Tu Youyou has become the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize for her work in helping to create an anti-malarial (疟疾) medicine. The 84-year-old’s route to the honour has been anything but traditional. In China, she is being called the “three nos” winner: no medical degree, no doctorate, and she’s never worked overseas.
In 1967, malaria, a deadly disease at that time, spread by mosquitoes was decimating Chinese soldiers fighting Americans in the jungles of northern Vietnam. A secret research unit “Mission 523” was formed to find a cure for the illness. Two years later Tu Youyou was instructed to become the new head of “Mission 523”.
“Mission 523” read ancient books carefully for a long time to find historical methods of fighting malaria. When she started her search for an anti-malarial drug, more than 240,000 compounds around the world had been tested, without any success. Finally, the team found a brief reference to one substance, sweet wormwood (青蒿), which had been used to treat malaria in China around 400 AD.The team took out one active compound (化合物) in wormwood, and then tested it. But nothing was effective until Tu Youyou returned to the original ancient text. After another careful reading, she changed the drug recipe one final time, heating the compound without allowing it to reach boiling point.
After the drug showed promising results in mice and monkeys, Tu Youyou volunteered to be the first human recipient (接受者) of the new drug. In any case, Tu Youyou is consistently praised for her drive and passion. One former colleague, Lianda Li, says Ms. Tu is “unsociable and quite straightforward”, adding that “if she disagrees with something, she will say it”.
Another colleague, Fuming Liao, who has worked with Tu Youyou for more than 40 years, describes her as a “tough and stubborn woman”. Stubborn enough to spend decades piecing together ancient texts, she applies them to modern scientific practices. The result has saved millions of lives.

Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy, while her wealthy English parents were travelling in Europe. As a child, she travelled to many places with her family and learned how to speak several languages.
When Nightingale was 17, she told her family that she was going to help sick people. Her parents did not approve, but Nightingale was determined.
She travelled to hospitals all over Europe. She saw that doctors were working too hard. She saw that patients died because they did not get enough care. Nightingale felt that women could be doing more to help doctors take care of sick people.
Nightingale knew that in order for nurses to do more, they needed special training in how to take care of sick people. Nightingale went to a hospital in Germany to study nursing. Then she returned to London and became the head of a group of women called Gentlewomen During Illness. These women cared for sick people in their homes.
In 1854, England was fighting a war with Russia. No reporters wrote about the terrible conditions in the hospitals that cared for the wounded. People demanded that something be done about it. A leader of the government asked Florence Nightingale to take some nurses into the war hospitals. So, in November 1854,Nightingale finally got to work in a hospital.
She took along 38 nurses whom she had trained herself.
At first, the doctors on the battlefields did not want Nightingale and her nurses in their hospitals. They did not believe that women could help. But in fact, the nurses did make a difference. They worked around the clock, tending the sick. Thanks to their hard work, many wounded soldiers survived.
After the war, Nightingale and her nurses were treated like heroes. Finally, in 1860, she started the Nightingale School for Nurses. In time, thanks to Florence Nightingale, nursing became an important part of medicine.

Grizzly bears, which may grow to about 2.5 m long and weigh over 400 kg, occupy a conflicted corner of the American psyche — we revere (敬畏) them even as they give us frightening dreams. Ask the tourists from around the world that flood into Yellowstone National Park what they most hope to see, and their answer is often the same: a grizzly bear.
“Grizzly bears are re-occupying large areas of their former range,” says bear biologist Chris Servheen. As grizzly bears expand their range into places where they haven’t been seen in a century or more, they’re increasingly being sighted by humans.
The western half of the US was full of grizzlies when Europeans came, with a rough number of 50,000 or more living alongside Native Americans. By the early 1970s, after centuries of cruel and continuous hunting by settlers, 600 to 800 grizzlies remained on a mere 2 percent of their former range in the Northern Rockies. In 1975, grizzlies were listed under the Endangered Species Act.
Today, there are about 2,000 or more grizzly bears in the US. Their recovery has been so successful that the US Fish and Wildlife Service has twice attempted to delist grizzlies, which would loosen legal protections and allow them to be hunted. Both efforts were overturned due to lawsuits from conservation groups. For now, grizzlies remain listed.
Obviously, if precautions (预防) aren’t taken, grizzlies can become troublesome, sometimes killing farm animals or walking through yards in search of food. If people remove food and attractants from their yards and campsites, grizzlies will typically pass by without trouble. Putting electric fencing around chicken houses and other farm animal quarters is also highly effective at getting grizzlies away. “Our hope is to have a clean, attractant-free place where bears can pass through without learning bad habits,” says James Jonkel, longtime biologist who manages bears in and around Missoula.

The Camp Fire ravaged(毁坏) an area the size of Chicago, destroying 14,000 residences and taking more than 17 days to contain. As it spread, killing at least 85 people and displacing thousands more in Northern California, Madison waited patiently.
Madison’s owner, Andrea Gaylord, was not able to get to her home in Paradise, California, when the fire began to spread on Nov. 8, meaning Madison was left behind. For weeks, all Gaylord could do was pray for Madison’s safety.
Shayla Sullivan, a rescue volunteer, spotted Madison a few times in a valley, apparently guarding territory, and put out fresh food and water regularly in hopes that the dog would turn up. She even placed an article of clothing that smelled like Andrea near the home to keep Madison’s hope alive until his people could return.
When the evacuation(撤离) order was lifted last week and Andrea went back to the property—which had been destroyed by the fire—her prayers were answered: Madison was there, seemingly protecting what little remained of his family’s home.
“WELL, I’m so HAPPY to report that Andrea was allowed to return to her property today and THERE MADISON WAS!!!! He had stayed to protect what was left of his home, and NEVER gave up on his people!” Sullivan wrote in the comment on her Facebook post, which was shared 12,000 times as of Saturday evening. “I’m so happy. I’m crying as I write this! He didn’t give up through the storms or the fire! A LOOOOONG month it must have been for him!” she added.
Later, Andrea said in an interview that she was overcome with joy to see Madison waiting for her. Andrea lost everything in the fire and is now homeless, but she has been able to find some solace knowing her dogs are safe, “Imagine the loyalty of hanging in through the worst of circumstances and being here waiting,” Andrea told ABC10, fighting through tears. “You could never ask for better animals.”

I heard many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling(叛逆). I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching at one another’s hands for reassurance.
They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. Then set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up with listening to the same record together. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that many people are doing it. They have come out of their cocoon into a larger cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be.
And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share with your classmates at once, well, go to it. Find yourself. Popularity will come with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.

Until a few weeks ago, Asians were the only mask wearers in Western countries, causing even unfriendly responses from the Westerners. But this taboo(禁忌) is falling apart fast after more and more evidences from experiments say that the practice in effect in protecting human beings from infectious diseases. Now, an increasing number of Western countries, including Italy, France, the United States and Australia, have finally decided to recommend their citizens to wear masks in public places to protect one another from the deadly COVID-19 viruses.
For Western nations: the simple change is really difficult and the debate over the face mask has even developed into a larger discussion over the role of the individual in society. In the West, mask-wearing was seen through an individual’s perspective. It runs like “I am free to decide whether to wear a mask to protect myself or not”. However, in Asia, mask-wearing was seen through a social perspective. It runs like “If all individuals wear masks, the society will be protected”. The logics are fundamentally different and the change would require a big cultural adjustment because mask wearing in public places was even considered “strange and frightening” to the Westerners.
But mask-wearing in public places was also new to the Asians until it was struck by SARS in 2003. After that, mask-wearing has become such a part of daily life that it now plays a role in giving the public a sense of being “protected” in Asia.
“I’m convinced that pretty soon everyone in a Western family will have two or three reusable face masks,” said Jean Francois Mattéi president of France’s National Academy of Medicine.
21.Who are most likely to wear masks to protect one another?
A.Italians. B.Chinese. C.Americans. D.Australians.
22.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The necessity of mask wearing. B.The differences between Asia and Europe.
C.The individuals’ role in society. D.The difficulty of accepting mask wearing.
23.What does Jean Francois Mattéi mean?
A.Westerners will accept mask-wearing soon.
B.Westerners usually love prettier face masks.
C.Westerners really care about the environment.
D.Westerners tend to base their decision on evidence.
24.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

Michael Fish may soon be replaced as a weather forecaster by something truly fishier, the shark. Research by a British biology student suggests that sharks could be used to predict storms.
Lauren Smith, 24, is close to completing her study on sharks’ ability to sense pressure. If her studies prove the theory, scientists may be able to monitor the behaviour of sharks to predict bad weather.
Lauren Smith had previously studied the behaviour of lemon sharks in the Bahamas. She then used their close relatives, lesser spotted dogfish, for further research at the University of Aberdeen. Her work, thought to be the first of its kind to test the pressure theory, resulted from the observation that juvenile blacktip sharks off Florida moved into deeper water ahead of a violent storm in 2001. Lauren Smith said. “I’ve always been keen on travelling and diving and this led me to an interest in sharks. I was delighted to have been able to explore this arca for my PhD…”.
“Who can say if this could lead to sharks predicting weather fronts, there’s so much more we need to understand. But it certainly opens the way to more research,” said Lauren Smith. It has been discovered that a shark senses pressure using hair cells in its balance system.
At the Bimini Shark Lab in the Bahamas, Lauren Smith fixed high-tech sensors to sharks to record pressure and temperature, while also tracking them using GPS technology. In Aberdeen, she was able to study the effects of tidal and temperature changes on dogfish, neither of which were harmed. She also used a special lab which can mimic (模仿) oceanic pressure changes caused by weather fronts. She is due to complete her study and graduate later this year. She says she will be looking for a job which will give her the chance to enrich her experience of shark research.
28.What is Lauren Smith interested in?
A.How to help Michael Fish predict weather.
B.How to complete her study quickly.
C.How to predict storms with the help of sharks.
D.How to work as a weather forecaster.
29.What made Lauren Smith interested in shark research?
A.Her hobbies. B.The pressure theory. C.A violent storm. D.Her job.
30.Why did Lauren Smith put high-tech sensors onto sharks?
A.To test the oceanic pressure. B.To study the temperature changes.
C.To know the whereabouts of them. D.To record pressure and temperature.
31.Which of the following jobs may Lauren Smith take up?
A.A deep-sea diver. B.A customs officer. C.A worker in a park. D.An architect.
Bicycle riding has taken the world by storm. Bicycles are typically made of steel or aluminum but now there is a unique company that is growing bikes on trees, literally. These bicycles are made of British-grown ash trees by Welsh maker Andy Dix. His Hay-on-Wye company, Twmpa Frames, is making bikes that are of high performance and environmentally sustainable.
“It’s great to push for more bikes and fewer cars on the road, but there’s no escaping the fact that the bike industry as a whole is pretty energy intensive, ” Dix told Cycling Industry, “I’ve always tried to minimize environmental impact in my work. Rather than relying on heavily-processed metals, or layers of plastic that will one day end up in landfill, I’m building bikes from captured carbon, in a process powered by sunlight. ”
It took two years to build the prototype (雏形) that was made from ash wood. Dix tested the wooden bike on the roughest roads he could find and discovered that it was comfortable, durable, and excellent at absorbing shakes. He put more than 3, 000 miles on the bike. Dix explained, “I was running along battered roads that would have shaken me to bits on a aluminum bike. The penny dropped: Not only could I make a bike out of wood, but it had inherent advantages over other materials. ”
Though cutting down trees can add to more carbon in the atmosphere, sustainable tree farming is possible. Dix said that manufacturing a British tonne of aluminum results in carbon emissions of 4, 532 kg while producing a tonne of wood only emits 457 kg. Currently, the cost of a new Twmpa Cycle is out of reach for many bicycle riders; but the idea of using sustainable materials like ash trees could start a new cycling revolution that puts the environment first. Helping the environment could be just a pedal away.
32.What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The driving force for wooden bikes.
B.The reasons for choosing the materials for building bikes.
C.The problems with cycling industry.
D.The process of building wooden bikes.
33.What does the underlined part “The penny dropped” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Money was missing.
B.The truth came out.
C.The bike broke down.
D.The efforts were in vain.
34.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Logging trees is a wrong practice.
B.Developing sustainable forestry is a must.
C.The wooden bike does more good than harm.
D.Carbon emission calls for urgent attention.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title of the text?
A.Amazing? Bikes Grow on Trees
B.Less Carbon, More Sustainable
C.No Innovation, No Development
D.Amusing? Bike Riding Is Taking off
Every year, the brightest young scientists from around the globe come together to participate in the world’s largest pre-college science competition, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair(ISEF). They demonstrate their knowledge of science and engineering to improve the way we work and live.
One of the winners, Katie Lu, found a method for removing oil from water. This concept can also be applied to the removal of microplastics from our oceans as well. Here is what Katie told reporters:
My experience at Intel ISEF was amazing! I remember on judging day, walking the exhibit hall and looking at the people gathered outside waiting to get in. My teacher turned to me and said, “That’s the future right there.” It was so amazing to spend time with all of these participants who are going to do amazing things in the future.
My scientific career has taught me not to fear failure and not to be afraid to ask for help. It’s really easy to be overwhelmed(挫败)and wonder if what you’re doing is going to work out, but even if it doesn’t, it’s OK! Always look on the positive side! A failure now doesn’t mean you’re a failure forever. Failure makes success feel earned when it comes. Also, asking for help is good when you’re struggling. You learn how to do things a lot faster and more efficiently.
I’m shocked that some people are still skeptical about climate change. It’s real and dangerous, and it’ s one of the most important issues of our generation. Reducing carbon emissions isn’t a “should”, it is a “must” to continue living on the planet. Additionally, people aren’t really worried about their personal impact on the earth in terms of littering, overusing plastic or wasting resources. If we don’t curb harmful human activity before it’s too late, it will be a problem that affects all humans, not just those that contribute.
36.What can we learn from what Katie’s teacher said in Paragraph3?
A.No Intel ISEF, no future. B.Failure is the mother of success.
C.All the talents are at the Intel ISEF. D.The participants will make the future wonderful.
37.What docs Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A.The relationship between failure and success.
B.What Katie has gained from her scientific career.
C.Seeking help is a shortcut to doing things well.
D.The problems Katie experienced in her science.
38.The underlined word “curb” in the last paragraph probably means_________.
A.control B.consider C.notice D.predict
39.What does Katie care about most?
A.Ocean exploration. B.Environmental problems.
C.The shortage of natural energy. D.The overpopulation on the earth.

通读全文,尤其是第一段“I heard many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling(叛逆). I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own feet.( 我听到许多父母抱怨他们十几岁的孩子很叛逆。我希望是这样。在你这个年龄,你应该远离你的父母。你应该学会自立。)”可知,作者想要告诉我们的是:青少年如何学会自己做决定。故选A项。
根据第一段“It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching at one another’s hands for reassurance.(青少年似乎也在用同样的方式来表示他们不同意父母的意见。他们中的大多数人都紧紧抓住彼此的手,以寻求安慰,而不是大胆地自己闯出一片天地。)”可知,大多数青少年确实表现出叛逆,但是却不敢独立行动,故选C项。
19.推理判断题。根据第三段“It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be.(对于一个青少年来说,站在流行的浪潮中走自己的路已经变得越来越难了。工业已经牢牢地占领了青少年市场。如今,每个青少年都可以从广告中学习什么是青少年应该拥有和成为的。)” 可推断,作者认为青少年受广告的影响很大。故选B项。
20.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Find yourself. Popularity will come with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.(发现自我。受欢迎的人是那些尊重你的人。这是唯一一种真正有价值的受欢迎程度。)” 可知,在青少年时期,一个人应该学会找到真正的自我。故选A项。

根据第一段“Until a few weeks ago, Asians were the only mask wearers in Western countries, causing even unfriendly responses from the Westerners.(直到几周前,在西方国家,只有亚洲人戴口罩,甚至引起了西方人的不友好反应)”和第二段“However, in Asia, mask-wearing was seen through a social perspective. It runs like “If all individuals wear masks, the society will be protected”.(然而,在亚洲,戴口罩是从社会角度来看的。它就像“如果所有人都戴口罩,社会就会受到保护”)”可知,亚洲人会戴口罩来保护彼此。只有B项“Chinese”属于亚洲人。故选B项。
22.主旨大意题。根据第二段“For Western nations: the simple change is really difficult and the debate over the face mask has even developed into a larger discussion over the role of the individual in society. In the West, mask-wearing was seen through an individual’s perspective. It runs like “I am free to decide whether to wear a mask to protect myself or not”. However, in Asia, mask-wearing was seen through a social perspective. It runs like “If all individuals wear masks, the society will be protected”. The logics are fundamentally different and the change would require a big cultural adjustment because mask wearing in public places was even considered “strange and frightening” to the Westerners.(对于西方国家来说,简单的改变是非常困难的,关于口罩的争论甚至已经发展到一个更大的关于个人在社会中的角色的讨论。
根据最后一段中Jean Francois Mattéi的话“I’m convinced that pretty soon everyone in a Western family will have two or three reusable face masks,(我相信很快西方家庭的每个人都会有两到三个可重复使用的口罩)”可推知,Jean Francois Mattéi认为西方人很快就会接受戴口罩这一习惯。故选A项。

根据第二段““It’s great to push for more bikes and fewer cars on the road, but there’s no escaping the fact that the bike industry as a whole is pretty energy intensive, ” Dix told Cycling Industry, “I’ve always tried to minimize environmental impact in my work. Rather than relying on heavily-processed metals, or layers of plastic that will one day end up in landfill, I’m building bikes from captured carbon, in a process powered by sunlight.
根据第三段最后两句“Dix explained, “I was running along battered roads that would have shaken me to bits on a aluminum bike. The penny dropped: Not only could I make a bike out of wood, but it had inherent advantages over other materials.
根据末段“Though cutting down trees can add to more carbon in the atmosphere, sustainable tree farming is possible.
通读全文,尤其是根据首段第二句“Bicycles are typically made of steel or aluminum but now there is a unique company that is growing bikes on trees, literally. (自行车通常是由钢或铝制成的,但现在有一家独特的公司正在树上种植自行车)”可知,本文主要介绍一种长在树上的自行车,即,用白蜡树做成的环保自行车。Amazing? Bikes Grow on Trees“神奇吗?自行车长在树上”符合全文大意。故选A。

Failure makes success feel earned when it comes. Also, asking for help is good when you’re struggling.(现在的失败并不意味着你永远都是一个失败者。
划线词前一句提到“people aren’t really worried about their personal impact on the earth in terms of littering, overusing plastic or wasting resources.(人们并不是真正担心个人不好的行为,如乱扔垃圾、过度使用塑料或浪费资源等对地球造成的影响。)”划线词后面的主句部分说明这类行为的不良影响“it will be a problem that affects all humans .(这将是一个影响全人类的问题。)” 故选A项。
文章第二段提到“One of the winners, Katie Lu, found a method for removing oil from water. (其中一位获奖者,Katie Lu,发现了一种从水中去除油的方法。)” Katie Lu发现了一种从水中去除油的方法,因此获奖。她的发现是关于环境问题的;以及文章最后一段中Katis所说的话“It’s real and dangerous, and it’ s one of the most important issues of our generation. Reducing carbon emissions isn’t a “should”, it is a “must” to continue living on the planet. (这是真实的,是危险的,也是我们这一代最重要的问题之一。要继续生活在这个星球上,减少碳排放不是“应该”,而是“必须”。)”可知,Katis最关注的是环境问题。故选B项。
