Araba Maze noticed neighborhood kids gather around her as she read children’s books to her niece (侄女). When she finished reading, one of the kids asked, “When are you going to do this again?”
Maze later made it an everyday event, and finally became a librarian. She took books to the streets, becoming a “street librarian”. Later, she created an organization called the Storybook Maze Project. It’s working to provide books for children in Baltimore.
Baltimore has a lot of book deserts. What is a book desert? According to the group Unite for Literacy, it’s a geographic area where printed books and other reading materials are hard to get. The book desert mainly lies in the poor area.
The Storybook Maze Project offers books to kids in Baltimore. One of the ways is to build community bookshelves. It is difficult to open bookstores or set up a library in Baltimore, especially in East and West Baltimore. But it’s easier to build bookshelves in the community as they don’t cost much. The organization also uses vending machines (自动售货机) to give away free books instead of snacks. Maze plans to place these machines in high-traffic areas such as markets and hospitals. What’s more, Maze hopes to set up free book stands (书摊) to offer books to as many kids as possible.
Maze thinks a lack (缺乏) of books has a bad influence on kids’ development. So she tries to get books into kids’ hands. Many books are a mirror of their experiences. Kids can see themselves in Line books, which encourages them a lot. Maze believes kids will spend more time reading with the help of the Storybook Maze Project and that they will develop reading skills and get into reading habits, Maze’s dream is to help them to be lifelong readers.

Police officers often receive calls that aren’t, well, emergencies (紧急的事情).
But something felt off to officer Tim Teneyck of Oregon, Ohio, when a woman called to order a pizza on November 13. He told her she had the wrong number, only to quickly realize this had been no mistake on her part.
In a recording of the call, we can hear them both on the line. “You called 911 to order a pizza?” Tim asked. “This is the wrong number to call for a pizza.” “No, no, no…you’re not understanding,” the woman said.
When the woman replied with her apartment information, everything became clear. She didn’t want a pizza at all. She needed help. But she couldn’t tell him that directly because she wasn’t in a safe place.
While Tim has never received a call like hers in his 14 years of service, he understood her message. After a few more questions, he said, “I’m getting you now.”
As it turned out, the woman was in an apartment with a man who was physically hurting her mother. She knew he would run away if he discovered she was calling 911, so she pretended to order a pizza instead. When Tim sent officers her way, he had them turn off their sirens (警报器) before they arrived.

Plants are very important living things. Life could not go on if there were no plants. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. As a result, animals and men need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us.
If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants.
Flowering plants can make seeds (种子). The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit.
Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores (胚芽). Spores are very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite same as seeds. When these spores are all on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new plants.

Acupuncture is known as “zhenjiu” in Chinese. Growing up, I’d always considered it out of date. As we know, acupuncture treatment lasts a long period and causes a lot of pain. Sometimes simply taking a pill can treat the same illness. But my experience made me change my mind.
Last month, I slept through a flight from London to Beijing. When I woke up, I found that I could no longer move my right arm and fingers. There was no pain. My arm simply didn’t follow my brain’s instructions to move, as if it was no longer mine.
One doctor said he could do nothing but give me some pills. “Rest for two months first and come back for an examination.” I felt great fear.
When I felt helpless, my friend, an acupuncturist in Sichuan, offered to help. I started my acupuncture treatment the next day. At first, I was worried. After a few days, I could move my fingers. Two weeks later, I could use chopsticks. Within a month, I got almost well. It was amazing. How could these tiny needles treat illnesses? Is it magic? Or simply luck? I tried to find out.
Acupuncture first appeared in China more than 2,000 years ago. It works by improving the smooth flow of “qi”. “Qi” flows through “jingluo” throughout the body.
Although acupuncture can’t treat all illnesses, at least it creates a good starting point to build a healthy body. Recently, it has spread internationally, which shows the power of acupuncture. I hope this kind of traditional Chinese medicine will bring health and happiness to friends all over the world.
