falls. The lower falls are definitely worth the walk if you want to escape (逃离) the crowds in the summer. Sunwapta Falls are about 34 miles from Jasper.
    Where to Get Supplies
If you’re spreading this road trip over more than one day, stock up on snacks in Jasper or Lake Louis and fill up your tank there, too. There are no major towns between Jasper and Lake Louise. In the summer, there are a few places to eat and stay along the way, but prices tend to be high because of the lack of competition and the area’s remoteness.
Want to go there to have fun? Please contact us for more information.

    23. Why does the author advise tourists to Highway 93 to prepare enough snacks?
    A. There are no towns along the way. B. The food in Jasper is very expensive.
    C. There are no places to eat along the way. D. The prices are not cheap for the remoteness.

Jay Hewitt completed the Ironman race in under 14 hours despite having gone through 2 brain surgeries and a year of chemo (化疗). His inspiration? His 7-year-old daughter named Hero. Hewitt, 39, said he first saw an Ironman race on TV in 1989 and recalled thinking to himself “they must be superhuman”. It never crossed his mind that he could do something like that.
After his daughter’s birth in 2015, the memory of seeing that competition popped into his mind. Hewitt decided he would compete in an Ironman when she was around 10 years old to show his daughter she can do anything she sets her mind to. Then in 2018, when Hero was around three years old, Hewitt was diagnosed with terminal (晚期的) brain cancer. So, he had to start training earlier than he had planned.
“My first day of chemo therapy in August 2019 was the first day I started my Ironman training,” Hewitt said. On October 9, Hewitt started in Newport Beach’s Back Bay with a 2-mile swim. During the race, he couldn’t digest (消化) food or water, but pushed through the sickness. The stomach pain was serious. When he came around the corner to the finish line, there were hundreds of people there cheering him on.
Hewitt said seeing his daughter made everything worth it. I didn’t have much energy, but I gave my wife a kiss, handed my wife and daughter flowers and got down on my knees to say to Hero, “If I can do it, you can do it. Dream big and never give up hope.” I got to tell her that it was really hard for me but I had thought about coming home to her, and that she had given me the strength to finish.
    24. Which of the following was regarded impossible by Hewitt before 1989?
    A. He would suffer from cancer. B. He might one day be a superman.
    C. He would compete in an Ironman race. D. He could become the best in an Ironman race.
    25. What happened in 2018?
    A. Hewitt’s daughter was born. B. Hewitt decided to train for his competition.
    C. Hero was diagnosed with deadly brain cancer. D. Hero learned she could do anything by herself.
    26. What can be learned about Hewitt’s race?
    A. It ended in failure. B. It worsened Hewitt’s cancer.
    C. It was hard but Hewitt made it at last. D. It was easy because of Hewitt’s hard training.
    27. Where was Hewitt’s strength for the race mainly from?
    A. The desire to see and inspire his daughter. B. The determination to beat the terrible cancer.
    C. The support of the people cheering him on. D. The happiness of reunion with his wife.

A 71-year-old Swedish man “can’t put into words” how thankful he is for the new technology that quickly flew him into the small category of only ten percent of people who survive sudden heart stopping.
The man now has made a full recovery and returned home, after the speedy delivery of a defibrillator (除颤器)—via autonomous drone (无人驾驶飞机). The company behind the drone pilot project says it’s the first time in medical history, a drone has played an important part in saving a life during a heart stopping.
He was in his driveway when the attack happened. Normally, you have about ten minutes to get help in such a situation. Luckily, a telephone call was immediately placed requesting emergency services and he lived in a region that had partnered with Everdrone’s innovative life-saving programme called EMADE (Emergency Medical Aerial Delivery service). EMADE drones delivered a defibrillator to the scene—and the amount of time from the alarm (警报) until the defibrillator was safely delivered at the doorstep of the incident address was just over three minutes.
Even luckier, a doctor happened to be driving by and stopped to see if he could help. “I was on my way to work at the local hospital when I saw a man collapsed in his driveway and I immediately rushed to help,” says Dr. Mustafa Ali. After the ambulance arrived, the patient was rushed to the hospital.
The man said, “If it wasn’t for the drone I probably wouldn’t be here.”
275,000 patients in Europe and 350,000 in the US, suffer from heart stopping annually. About 70% of heart stopping occur in private homes without defibrillators on site. The chance of survival decreases by 7-10% with each minute following the collapse (突然倒下)—and as a result, the current survival rate among heart stopping patients is merely 10%.
    28. How’s the 71-year-old Swedish man now?
    A. He is much better in hospital. B. He is very fine at home.
    C. He still needs a defibrillator. D. He’s made a recovery in hospital.
    29. How long did the old man wait for to be saved with a defibrillator?
    A. About 20 minutes. B. About 10 minutes.
    C. About 8 minutes. D. About 4 minutes.
    30. Why was Mustafa Ali able to help the old man?
    A. He was there by accident. B. People called him for help.
    C. He saw a drone with a defibrillator. D. People rushed to him for help.
    31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. Most people in Europe and the US die from heart stopping.
    B. Saving people with heart stopping quickly is important.
    C. Most people can’t afford expensive defibrillators.
    D. It’s necessary for every family to prepare for a defibrillator.
    D
It is calculated that some of the world’s 7,000 languages are in danger of getting extinct. “Sor example, Ainu, a language in Japan, is now seriously threatened, with only 10 native speakers remaining,” said lead study author Tatsuya Amano at the University of Cambridge in England.
The scientists found that 25 percent of the world’s languages are threatened (威胁). After identifying where the endangered (濒危的) languages were, they looked for any environmental and social or economic factors those languages might have in common, such as poor areas or rapid population growth. “We find that at the global scale, language speaker declines are strongly linked to economic growth—that is, declines are particularly occurring in economically developed regions,” said Amano.
“One important finding of this new study is that languages in the tropics and Himalayan region are likely to be increasingly threatened in the near future, because these regions still have many local languages with a small number of speakers, and at the same time are experiencing rapid economic growth,” said Amano.
Economic growth may endanger languages for a variety of reasons. For instance, speakers of endangered languages may view another more popular language as offering economic opportunities, and thus abandon their own languages. “There are other important factors that might endanger languages,” said the researchers. For instance, policies regarding how languages are used and taught in schools can be very different among countries and even within each country, and these factors may explain more detailed patterns in language endangerment.
Amano suggested it could be possible to forecast (预见) future threats to the diversity (多样化) of languages. “There exists detailed information on future changes in the environment, economies and climates (气候),” Amano said. “Using such information, together with the findings of this study and further analysis, we would like to understand what will happen to the world’s languages, where it will happen and which languages will be threatened in particular.”
    32. What can we know about Ainu?
    A. It has changed little over the years. B. It threatens Japanese language.
    C. It is a local language in Japan. D. It is put under protection.
    33. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
    A. What should be taught in schools. B. What might endanger a language.
    C. How economic growth is achieved. D. How a language becomes popular.
    34. What does Amano mean in the last paragraph?
    A. We must take action to save the environment. B. More and more languages will get missing.
    C. It will be easier to learn language changes. D. Factors threatening languages will double.
    35. What can be inferred from the study?
    A. Over 7,000 languages have been threatened.
    B. Local language must be spoken in every school.
    C. It is possible to use only one language worldwide.
    D. The number of tropics’ local language speakers may become smaller in the future.

There are many things in senior middle school that I still remember clearly. I studied three years in a country school, which is faraway. However, it has a good environment and strict but kind teachers, so I loved the school and all my teachers very much. One Friday, just as we began to read books in reading class at our desks, our teacher, Mrs. Hill, said that she needed to be out of the classroom for a few minutes. She asked the class to read in silence while she was gone. And she said that those who didn’t read books in silence would have to answer her when she returned. It was well-known that Mrs. Hill was strict. So we had to be on our best behaviour.
But that Friday, Mrs. Hill hadn’t been gone for ten seconds before some students in the classroom started to talk. From one corner of the room I heard Josh ask Nick, “Can I trade my candies for your toy?” At the other end of the room I heard Samantha tell Kayla, “Let’s sit together on the bus for the museum field trip tomorrow.” And so it went all around me, until about half of the students communicated with each other.
After a while, I, too, forgot about Mrs. Hill’s instructions. I turned back and asked my friend Liza, “Can I borrow your storybook and keep it for a day?” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, Mrs. Hill walked into the classroom. The whole class returned to silence immediately. And we were full of fear.
Mrs. Hill slowly looked around the classroom and said, “If you were talking while I was gone, then please stand up.” The guilt (内疚) suddenly weighed heavily on me. “I shouldn’t have talked while she was not in the classroom. And now I should be honest and admit my mistake bravely. This is what my parents have always told me,” I thought. Then, I summoned up (鼓起) my courage to stand up, worried about the punishment that waited for me. Then I looked around.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To my surprise, no one followed me and I was the only one in the classroom standing.

With Mrs. Hill’s encouragement, another student stood up.

    第一节
    One possible version:
    Notice
We are going to the amusement park this Sunday. We will gather at the gate of our school at 8 a.m., and then take a bus to the zoo and arrive at the park at about 9 a.m.
First of all, we will have a series of games and activities to encourage teamwork. Those who perform well will receive rich prizes. At 11 o’clock, we will take boats to the island for bird watching. After lunch, we are free to choose our favourite activities. At four o’clock in the afternoon, we will go back to the school by bus.
Please pay attention to your safety when playing.
    第二节
    One possible version:
To my surprise, no one followed me and I was the only one in the classroom standing. I lowered my head, alone and filled with fear. After looking around for a while, Mrs. Hill walked towards me. Strangely, she asked in a soft voice, “Why did you dare to stand up?” I said I wanted to be honest and that I realized what I had done was wrong. Unexpectedly, Mrs. Hill was quite amazed by my answer and praised me for that. Then she returned to the front of the classroom and explained why we should be honest.
With Mrs. Hill’s encouragement, another student stood up. Then more students followed until about half of the students stood up. Seeing it, Mrs. Hill praised us for our courage. Then, she asked us to sit down. We continued reading books. After we finished, Mrs. Hill reminded us to remember that everyone should be responsible for his behaviour. We all agreed with her. And I was happy that in a way I set a good example to my classmates.

    (Text 1)
W: What can I do for you, sir?
M: Well, you see, my room is right by the street. It’s so noisy at night that I can’t get to sleep. Could I change my room?
    (Text 2)
M: I’ve got two tickets for the opera on Saturday night. Are you free then?
W: Yes, but nothing interests me less than opera, I hardly watch it.
    (Text 3)
M: Linda, have you seen my pen? I need to write a letter with it. I looked everywhere in the room but didn’t find it.
W: I’ll find it for you later. Right now I need your help to fix the shelf.
    M: All right.
    (Text 4)
M: Have you been to the new restaurant in town? How about it?
W: Yes. Well, it took ages for the food to arrive. But when it finally arrived, I had to say that it was certainly worth waiting for.
    (Text 5)
M: Shall we stop and have some lunch?
W: Yeah, if you like. I don’t think about it. I’m happy working till four and leaving early.
    (Text 6)
W: Guess what? I get the part in the school play!
    M: Really? That’s great.
W: All this practice pays off finally.
M: Yes, it is. I can’t believe it!
W: And I’m really excited to be the main character!
M: I’m so proud of you. I can’t wait to see the play.
    (Text 7)
M: Hello, Mary. What makes you laugh so loudly?
W: Ha-ha, it’s so funny. I’m playing TikTok on my phone.
    M: TikTok? What’s that?
W: It’s an app. People can take and share videos on it. But the videos are all very short. I learned it from a Chinese student who lives next to my house. Now, it’s really popular in China. You can see its ads everywhere, no matter on the television or in the magazine.
M: Sounds interesting. What kind of videos does it have?
W: Many, such as the videos about training pets, travelling guides and make-up. But I like the cooking videos best.
M: So, you can cook very well now, right? I want to hold a home party next weekend. Would you like to help me?
W: All right. I’m not sure if I can do it well. Is that a big party?
M: Not really. There will be three couples besides us.
    (Text 8)
M: Hi, Mary, I just met your mother in the supermarket, Does she live with you now?
W: Yes. She has helped me a lot with my housework since my second daughter was born last year.
M: I see. But some old people are often against the idea of living with children. You know modern houses are much smaller than the sort of houses people used to live in the village.
W: That’s true. And when the grandmas get very old, the situation becomes even worse, doesn’t it?
M: Sure. It’s likely that old people may go into a nursing home, but it’s not as simple as that. Because of improvement in medical science, people live longer than before. The birth rate has fallen. This means that a small working population has to provide for a larger number of old people.
    W: That sounds serious.
M: Well, obviously a lot of money will have to be spent in building the nursing homes.
W: Oh. I think it’s still difficult to be carried out. But there’ll always be a solution then.
    (Text 9)
M: Have a seat, Mrs. Frank. I heard that you were in the Churchill Street at about 8:50 this morning, weren’t you?
W: Yes, I was on my way to the office.
M: OK. What do you know about the accident?
W: I was waiting for a colleague in front of a bank at that time, and I saw a small car heading for the crossroads of Churchill Street and York Road. The traffic lights on York Road changed to green, and a truck began to move forward. The driver of the car probably didn’t see that his traffic lights had changed to red and ran into the side of the truck.
M: I see. I have written down your statement, and you have to write your name on it.
    W: Fine.
M: Thanks for your time. We still need to learn some details from you later. Would you mind telling me your address?
    W: OK.
    (Text 10)
Taking daytime naps not only lets you feel relaxed but also helps you live longer. According to health experts, everyone has different needs of sleep. Usually, adults need 7 to 9 hours, while children need about three more hours than adults. As you reach adulthood, it may be challenging to take enough sleep. However, taking a nap might be the solution.
Recently, a new study found that getting some quick sleep during the afternoon is good for the heart. “Compared to people who don’t take naps, people who take naps once or twice a week have a lower risk of heart disease. But napping any more than that number won’t do much more,” said Nadine Hausler, the leader of the study.
While the finding may encourage people to take naps, Hausler told people that this was only an observational study. It remains to be seen how napping can affect the heart health. What’s more important is to have a good lifestyle.
