Space lab blasts off
In the past 20 years, astronauts have done nearly 3,000 scientific experiments aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Many breakthroughs have been made, including research on drugs for Alzheimer’s disease and cancer, and the effects of living in space on the human body. There was a time when China had little chance to do such research. Now China can.
On July 24, Wentian, the first space lab of China’s space station, blasted off. It later docked (对接) with the Tianhe core module (天和核心舱), reported China Daily.
Wentian will be mainly used for studying space life sciences. Astronauts will use fruit flies, zebra fish, thale cress (拟南芥) and other animals and plants to study how they grow and age in space. Experiments on cells and organs (器官) in weightless conditions will also be done. These studies “could pave the way for humans to live in space and the future treatment of diseases in space”, said Zhao Liping. chief designer of the Wentian Space Application System.
The lab is open to scientists from other countries, too. Canadian cancer scientist Tricia Larose posted on Twitter that she would “happily” travel to the Tiangong space station to do research.
Larose’s project of “tumors (肿瘤) in space” was chosen as one of nine projects to be carried out in Wentian. It was chosen by the United Nations and China from 42 applicants (申请者) from 27 countries.
Her project tries to study if tumor growth could slow or stop in weightless conditions and how space radiation (辐射) affects our DNA.
Besides Wentian, the other space lab, Mengtian, is set to blast off in October. More than 1,000 experiments are expected to be carried out in these two space labs.

When people find themselves in some arguments, they often turn to mediation (调解). Mediators are supposed to listen carefully, avoid agreeing with the ideas of one side, and make both sides feel comfortable. Surprisingly, a new research which my friend and I made suggests that mediators should accept a hostile attitude rather than a calm (镇静的) one to help people solve their arguments. A hostile mediator, we find, brings better results than a nice one does.
It is useful to add more negativity (消极) to a hostile situation. Imagine what parents do when they find it difficult to stop their children from fighting, “I don’t care who started it—both of you, go to your rooms! Now!” At first sight, a calm mediator seems to be more helpful. But as anyone with brothers or sisters knows, parents’ unfriendly treatment of the situation can have an unusual result. Children who were getting into a fight with each other moments before suddenly become reasonable because their parents are unkind to them.
In our research, we created situations in which some mediators were parts of a heated argument. In some cases, the mediator had a “nice” way—calm and polite. In others, he was hostile—unfriendly and even rude. We found that people were able to reach an agreement more easily in front of a hostile mediator than in front of a nice one.
The main result of the test is not that hostility always helps. In fact, recent research shows unkind attitude also has some disadvantages. For example, behaving rudely may increase the risk of bad performance in many tasks and losing business partners. Other research shows that kind behavior has some social advantages. People are possibly close to reaching agreements and become future business partners.
Even with the widespread social advantages of kind behavior and disadvantages of unkind behavior, hostility can help in certain situations.
56.What does the underlined word “hostile” mean in the first paragraph?
A.敌对的 B.友好的 C.和谐的 D.虚伪的
