Living on the Florida Emerald Coast, people view a hurricane as a common thing. So it is not unusual for a family to have several full gas cans and bottled water stored in their houses all summer.
Though unwilling to evacuate from a hurricane, on September 15,my family was forced to leave our home for my grandfather's house several miles away. We spent the early part of that evening watching the hurricane draw closer on the Weather Channel. Around nine o'clock, a loud sound shook the house, turned over the roof and carried it off. Soon came an indoor rainstorm.
Realizing the damage, my grandfather began to be afraid. The storm had started, but he still ran out into the heavy rain and wind to see how much of the roof was left. We got him back inside. I had never seen him so scared. Mom finally asked him to lie down in his room.
The leak had progressed rapidly. It soon became a race against time to protect what was saved. Some people may think it necessary to save material things, but I hoped to save those items with emotional value, such as the photos. I still feared the storm, but I more feared the influence it brought.
The next morning, it started to clear up. Thankfully, my family weathered the storm, though the same could not be said for the house. Only the wooden beams remained, but inside many of his things were safe. My mom and I had worked tirelessly through the night.
It was late, but we were still unwilling to go to bed. We discussed the rebuilding of the house. Under the beautiful sky, we suggested looking after my grandfather more often in the future. After this disaster, I realized the truth that the hurricane itself was not so terrible if we loved each other.
4. Why do the people store full gas cans and bottled water?
A. To save much money. B. To watch a hurricane easily.
C. To protect their houses well. D. To be prepared for hurricanes.
5. How did the author's grandfather feel during the hurricane?
A. Frightened. B. Surprised. C. Calm. D. Angry.
6. What does the underlined word "weathered" in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Prepared well for. B. Waited patiently for.
C. Came safely through. D. Suffered seriously from.
7. What may the author learn from the experience?
A. Family love is powerful. B. Take things as they come.
C. Good health is over wealth. D. Lost time is never found again.

Delivering medical supplies to hard-to-reach places has been an issue for years. Worldwide, more than two billion people lack access to essential life-saving supplies, such as blood and vaccines(疫苗). In the African nation of Rwanda, for example, several remote health clinics do not have sufficient quantities of blood and other healthcare products. A company called Zipline is trying to address this problem. It uses drones(无人机)to transport medical supplies around Rwanda. A drone can now deliver medicine in 30 minutes.
Drones are also assisting emergency organizations after natural disasters. In 2015, for example, a powerful hurricane destroyed thousands of buildings in the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. Around 75,000 people lost their homes, and at least 15 died. After the storm, drones photographed the damage. These surveys helped emergency workers assess the situation quickly and answer important questions: Which areas were hardest hit? Were crops damaged? What roads were affected?
Drones are also helping to protect wildlife populations in parts of Africa and Asia. Every year, poachers(偷猎者) kill thousands of elephants, rhinos, and other endangered animals. To stop them; the environmental organization World Wildlife Fund is using drones to find where poachers are hiding and if they are carrying weapons. Equipped with infrared video cameras, drones can easily identify people and animals at night. These drones are not only helpful, they are affordable.
As well as finding poachers, drones can be used to track animals. Scientists at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU)plan to employ drones for an ambitious conservation project: documenting the world's wildlife. The long-term project will start with scientific surveys of animal populations. And animal species can then be identified using special software.
Ironically(讽刺地), a tool originally created for military use is increasingly being used to save lives instead of taking then. Drones have the potential to provide solutions that will benefit both humans and animals.
8. What does the text focus on?
A. Importance of saving lives.
B. Development of drones.
C. Applications of drones.
D. Ways to protect animals.
9. What can drones be used for according to Paragraph 2?
A. Helping predict disasters.
B. Providing data for evaluation.
C. Organizing emergency workers.
D. Reporting local weather.
10. What do the scientists at LJMU intend to do?
A. Track poachers.
B. Design new practical drones.
C. Record wild animals in detail.
D. Develop an assessing software.
11. What can be inferred about drones?
A. They need to be fitted with video cameras.
B. They are unavailable to ordinary people.
C. They should be limited to military use.
D. They have a promising prospect.

My challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15minutes every single day for a month.
Let me explain a bit, by telling you where the challenge came from. I have many things in common with my dad, like music taste and sense of humor, but sadly reading isn't one of them. I can happily spend a whole day with a book, but my dad can't read a book for longer than about 5 minutes. He reads emails, websites and papers for work, but not books. He's busy, so I think sitting down to read for just 15minutes a day is a good way to relax and to introduce him to reading.
My dad is not the only person who avoids books. I know lots of people would rather relax on their computers or in front of the TV. Everyone is different and has their own interests, but I think there are lots of benefits to reading, which screen﹣based activities don't have.
Firstly, it's better for your eyes. Looking at screens can be very stressful for your eye muscles, and clearly you should avoid looking at screens for an hour before bed, to get a good night's sleep.
One thing I personally love reading, is being transported to another world﹣I often forget the time or things around me! Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better.
I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people's point of view, and understand other people's decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling﹣you really can be inside someone else's head!
So give it a go! Take 15 minutes when you are waking up, going to bed, eating lunch, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book, or pass the challenge on to someone else? Good luck, and happy reading!
12. The author mentions his father in the text to show .

A. his personal experience
B. some scientific experiments
C. his father's personal advice
D. knowledge from books
14. The underlined word "it" in Paragraph 5 refers to .
A. helping readers sleep well
B. making readers feel relaxed
C. transporting readers to a different world
D. reminding readers of the real world
15. What is the author's attitude to reading?

I didn’t know how to do. Just then a passer-by volunteer to have it repaired. I offered himself some money in return his help. He refused, saying help others was what he should do. Hearing his word, I was deeply moved and decided to pass it on.
1.environmental→environmentally
2.whom→which

4.删除had
5.how→what
6.volunteer→volunteered
7.himself→him
8.return后加for
9.help→helping
10.word→words
It is also a good way to exercise,其中,指示代词it指代上句中的cycling,先行词为cycling,指物,所以关系代词用which。故whom改为which。
句中a chance to do“做……的机会”为固定结构。所以experienced 改为experience。故experienced 改为experience。
4. 考查时态。结合句中所给的时间yesterday,可知时态要用一般过去时。所以删掉had。故删除had。
5. 考查宾语从句连接代词。句意:我不知道做什么。结合情景,上文讲到我的自行车出了故障,可以推知,此处指我不知道做什么可以修好它。所以how改为what。what作do的宾语。故how改为what。
故himself改为him。
固定短语in return for“作为对……的回报”,所以,本句中要在return后加for。故在return后加for。
9. 考查非谓语动词。句意:他拒绝了并说帮助他人是他应该做的事。分析句子可知,主句为He refused, saying…在句中做伴随状语,而help others was what he should do在此做say的宾语,因其是以句子形式做宾语,所以是省略了that的宾语从句。
