The Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington began a six-month celebration on March 16 of the 50th anniversary of the arrival of two giant pandas, celebrating the close cooperation between China and the United States in panda exchanges and preservation. On April 16, visitors can enjoy lion dance performances, and calligraphy exhibitions. They also can speak with the zoo’s scientists and watch the pandas receive special nutritious treats.
In 1972, then-US President Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, made a historic visit to China. At an appreciation dinner before they left China, Premier Zhou Enlai told Pat that China would present the US with two pandas, which surprised and delighted her.
The pandas, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing, arrived at the National Zoo on April 16, 1972. They lived there for more than 20 years, before passing away in the 1990s.
A new panda couple, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, arrived at the zoo in 2000. They still live at the zo0 with their cub, Xiao QiJi (Little Miracle). The couple’s other three cubs, Tai Shan, Bao Bao and Bei Bei were returned to China.
“After 50 years, giant pandas remain an iconie species for our zoo,” said Brandie Smith, director of the national zoo. “More importantly, they show how great conservation outcomes can be achieved through great partnerships with our Chinese colleagues.”
Usually, Smith and her coworkers visit their Chinese partners several times a year to share knowledge about pandas. Chinese experts also go to the US. During the pandemic, they have communicated through emails and video calls. Smith said it has been “as good as it always is” as they have had a good relationship for many years. She said she hopes the program will last at least 50 more years. Chinese Ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai said “We are connected again in the growth of our little ambassador.”
The pandas have been seen by tens of millions of US people, Brooklyn, a 3-year-old girl, said she wanted more panda mommies and panda babies to come to the zoo.
24、What can visitors do during the celebration?
A. Communicate with the zoo’s experts.
B. Treat the pandas to special nutritious food.
C. Take part in lion dance performances.
D. Enjoy exhibitions about the pandas.
25、How many giant pandas live at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo at present?
A. 2. B. 3. C. 5. D. 8.
26、What does Brandie Smith think of the giant pandas in the zoo?
A. They have trouble in adapting to a different living environment.
B. They have been living in the zoo for at least 100 years.
C. They show joint efforts made by experts from both two countries.
D. They are the most popular animals at the American National Zoos.
27、What can we conclude from this passage?
A. American experts lost touch with Chinese partners during the pandemic.
B. Pandas in the Smithsonian’s National Zoo are not taken good care of.
C. All of the new panda couple’s cubs were sent back to China after their birth.
D. Sending pandas to the US developed friendship between the two countries.
“What is the story of your piano?” A new friend asked over dinner. My piano stays in a corner of small living room. “All pianos have stories,” she said. Suddenly, my piano’s story came flooding out of me fully-formed as if I’d always had this tale to tell.
I loved music since childhood. I studied with the recorder and moved to the violin, trumpet and guitar. But playing the piano had always been my dream, a dream our family could not afford.
I grew up in an immigrant Chinese family in Toronto. My father waited tables in a Chinese restaurant, and my mother worked in a Chinese laundry. Despite our poor childhood, my siblings (兄弟姐妹) and I were always fed with love. I can’t remember which birthday it was when my mother spared the money to buy me a doll. Of course, by then I’d outgrown wanting dolls. But she worked too hard to know that and I never told her. I happily and gratefully accepted the doll because I loved the gift that was her loving me enough to buy it for me.
So it was eventually with my piano. It was in my last year of high school. I took piano lessons for about a year before university forced me to stop. I had to make a decision to continue the more practical goal of medical school or my love for music. The practical one in me won. But I also stopped piano lessons because as with my doll, it was too late to learn to play the way I wanted.
I moved that piano around with me over the next decade—until my son was born he showed an early interest in music, so I put him in piano lessons.
I’ve come to realize that in pursuit of my career, I’ve let all personal pleasure fall away. Maybe it’s time to get that piano retuned(重新调音) again, this time for myself, before it’s too late to enjoy. Maybe that’s something we all should do right now.
Sometimes a single question can open whole paths of thinking and discovery. So, what is the story of your piano?
28、What do we know about the author from the first three paragraphs?
A. She was born in a musical family.
B. She refused to accept the doll as a gift.
C. She had a poor but happy childhood.
D. Her parents were too busy to care for her.
29、Why did the author stop learning the piano in her last year of high school?
A. Playing the piano was useless to her.
B. She couldn’t afford piano lessons.
C. Her parents forced her to stop.
D. She faced academic and career pressure.
30、What will the author probably do in the near future?
A. Ask her son to learn the piano. B. Buy a new piano for herself.
C. Restart her piano dream. D. Focus on her medical career.
31、What is the author’s purpose in writing the article?
A. To share her story about an unrealized dream.
B. To show the advantage of medicine over music.
C. To recall her unfortunate childhood experience.
D. To encourage readers to play the piano.
Though the Tokyo Olympic Games closed on Aug 8, the public is still watching the athletes. The technologies that helped them in the competition have attracted people’s attention.
Su Bingtian is the first Chinese sprinter(短跑运动员) to reach an Olympic 100 final, setting an Asian record of 9. 83 seconds in his semi-final. “It takes Su 47 steps to run 100 meters. Each step is very important,” a member of Su’s training team said. “Randy Huntington, Su’s American coach and a biomechanics(生物力学) expert in track and field, has collected a lot of data on outstanding sprinters and built a database. He put in all of Su’s data and got a best model. When Su is training, the team uses high-speed cameras to record his training and compares it with the model to find out his weaknesses.”
Technology is also useful in table tennis. On July 27, the semifinal match between China’s Sun Yingsha and Japan’s Mima Ito was going on intensely in Tokyo. You wouldn’t have guessed that a power AI platform was monitoring the match. At an average speed of 100 Mbps, the data was sent to technical team of the Zhejiang University Table Tennis Intelligent Big Data Analysis Platform, 2,442 kilometers away from Tokyo.
The platform has stored the data of more than 8,000 matches so far. The research team has been working on match simulation(模拟) since 2018. “Using big data and AI, we can exactly simulate and predict how the winning rate will change when players change certain tactics(策略).” Professor Wu Yingcai said.
The Tokyo Olympic Games have seen not only scientific support in training, but many newly developed and cutting-edge technologies in athletes’ devices. For example, the Kenya women’s volleyball team’s GPS devices collected data on each player’s strength, heart rate and so on to coaches, who used the information to prevent injury and design training plans for each individual.
32、According to Su Bingtian’s training team, what is important for his better achievement?
A. His outstanding talent. B. His coach’s active encouragement.
C. His scientific training. D. Support from other sprinters.
33、What is the advantage of match simulation according to Wu Yingcai?
A. Players can know their own disadvantages.
B. It helps players improve their winning chance.
C. It helps coaches collect lots of data.
D. Players can study other players’ skills.
34、What does the underlined word “cutting-edge” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Advanced. B. Expensive. C. International. D. Necessary.
35、What does the article mainly talk about?
A. The ways athletes prepared for the Tokyo Olympics.
B. The excellent athletes winning at the Tokyo Olympics.
C. The wonderful moments of the Tokyo Olympics.
D. Technologies helping athletes at the Tokyo Olympics.

解析:Good morning, boys and girls. In my past years as the headmaster, our school held many enjoyable, and successful competitions, including singing, dancing, and drama. Who could forget last year’s fantastic reading competition? And now we’ll have something even better. You know nowadays, some people don’t treat pets well. Maybe because they do not think carefully before getting a pet. So there’s going to be a Pets’ Competition to impress on everyone the importance of treating pets kindly. You will not feel disappointed or bored because our teachers will not talk to you about academic theory. Instead, we can gather experience in a relaxing environment with animals in the classroom. The competition will be based on the dogs’ behaviour. However, this competition is not open to your own pets this first year. Our school has chosen five dogs for this competition. That means you can just sit back and enjoy. Come to observe carefully and keep a diary during the activity. How can you miss such an educational and fun event? It may be the best competition of the year.
