Last week, Steven was hit by a bike and his leg was hurt. He was sent to the hospital in. time, and the pain of his leg lasted for a long time.
What is the reason for pain? Pain hurts us, but could it be good for us? Pain tells us that something is wrong so that we can stop what we are doing to protect the body. For example, if you break your leg, pain stops you from walking. If you don't feel any pain, you would continue walking. Then you could hurt your leg more. But why does it continue to hurt even after you have stopped walking? That is because your body reminds you to rest in order to have the energy to make the broken bone(骨头)better.
But how does pain work? We have special cells(细胞) in our skin, eyes and inside our bodies, too. When something goes wrong, these cells will send messages to the brain. The brain then makes us feel pain. Then we will stop doing whatever is causing the pain. Put your hand on a hot pot, and your hand's skin cells tell your muscles(肌肉)and your brain. Your muscles are able to quickly move your hand away from the heat. At the same time, your brain gets the message that something is wrong. And it reminds you that you need to care for your hand. These all happen in less than a second.
And there is an amazing thing during the whole run. Do you know that the brain itself cannot feel pain? In fact, when doctors cut into the brain during the operations , they do not put the person to sleep. Because the person does not feel any pain in the brain, it is thought to be much safer if the person is awake while the doctor works.
Anyway, pain is the sign of body problems. Please pay attention when you feel pain, especially for those modern young people who are always busy with their work.

Did you throw anything away today? The answer for most people would be yes. But where does our rubbish go?
It doesn't just sit in the rubbish bins. Every day, workers come to take the rubbish from our rubbish bins. They put it into a big truck and carry it to landfills(垃圾填埋场). At the landfill, people sort the rubbish. They recycle some, burn some and bury some of it underground. 36______ It means that less rubbish ends up in landfill, landfills can also be bad for the environment.
So many Chinese cities encourage everyone to sort out their rubbish before throwing it away. Put the food in one bag. Put the plastic bottles in another. 37_________ In this way, we can help save a lot of time, money and energy for the society.
38___________ So they have higher recycling rates (比率) . In Sweden, only 4 percent of household waste ends up in landfills every year, In Japan, people recycle nearly 50 percent of rubbish.
There is still a lot to do when it comes to rubbish sorting in China. People in the country make about 300 million tons of rubbish every year. 39_________ The rest of it ends up in landfills. Most of it is unsorted.

What’s the body’s biggest organ(器官)? You might be surprised to find out it’s the skin, which you might not think of as an organ. It covers and protects everything inside your body. Without skin, people’s muscles, bones, and other organs would be hanging out all over the place. Skin holds everything together. It also protects our bodies, helps keep our bodies at just the right temperature and allows us to have the sense of touch.
Your skin can help if you’re feeling too hot or too cold. Your blood vessels (血管), hair, and sweat glands (汗腺) work together to keep your body at just the right temperature. If you were to run around in the heat, you could get overheated. If you play outside when it’s cold, your inner temperature could drop. Either way, your skin can help.
If you’ve been running around on a hot day, your blood vessels get the signal to release (释放) some of your body heat. They do this by bringing warm blood closer to the surface of your skin. That’s why you sometimes get a red face when you run around.
To cool you down, sweat glands also try to work by making lots of sweat to release body heat into the air. The hotter you are, the more sweat your glands make! Once the sweat hits the air, it evaporates off your skin, and you cool down.
What about when you’re ice-skating or sledding? When you’re cold, your blood vessels keep your body from losing heat by narrowing as much as possible and keeping warm blood away from the skin surface. You might notice tiny bumps (凸块) on your skin, and we usually call these goose bumps.

My husband has been working in Beijing for five months. Our 7-year-old daughter Polly missed him very much. When I told her we would visit her father, she was so excited.
We left for Beijing after Polly finished her exam. She couldn't wait to tell her father about her good grades. The train was pretty full Because I did not get the tickets early enough, Polly and I were separated. We could not sit together. Polly was nervous about trips and depended on my reading to her, but this time it seemed impossible at all.
When the two passengers who shared my row found their seats, I asked if they could change places with Polly or me. They both refused.
At the same time, a mother and her two children several rows ahead of us also met the same problem. The mother could hold her baby, but her 6-year-old son had to sit with strangers. She was worried about her son. But nobody offered to help her.
At that very moment, I saw a group of teens. One of the teens stood up and said to the mother, "Aunt, we can help you. " He then rearranged their seats. Then there was space for the family to sit together. The mother was thankful to the teens.
Polly was still upset. However, I could do nothing. Suddenly, the passenger next to me, turned around and asked, "Would you and your daughter like our seats?" We changed seats. Being together made our trip much better.
From this experience, I do know that kindness is contagious, and good deeds cause more good deeds!

When traveling to new cities, visiting a museum is always one of my favorite things to do. Last month, Bill and I, along with our friend Hye Mi, went to visit the Tsingtao Beer Museum in Qingdao, China. It was one of our most exciting activities in the beautiful city.
Qingdao is a city by the sea in Shandong Province. A lot of visitors visit it every year. They come by train, by plane or by bus. Also, there are many visitors arriving from Seoul, South Korea by ship. This has always been my favorite way of going to a new country. Nothing gives me a stronger feeling of arriving in a new country than getting off a ship with my passport in the hand.
After spending about 18 hours on the ship from Seoul to Qingdao, we finally arrived just in time for the Qingdao Beer Festival. The museum was the first stop of our one-week stay in Qingdao.
There were different kinds of tickets on sale. We each spent 90 yuan. We admired(称赞)the special buildings of the museum, learned about the history of Tsingtao Beer and visited the automatic production line(自动生产线). More importantly, the ticket included two beers and a small bag of snacks to go with the beer. They tasted good! Before we left, we each were given a bottle of Tsingtao Beer with our photo printed on it. That was surely something nice to remind(使……想起)us of this great trip in Qingdao.

Pet owners know very well that animals can communicate with humans and with each other, but scientists still find it difficult to explain how this happens.
Animals communicate through sounds, smells, movements and touch. 36 For example, these senses can tell a member of their group about food, or warn them of danger, or even just to play.
No one has ever proved that animals can really talk. 37 He learned to say many English words, such as "I love you", which he said to his trainer every night. Other birds can use different noises or songs when they are in danger or want to make friends, but they cannot make human sounds.
We also know that animals produce different smells in order to communicate information to each other. Dogs are well-known for having a good sense of smell. 38 They also get to know other dogs by smelling them first before they become friends
Scientists have known for some time that when a bee has found a place with a lot of food, it goes back to its home and performs a kind of dance. 39 They don't need the bee to actually take them there.
Finally, a lot of animals use different parts of their body to communicate like humans. 40 Elephants will do something similar as they join their trunks(象鼻)to show friendship.
