- MATERIAL ANALYSIS:
1) [WHAT] This is a blog post written by Alan about living without a smartphone for a week. The theme of this passage is the balance between the usage of the smartphone and real life.
2) [WHY] The author tells people what’s his life like beyond screen. He thinks it’s important to enjoy real life and real relationship rather than spend a lot of time on smartphone, which may make readers think about whether reduce their use of smartphone to enjoy a real life.
3) The passage is a blog according to time order, this blog records author’s different feelings and thoughts before and after he stopped using his smartphone through such writing means as giving examples, comparison, psychological descriptions, action descriptions, and the title is a question sentence. This blog continues in the first person, with the past simple tense as the main tense. The language is plain and natural, vivid and appropriate.
- LEARNING CONDITION ANALYSIS:
[What students have known] The students in Class Two Senior One have a solid foundation. They have learned the passage on Internet topic and known that Internet both has its advantages and disadvantages. Today’s topic is the usage of smartphone, students can transfer what they have learned before to this class.
[What Students want to know] Students have learned reading part, know that Internet has its huge advantages, but toughing on the adverse side effects, students know little about it. In this part, students want to know more about smartphone addiction.
[What students are expected to know] Students are expected to deal with the relationship between smartphone and real life smartly and achieve the balance between real life and smartphone.

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1) Understand the blog post about Alan’s experience of spending a week without a smartphone;
2) Make a list of the differences between before and after he stopped using his smartphone;
3) Appreciate the blog to analyze the author's writing meanings and its functions;
4) Retell the paragraphs according to the key words displayed on the blackboard;
5) Express their own opinion on the question: Smartphone: a smart choice and leave their comments below Alan’s blog.

b) Then answer these two questions: What are they doing in the video? Can you find a word or phrase to describe them?

To activate students’ original experience on this topic;
To drive students to express and practice their speaking ability;
2) Pre-reading stage(2 minutes)
Activity 2: Prediction
Directions:
Leads students to notice the keyword in the title and identify the text type so as to make predictions with the following questions:
Why there are two “smart” here? Do these two words have the same meaning?
Why the title is a question? What might be the author’s answer to the question asked in title?
Objectives:
To awaken students’ previous knowledge about “smartphone”;
To cultivate students' prediction ability by analysing title;
3) While-reading stage(25 minutes)
Activity 3: Fast reading (structure of the passage)
Directions:
Tell students to go through the passage quickly and complete the structure chart. While reading pay attention to the topic sentence and the time marked words..
Objectives:
To practise their fast reading ability and methods and understand the main content of the passage;
To practice scanning for the whole structure of the passage.
Activity 4: Detailed reading (appreciate the writing techniques )
Directions:
Introduction part
a) Tell students read para. 1 and 2 to answer the following questions: What’s are the signs of symptoms of a smartphone addict? What’s the change did the author have? And what made him make a change?
b) To analyse the writing technique: listing example and appreciate its function.
c) Ask students read paras. 1 and 2 again and find some adjectives to describe the author’s feeling.
Main body part
d) Tell students read paras. 3-5 to find action description and psychological description and appreciate its function.
e) Ask students to appreciate the expression effects.
f) Ask students to discuss and draw a fluctuation line of the author’s felling.
g) Ask students to make a comparison between before and after he stopped using his smartphone for a week.
Conclusion part
h) Tell students read para. 5 and answer the following questions:
What is the result by the end of the week?
Why didn’t the author turn his smartphone back on?
How would Alan deal with his smartphone in the future?
i) Ask students to think about the author’s opinion toward the question:”Smartphone: a smart choice?”
Objectives:
To practice students’ appreciation ability;
To have a better understanding of the passage;
To practice students’ logical ability and summary ability;
4) Post-reading stage(10 minutes)
Activity 5: Discuss and leave comments
Directions:
a) Make students discuss the answer to the title question;
b) Tell students based on what you have learned during this class and the sentence patterns given on the screen to express their own opinion on the question;
c) Ask students to leave comment on the blog and write it on the worksheet 4.

To consolidate what is learned in this class;
To cultivate their critical thinking;
Transfer input to output and practise their speaking ability;
5) Assignment(1 minute)
Nowadays many teenagers are addicted to their smartphones, which even has side effects on their normal life. Please come up with a story that you think could encourage them to put down their smartphones. Write it of about 80 words
