Mark and Bert are good friends for most of their lives. A few years ago, when Mark was nine, he developed a serious disease(疾病). The disease took away the boy's eyesight, part of his hearing and his ability to play his favorite sport. However, throughout the years, Bert remained his closest friend. They shared their love of Australian football and enjoyed talking about the Sydney Swans, their favorite team.
Two weeks ago, I took my seat at Sydney Cricket Ground to watch the Swans. The old stadium(体育场)was full of fans. Shortly into the second quarter, I heard someone describing the match. It was Bert who was bringing the match to life. I turned and saw him. Mark was sitting next to him.
Although he could not see anymore, Mark still loved the Swans very much. Usually, he went to the stadium and listened to the match on the radio. However, in the second quarter of that match, the radio broke down. That was when his friend Bert came in.
I hardly paid attention to the Swans and Buddy, the team's star player. Instead, I was listening to Bert and Mark. "What's happening now?" Mark asked. "Don't worry, Mark," Bert said. "Okay. Buddy's got it. Will he go for it? He's going for it! It's his tenth goal! Buddy is on fire!" Mark listened carefully. He was lost in
the magic of Australian football brought to life by his friend. And I was really moved by this heart-warming moment.

If you feel stressed at school, what can you do to make yourself happier? Some may eat their favorite food or listen to some music. Others may go for a walk or get some exercise. A new study found another great way to lower students' stress—playing with dogs.
Scientists studied 105 students between the ages of eight and nine. 35 trained dogs and their trainers also took part in the test. The children were divided into 3groups. The students in the first group spent 20 minutes with a dog and its trainer. They watched the trained dogs perform and even played with them. They did this twice a week for 4 weeks. The second group spent the same amount of time(时长)doing exercise to relax. The last group did neither of these things.
During this time, the scientists recorded the students` cortisol levels(皮质醇水平). Cortisol is a stress hormone(激素). The more stressed you feel, the more cortisol you will have in your body. What did the scientists find? Both the secondand third groups showed rises in cortisol levels. The first group, however, showed no big increase. And the children in this group had the lowest cortisol levels right after playing with the dogs.
According to the study, students enjoy playing with dogs, and it helps them become happier. The stress hormone falls over time this way, which is good for students' health. But here comes the next question; Is 20 minutes of playtime with a dog the best amount of time? Scientists are going to keep working to find out the answer.

When Ariel Cordova-Rojas rode her bike to the Wildlife Park, she planned to go hiking and bird-watching. A mile into her walk, she saw a swan in the grass. Ariel, who had worked at the Wild Bird Aid(援助)Center, knew that swans can be fierce(凶猛的). But as she got close to this one, it didn't move.
She was certain that the bird needed help. Ariel covered her jacket over the bird's head to keep it calm (镇静),carefully picked it up, and held it in her arms. She made the decision to send it to the aid center. But the center was across the East River on the other side of town. She didn't know how to carry the swan there. Luckily, some strangers driving by offered her, her bike, and the swan a lift to a nearby subway station.
On the subway, no one seemed surprised by the unusual passenger. Ariel called the center on the way, and Higginbotham, an animal-care manager, picked her up at the subway station and drove them to the center. There, doctors found that the swan was poisoned(中毒),caused by eating weights used on fishing lines.
The swan was carefully treated at the center. She even made a friend-another wounded swan. People all expected good news from her. But sadly, she died two months later, because of too much poison in her body.
“It's a sad story, but the real story is just how far some people would go to save swan in the big city. In all, Ariel travelled two hours, ” says Higginbotham. That's the spirit we want in everyone. ”

Tim Cook gets up at 3: 45 a. m. Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi gets up at 4 a. m. DisneyCEO Bob Iger is a 4: 30 guy. Jack Dorsey sleeps in until 5:30. So does Sir Richard. . . It seems successful people wake up early. Well, at least some of them do.
As Adam Grand says, “The world’s most successful people aren’t worried about what time others wake up. They wake and work on the schedule that works for them.
Science agrees. Students show most early birds are born to be early birds, and most night owls are naturally night owls.
Look at people’s sleep-wake cycles, On average, our body clocks run on a 24. 2-hour cycle. But some people havebody clocks that run longer than 24. 2hours-which means, over time, they naturally fall asleep later and get up later. These people are called night owls. Oppositely, those whose body clocks run shorter than 24. 2 hours are early birds.
While studies show that early birds are probably more persistent (坚持的), self-directed and are better planners, night owls perfom better in tests on memory and are more creative.
So stop trying to be an early bird or a night owl. Just be who you are. Sucsessful people who areearly birds aren’t successful as a result of waking up early. They’re successful because their body clocks back their schedules. So they can easily work better than others.
When you start working doesn’t matter. What matters is what you get done in the hours at work. Success is all about what you achieve. Not the time of day you do it.

    31. How many "early birds" are mentioned in Paragraph 1?
    A. Four. B. Five. C. Six. D. Seven
    32. How does the writer give reasons for being “early birds" and “night owls"?
    A. By comparing facts. B. By telling stories.
    C. By giving examples. D. By making guesses.
    33. What are probably the advantages of "night owls”?
    ①Making good plans.
    ② Having good memories.
    ③ Offering creative ideas.
    ④Sticking to a difficult task.
    A. ①④ B. ②③ C. ①② D. ③④
    34. Which word can take the place of the underlined word “back”?
    A. Predict. B. Break. C. Support. D. Beat.

She frowned and turned to her dad. "Dad, see what I have done," Grace said aloud in an excited voice. Her dad turned around while putting on his coat, and showed his thumbs up! Immediately, Grace complained, "Dad, you haven't seen it carefully yet." He smiled at her, saying, "No time, baby. I'll see it once again later. "Her elder brother was always busy in his own dream land! She didn't feel like wasting her time trying to show him the painting.
Grace stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom. She threw the paper on the table, banged the door and dropped herself on her bed. Looking up to the ceiling, she wove her anger net.
When her mom called her for dinner, she came late on purpose. She kept silent, and didn't look at anyone. Her mom was surprised to see the unusual behavior. Softly she asked, "Honey, are you OK? Did I do something wrong?" Grace was so angry that she ran away to her room.

Grace was so happy that she hugged her mom tightly. Her mom said, "Honey! I am so sorry, dear! We would never say 'no time' for anything in the future, whether big or small. Got it?" She kissed her mom and said, "Yes, mama, got it. You're my sweet mom!"

Parents are often surprised at their children's ability to use technology. A five-year-old child may easily find and use apps on a smart phone. A ten-year-old child can move up through the levels of a video game easily. Their parents may think their children were born geniuses!
Natural geniuses, however, are not common. But your parents are right if they think you are smarter than them. Most children are born smarter than their parents. This has been proved on IQ tests around the world recently. These tests have shown that over the last 100 years, each new generation has become smarter than the older one. In other words, you are smarter than your parents and your parents are smarter than your grandparents.
This increase in intelligence is called the "Flynn Effect". It was named after James Flynn. Flynn is a university professor in New Zealand. He first noticed this in 1980. According to his research, with each new generation, average IQ scores would increase by twenty percent.
But why are people getting smarter? Flynn and many other researchers believe this has something to do with technology. New technologies have further developed our brains. They have made us think better. So we may be better at completing the missing parts of a puzzle than our parents.
However, being smart doesn't make you wise. Wisdom comes with age and experience. A killer score on a computer game will not help you solve the everyday problems of life. For that, a smart kid will turn to the wisdom of his parents and grandparents.
