At my primary school, I was one of the smartest kids there. I never studied, but always got perfect scores. I was also a prodigy in music according to myself. I could sing better than almost everyone else in my school. I was pretty sure that once I got to sixth grade, everyone would be surprised by me.
But actually, they weren’t.
When I arrived at my new class, I couldn’t wait to show everyone what I could do. However, there was always someone else who could do them better. My grades began to suffer. More talented(有天资的)girls often sang solo(独唱). I believed I wasn’t smart. I believed I wasn’t talented. I believed I was a failure.
Over the next two years, I had to work very hard. Every prize for the singing competition was given to me for hard work and effort. Grades were still very low but improving little by little. I worked really hard. However, I was never the best at everything.
I haven’t realized until recently that I really don’t have to be the best at everything. I was too hard on myself. In fact, when I did badly in a test, my classmates never laughed at me.
No one is perfect. There will probably always be someone better than me at something. Anyway, there are about seven billion people in this world. I will never be the number one at everything, and that’s really okay.

Sleep is a physical and mental(精神的)need. We all need to sleep, though the sleep hours are different from person to person. Doctors do not know why we need sleep, but they all agree that sleep is very important to us. Without enough sleep, the body may be weak.
One-third of adults have sleeplessness. There are over 80 kinds of sleep-related disorders(失调). However, other adults are lucky and have no sleeping problems. They sleep as soon as their heads hit the pillows. Do you sleep well? If you have sleeplessness, here are a few suggestions.
1. Make a timetable, and stick to it.
We need to sleep at regular times. If your bedtime and wake-up time change from day to day or on weekends, your sleep rhythms(节奏)aren’t predicted and the body doesn’t know how to act. So it’s important to have a regular wake-up time, even on weekends, vacations or after a night of poor sleep.
2. Don’t lie in bed awake.
“The best sleep tip you can give somebody is to get up—don’t lie in bed awake,” sleep expert Grandner said. “Whether it’s the beginning of the night or the middle of the night, if you’ve been awake for 20 or 30 minutes, get up and reset(重新调整). Maybe you just need five minutes to get sleepy, or maybe an hour, but don’t spend that time awake in bed.”
3. Change your thinking about sleep.
“Many people regard sleeping as the final thing they have to do for daily activities. They would like to work or watch TV very late rather than sleep on time. That thinking needs to be changed.” Grandner said.
“Don’t see your sleep as the time you have left in your day,” he advised. “See your sleep as the time you need in order to prepare yourself for an energetic(精力充沛的)tomorrow.”
“It may sound like a small change in thinking, but it’s an important one.” Grandner added.
16. What may happen to the body without enough sleep?
A. The body may be weak. B. The body may be heavy.
C. The body may be awake. D. The body may be strong.
17. The first suggestion in the passage tells us _________.
A. it’s not necessary to sleep regularly
B. it’s not necessary to wake up regularly
C. we should always sleep and wake up regularly
D. we should sleep and wake up regularly on weekdays
18. If you’ve been awake for 20 or 30 minutes at night, the best sleep tip is _________.
A. closing your eyes and lying on the bed B. getting up and resetting
C. drinking some hot tea D. using a smart phone and turning off the light
19. Which suggestion is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Make a timetable, and stick to it. B. Don’t lie in bed awake.
C. Listen to bedtime stories. D. Change your thinking about sleep.
20. The best title of the passage may be _________.
A. Sleep Hours Are Different from Person to Person
B. Sleep-related Disorders
C. One-third of Adults Have Sleeplessness
D. The Importance of Enough Sleep and Suggestions
C
Can you imagine being at school and home at the same time? What about you thinking of a sentence, and your friend knows it just by a feeling?
These may sound crazy in real life. But in the microworld (微观世界) of quantum physics (量子物理), they could all be possible! This year’s Nobel Prize in physics was given to three quantum physicists. They are Alain Aspect from France, John Clauser from the US and Anton Zeilinger from Austria. They did a great job studying quantum entanglement (量子纠缠), which paves the way for new technologies such as quantum computers and quantum communication.
What is quantum entanglement? When two particles (粒子) are entangled, everything about them – from their speed to the way they move – is perfectly connected. If you know the state of one particle, then you know the state of the other, even when the two particles are very far apart.
Thanks to the winning scientists’ finding of this secret, quantum entanglement has now been used in some cutting-edge (尖端的) technologies. For example, it can provide completely safe encryption (加密) in communication. Here’s how it works: changing one entangled particle affects another. So anyone trying to peek at secret quantum information would break the particles’ entanglement. That means nobody can spy (窥探) on a quantum message without getting caught.
Another use is called “quantum teleportation (量子传输)”. This isn’t the same as people showing up from one place to another like in science fiction. But it can send information from one place to another in the quantum state. It’s faster and safer than the traditional way of technology.
Quantum computers are another example. Normal computers process data using ones and zeroes. Quantum computers would use bits of information that are both one and zero. Such computers could run calculations (计算) that no normal computer can.
21.Why does the writer ask two questions at the very beginning of the passage?
A.To draw the readers’ attention to the topic.
B. To show the situation in the future.
C. To ask the readers to think the questions carefully.
D. To prove the physics doesn’t exist.
22. What do we know about this year’s Nobel Prize in physics?
A. It was given to three US physicists.
B. It honored the invention of a super quantum computer.
C. It honored the finding of microworld.
D. It honored the studying of quantum entanglement.
23. What is clear in the event of quantum entanglement?
A. Particles look exactly the same.
B. Everything about two particles is connected.
C. Particles can’t stay far apart.
D. Particles move quickly.
24. Using quantum entanglement in cutting-edge technologies can _____.
a. better protect secrets
b. help recognize spies
c. help send messages faster and safer
d. slow down technological achievements
e. help with calculations on quantum computers
A. abc B. bcd C. ace D. cde
25. What is NOT included in the story about quantum entanglement?
A. What it is. B. Its usage in scientific fields.
C. When it was first found. D. The scientists who made efforts to study it.
