It’s said that you don’t know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes. And you also don’t know what it’s like for older people to travel until you accompany one on a trip.
After flying with my elderly father from Washington, D.C.to L.A.in July, I began to realize that a companion has important tasks that can make a journey easier for older people. I booked non-stop tickets on JetBlue to avoid tiring, confusing connections, and we flew directly into small, manageable Long Beach Airport. Even though my father could walk, I arranged with the airline for wheelchair assistance, which meant we got on board first.
When I took him back to the airport for his return flight to Washington, I got permission from JetBlue to wait with him at the gate instead of saying goodbye at the security checkpoint. I wished he’d had a first-class seat and access to a comfortable airline club. Better yet, I wish I had flown with him both ways. As I watched the attendant wheel him to the lift that took him from the tarmac(飞机跑道)to the plane, I felt like an anxious mom sending her child to school for the first time.
Things can go awry on a plane trip. And then there is the horrifying story about Joe and Margie. When they landed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, a wheelchair attendant met them to help with a connection. But somehow Margie, who had Alzheimer’s disease, disappeared.
I didn’t need to worry about my father wandering away. At 82, his mind was sharper than mine. But his hearing was poor, so I worried about what would happen if he missed an important announcement. Fortunately, everything went just fine. Careful planning made the trip successful.
Next time I travel with a senior, I’ll know better. I hope there will be a next time.
24.Why did the man buy nonstop tickets?
A.His father was tired of flights.
B.He had important tasks to do.
C.He cared about his father.
D.His schedule was tight.
25.How did the author feel when seeing his father off?
A.Disappointed. B.Delighted.
C.Worried. D.Sad.
26.What does the underlined part “go awry” probably mean?
A.be amused. B.carry on as usual.
C.live up to one’s expectation. D.be away from the correct course.
27.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Taking a trip does great good to seniors.
B.It is a pleasant experience to travel with seniors.
C.To have a long journey with seniors is unpractical.
D.A good arrangement ensures seniors to take a nice trip.
C
Language learning apps are very popular now and offer opportunities to learn vocabulary and practice grammar. But there has been a discussion about just how effective such apps can be.
Among the most popular apps are Duolingo and Busuu. A former research found positive results on the use of them. But it mainly concentrated on studies with learners who had signed up for language courses and these apps worked as an after-class support, so the results were not always reliable. A recent study of 4,095 Busuu users has been carried out to find out if users can actually learn a language with an app.
Busuu provides learning materials for 12 different languages. It offers special models where some contents are ready for use for free while some contents are not. We find that its users are an even mix of men and women. More than half consider themselves to be at the beginner level because there is a reduction in users as their language levels go up. Most people use the app because of personal interest, or because they want to study or live abroad. Female users are likely to use it less often but for longer periods of time than male users.
Feedback in the app is highly thought of. More than 92% of the users say that the app has met their expectations and 86% consider the app as very good or good. In fact, more than 80% of the users surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language they are learning.
Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users, and this can address the performance nervousness that many learners suffer from when asked to speak a foreign language. So language teachers should encourage their students to use them to do the grammar work, leaving precious class time for more language communication.
28.What's the reason why the results of the former research weren't always reliable?
A.It only considered users of a limited kind.
B.It just focused on positive results.
C.It was only carried out before class.
D.It used out-of-date methods.
29.What can we learn about the app Busuu from the text?
A.It's used by more advanced learners.
B.. All the contents are free to use.
C.Most users consider it satisfying.
D.It's more popular with female learners.
30.The underlined word"address"in the last paragraph can be replaced by_____.
A.cause B.solve
C.increase D.practice
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Language learning apps are very popular with most language teachers.
B.Students won't suffer nervousness in learning languages by using Busuu.
C.Language learning apps are effective and satisfactory to language learners.
D.Students should be required to use apps for homework after class.

“I miss you. Let’s meet up soon?” These are the words which appear in my inbox and outbox almost every week. I miss my friends and they miss me. But many of them are dotted (散布于) around the country. I can’t see them as much as I’d like.
I have friends living in Telford, Wolverhampton and Birmingham. Some friends have moved abroad. I’ve also got some wonderful pals in London, where I live now.
But, unlike many of my peers. I don’t have one big group I can meet in one place at a time. It means a large part of my life is spent visiting my friends separately. And if I don’t do it right, it can be bloody exhausting.
Don’t get me wrong. I will always make time for these visits and I never regret them. They are my friends and worth every penny and effort. But life is busy — you have friends, family, a job, a partner, and pets. Each requires their own time slots (时间档) and individual levels of attention. So I’d be a big liar if I didn’t admit I’ve striven to get the balance right over the years. To avoid what I call “long-distance friendship burnout”, I try to arrange one weekend a month to meet a friend. When it comes to playing guest or host, it’s nice to take turns.
I’ve had weekends in the past where I’ve tried to arrange many friend visits in one trip. But that’s exhausting. And I didn’t feel present enough for my friends as I was thinking about what time I had to leave to see the next person, so now it’s all about one friend at a time.
Obviously it means seeing them less often, but at the same time I get to spend more time with them when I do.
Long-distance friendships can be tough. But they are also beautiful and 100% worth all the trouble.
32.What is the author’s trouble?
A.She has no friends in her city.
B.She can’t get in touch with some of her friends.
C.She has many friends living far away in different places.
D.She is tired of keeping cross-national friendships.
33.What does the underlined word “striven” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Begged. B.Stopped. C.Decided. D.Struggled.
34.What’s the advantage of the author’s new way to meet friends?
A.It makes her friends miss her even more.
B.It allows her to focus on one friend at a time.
C.It helps save her friends a lot of travel expenses.
D.It lets her discover the beauty of long-distance friendship.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.Experience in keeping up long-distance friendship.
B.A couple of wonderful places to live.
C.The importance of time management in daily life.
D.Useful tips on emailing friends.
Eating for the sake of pleasure, rather than survival, is nothing new. Traditionally researchers focused on so-called metabolic(代谢的)hunger, which is driven by physiological necessity and is most commonly identified with an empty stomach. When we start dipping into our stores of energy or when we drop below our typical body weight, the system rings the bell.____36____After we eat enough food or put on weight, the same hormonal(激素的) system and brain circuit then tend to depress our appetite.
Now, “Shifting the focus to pleasure” is a new approach to understanding hunger and weight gain. The brain begins responding to fatty and sugary foods even before they enter our mouth. Merely seeing or hearing a desirable item excites the reward circuit. Many overeating people go beyond their energy needs, due to consuming these food items they hear or see.____37____Determining whether an individual’s weight problem arises from emotional longings or a physical failure in the body’s ability to burn up calories is important for doctors to choose the most appropriate medications or behavioral interventions for treatment.
A kind of surgery that some overweight people have already undergone to manage their weight might have provided some of the biological insights into why many of us eat far beyond our physiological needs.____38____Through removing tissue, doctors make it impossible for the stomach to accommodate more than a couple of ounces of food at a time. The brain’s reward circuit then responds much more weakly to the images and spoken names of tempting foods.
____39____The traditional idea is that we can teach overweight people to improve their self-control. However, scientists now realize that the foods themselves are more of the problem. For many people, certain foods cause such a strong response in the brain’s reward circuit that our willpower will rarely, if ever, be sufficient to resist those foods once they are around.____40____That means never bringing fatty, super sweet foods into our house and avoiding going to places that offer them whenever possible.
A.Therefore we have to reengineer the food environment.
B.This medical operation dramatically shrinks the stomach.
C.Psychologically, removing influence factor can be an option.
D.This approach has already had an influence on the choice of treatment.
E.The type of food processing method also takes a hand one way or another.
F.People’s follow-up gesture then greatly affects the time they spend in consuming the food.
G.A network of hormones and neural pathways in the brain activate our feeling of hunger.

W: Hello, everyone. My name is Alicia, and I live in the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico. Today, I'd like to tell something about my hometown and people here. Here in Guanajuato, music and dancing are a big part of life. There are a lot of festivals here, and many kinds of music. Many young people like rock or pop music but my favorite kind of music is traditional Mexican music, which is the kind of music my grandparents and great grandparents listened to. I don't know why but I'm just crazy about it.
I'm a folk dancer, and I love to perform at special events, which give my chances to enjoy myself. To be a folk dancer, you have to love the culture and the music here. That's the most important thing, but we also need to work hard and practice a lot. We dance in groups, and every person has to know the steps. And we can't buy traditional folk dancing dresses at the store, so we have to make our own. We wear traditional dresses that only come from this part of Mexico.

根据第二段“ I booked non-stop tickets on JetBlue to avoid tiring, confusing connections, and we flew directly into small, manageable Long Beach Airport. ”(我在JetBlue上订了直达机票,以避免疲劳和混乱的转机,我们直接飞到了小型、易于管理的Long Beach Airport)可知作者买直达票是为了避免麻烦,说明作者非常关心他的父亲,不愿意给他带来不必要的麻烦。故C项正确。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段“As I watched the attendant wheel him to the lift that took him from the tarmac(飞机跑道)to the plane, I felt like an anxious mom sending her child to school for the first time.”(当我看着服务员把他从停机坪带到飞机上的电梯时,我感觉自己就像一位焦急的母亲送她的孩子第一次去上学 )可知当空乘人员推着父亲登上飞机的时候,作者感觉像是母亲第一次送孩子上学一样担心,担心他出什么问题。
故划线短语和D项“be away from the correct course”意义一致。故选D。
根据第二段“After flying with my elderly father from Washington, D.C. to L.A. in July, I began to realize that a companion has important tasks that can make a journey easier for older people. ”(今年7月,我和我年迈的父亲从华盛顿特区飞往洛杉矶,之后我开始意识到,一个同伴有重要的任务,可以让老年人的旅程更轻松)可知作者陪同父亲飞行以后,发现有人陪伴能够让老人的旅行更容易更快乐。故D项正确。

【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述语言学习应用程序的功能和作用,即对语言学习者积极、有效,让大部分用户感到满意。
28.细节理解题。根据第二段第三句“But it mainly concentrated on studies with learners who had signed up for language courses and these apps worked as an after-class support, so the results were not always reliable.” 故选A项。
根据第四段最后两句“More than 92% of the users say that the app has met their expectations and 86% consider the app as very good or good. In fact, more than 80% of the users surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language they are learning.”(超过92%的用户表示这款应用满足了他们的期望,86%的用户认为这款应用非常好或不错。
根据前一个分句“Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users”可知,语言学习应用程序创造了一个只有用户知道自己错误的环境,这可以解决学习者被要求说外语时所遭受的紧张表现,由宾语“the performance nervousness that many learners suffer from”并结合语境可推知,address意为“解决”。故选B项。
Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users可知,语言学习应用程序创造了一个只有用户知道自己错误的环境,因而解决了外语学习中遇到的难题,结合宾语为the performance nervousness that many learners suffer from可推测出,address为解决,故选B项。

根据第四段中的“But life is busy — you have friends, family, a job, a partner, and pets. Each requires their own time slots (时间档) and individual levels of attention.(但是生活是忙碌的——你有朋友、家庭、工作、伴侣和宠物。每个都需要自己的时间和注意力水平)”及“To avoid what I call “long-distance friendship burnout”, I try to arrange one weekend a month to meet a friend.(为了避免我所说的“异地友谊倦怠”,我尽量每个月安排一个周末和朋友见面)”可知,作者一直在努力平衡拜访朋友和其他事务之间的关系。 So I’d be a big liar if I didn’t admit I’ve striven to get the balance right over the years.
根据倒数第二段中的“Obviously it means seeing them less often, but at the same time I get to spend more time with them when I do.(显然,这意味着见到他们的次数会减少,但同时我也会花更多的时间和他们在一起)”可知,作者这种会见朋友的新方式可以让她一次只关注一个朋友,能够花更多的时间和朋友在一起。故选B。
根据第一段中的“I miss my friends and they miss me. But many of them are dotted (散布于) around the country.(我想念我的朋友,他们也想念我。但他们中的许多人分布在全国各地)”及下文对作者的经历描述可知,文章主要讲述了作者维系远程友谊的烦恼以及自己想到的解决办法,即保持异地友谊的经验。故选A。

36.根据空前的 “When we start dipping into our stores of energy or when we drop below our typical body weight, the system rings the bell.(当我们开始消耗储存的能量,或者当我们的体重低于正常体重时,系统就会响铃)”以及空后的“After we eat enough food or put on weight, the same hormonal system and brain circuit then tend to depress our appetite.(当我们吃了足够多的食物或体重增加后,同样的激素系统和大脑回路会抑制我们的食欲)”可知,设空处应该承接前文的系统,同时引出下文的the same hormonal system and brain circuit。 G选项“A network of hormones and neural pathways in the brain activate our feeling of hunger.(大脑中的激素网络和神经通路激活我们的饥饿感)”中的“A network of hormones and neural pathways”与前句的system和空后的the same hormonal system and brain circuit进行呼应。故选G。
37.根据上文“Now, “Shifting the focus to pleasure” is a new approach to understanding hunger and weight gain.(现在,“把注意力转移到快乐上”是一种理解饥饿和体重增加的新方法)”以及空后的“Determining whether an individual's weight problem arises from emotional longings or a physical failure in the body's ability to burn up calories is important for doctors to choose the most appropriate medications or behavioral interventions for treatment.(对于医生来说,确定一个人的体重问题是源于情感上的渴望,还是由于身体燃烧卡路里的能力下降,这对选择最合适的药物或行为干预措施很重要)”可知,空处承接上下文说明这种方法已经对治疗的选择产生了影响。D选项“This approach has already had an influence on the choice of treatment.(这种方法已经对治疗的选择产生了影响)”与此呼应,同时this approach指代的是前文的“ Shifting the focus to pleasure is a new approach(“把注意力转移到快乐上”是一种新方法)”。故选D。
38.根据下文的“Through removing tissue, doctors make it impossible for the stomach to accommodate more than a couple of ounces of food at a time.(通过切除胃组织,医生使胃一次不能容纳超过几盎司的食物)”可知,空前讲述的内容跟胃部收缩有关系,同时能够减少胃部的容纳量。B选项“This medical operation dramatically shrinks the stomach.(这项医疗手术使胃显著缩小)”与此对应。故选B。
39.根据后文“The traditional idea is that we can teach overweight people to improve their self-control. However, scientists now realize that the foods themselves are more of the problem. For many people, certain foods cause such a strong response in the brain’s reward circuit that our willpower will rarely, if ever, be sufficient to resist those foods once they are around.(传统观点认为,我们可以教超重的人提高自我控制能力。然而,科学家们现在意识到食物本身才是更大的问题。对于很多人来说,某些食物会在大脑的奖励回路中引起强烈的反应,以至于我们的意志力很少足以在食物出现时抵御它们)”可知,后文主要说明了从心理上如何提高自我控制能力,故C选项“从心理上讲,消除影响因素是一种选择”符合语境,故选C。
40.根据空前的“For many people, certain foods cause such a strong response in the brain's reward circuit that our willpower will rarely, if ever, be sufficient to resist those foods once they are around.(对许多人来说,某些食物会在大脑的奖赏回路中引起如此强烈的反应,以至于一旦这些食物出现,我们的意志力很难抵御它们)”以及空后的“That means never bringing fatty, super sweet foods into our house and avoiding going to places that offer them whenever possible(这意味着永远不要把高脂肪、超级甜的食物带到家里,尽可能避免去提供这些食物的地方)”可知,设空处应该填写的是让我们重新思考食物环境对人们进食产生的影响。 A选项“Therefore, we have to reengineer the food environment.(因此,我们必须重新设计食品环境)”承接上下文,与此相符。故选A。
