Fashion designers are always looking for new materials to work with. Lately, it's all about environment-friendly materials - recycled tyres, mushrooms, even pineapple fibers! What if you want such a pair of shoes? Thaely is here to help.

This sneaker brand out of Dubai wants to fight the growing problem of plastic pollution. Led by 23-year-old Indian businessman Ashay Bhave, they may have found a winning approach; making shoes out of plastic grocery bags. “Thaely” means “plastic bag” in the Hindi language. “I was looking to create footwear that is cost-effective and safe for the environment,” Bhave said in an interview with a newspaper. “I needed to come up with something that uses recycled plastic without creating any more plastic waste.” Plastic bags were the perfect solution. He said five trillion plastic bags are used around the world each year. “I was motivated to find a solution to this problem,” Bhave said.

That solution was the fiber called ThaelyTex. Made entirely from plastic bags, the material looks and feels like leather. That sounds promising. Better yet, the production process requires no additional chemicals and produces no poisonous by-products. The result is a smart-looking pair of white low-top sneakers.

Bhave wouldn't expose the full process for making ThaelyTex, but he said that each pair of shoes was made from up to 15 plastic bags and 22 plastic bottles. Where do they get the materials? Bhave told Elle that was the hardest part. “The biggest challenge we faced was right at the first step of acquiring the plastic bags.”

Finally, they got help from TrioTap Technologies, a waste management plant. Bhave said they offered to collect the bags and also process them into ThaelyTex.

So far, it seems like things are falling into place. There are already hundreds of pre-orders in place. It sounds like they have some plans for the future. “We have a few more colors coming up,” said Bhave. They also plan to put out a high-top model and bring in a line of clothing. Let's hope their growth is also friendly to the environment.

    24. Why did Bhave choose to make shoes out of plastic bags?

    A. To set a new footwear trend.

    B. To test new materials for footwear.

    C. To use recycled plastic in an environment-friendly way.

    D. To reduce the use of plastic bags in his home country.

    25. What was the most difficult task for Bhave?

    A. Having a few more colors for Thaely.

    B. Processing plastic bags into ThaelyTex.

    C. Dealing with many poisonous by-products

    D. Collecting enough production materials

    26. The underlined part “put out” in the last paragraph probably means      .

    A. conserve      B. produce     C. provide      D. broadcast

    27. What can be the best title for this passage?

    A. Thaely: killer of waste plastic bags

    B. Bhave: a promising young man

    C. ThaelyTex: material out of plastic bags

    D. TrioTap Technologies: a waste management plant

The advice to drink eight glasses of water per day to stay healthy could be misleading, a new study has found.

The research looked at data from 5,600 people across 26 countries with ages ranging from seven days old to 96 years old. It found that people may need less than this amount per day, but requirements can vary on an individual basis.

“The science has never supported the old eight glasses thing as an appropriate guideline, mainly because it confused total water turnover* with water from drinks. And a lot of your water comes from the food you eat,” says lead author of the study, Professor Dale Schoeller. “This study is the best we’ve done so far to measure how much water people actually consume on a daily basis, and the major factors that drive water turnover.”

Results show daily water needs peak among men aged 20-29, but they remain the same for women from the age of 20 to 55. The team also found that men’s and women’s water requirements differ by about two glasses, or half a liter. The average 20-year-old man of normal weight living in a temperate climate would take in and lose about 3.2 liters every day. For women, that number is closer to 2.7.

According to the study, physical activity level explained the largest proportion of the differences in water turnover, followed by sex, the Human Development Index (人类发展指数), and age. The researchers found hunter-gatherers and farmers in developing nations had higher water turnover than those in industrialized economies. In other words, the lower your home country’s Human Development Index, the more water you go through in a day.

“That’s representing the combination of several factors,” Schoeller continues. “Those people in low HDI countries are more likely to live in areas with higher average temperatures, and more likely to be performing physical labor. That, plus being less likely to have access to a sip of clean water whenever they need it, makes their water turnover higher.”

The results of the study will have an influence on global warming. The researchers hope that the study will be able to help to predict more specific and accurate future water needs.

    * water turnover:

    水周转量,即水的总交换量,包括了我们摄入的水分和流失的水分。

    28. What can be learned from the new study?

    A. Women need less water per day when turning twenty.

    B. Men consume the most water per day in their 20s.

    C. Men consume two liters of water per day more than women.

    D. The daily water turnover of a man doubles that of a woman.

    29. What’s Professor Dale Schoeller’s attitude towards the eight glasses theory?

    A. Approved.        B. Objective.

    C. Negative.       D. Unclear.

    30. Which are the factors mentioned in the text that cause the difference in water turnover among people?

    a. Gender difference.

    b. Water drinking habits.

    c. The amount of physical work a person performs.

    d. The level of development of the country a person lives in.

    A. acd          B. bcd

    C. abd             D. abc

    31. What does Schoeller explain in the sixth paragraph?

    A. The water shortage problem faced by low HDI countries.

    B. The poor living condition of people in low HDI countries.

    C. Why people living in low HDI countries have higher water turnover.

    D. Why people living in low HDI countries cannot get clean water.

    D

Using the power of artificial intelligence (AI), scientists have revealed new insights into the creation and destruction of mass extinction. Contrary to conventional knowledge, their study suggests that larger extinctions are not always a form of “creative destruction” that allows new organisms to radiate (向周围辐射出去)and evolve. Instead, it suggests that mass extinction is rarely associated with new species of radiation.

Dr. Hoyal Cuthill, the lead study author from the University of Essex in the UK and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, said in a statement, “Some of the most challenging things to understand the history of life are the vast timelines involved and the number of species. New machine learning applications can help us understand the information in human-readable form. This means that we can, so to speak, hold the evolution of half a billion years in the palm of our hand and gain new insights from what we see.”

They concluded that mass extinction and later radiation were not connected as previously thought. Within 5 percent of the most significant periods of disruption(中断)AI detected “big five mass extinctions, seven more mass extinctions, two mass extinction-radiation events and 15 mass radiations. Most importantly, it discovers that massive radiation and extinction rarely occurred with each other, changing the view that greater extinction leads to a kind of deep cycle-like species radiation of nature. It appears that larger extinctions are certainly not the engine of evolutionary radiation. Take the Cambrian Explosion for example and it was about 41 million years ago when a large group of animals first appeared on the first fossil record and the dawn of a high mobile animal equipped with modern physical features.

This new study found that a handful of other notable explosions of biodiversity, including the Cambrian Explosion, usually occurred at a time when they were largely isolated(孤立的)from extinction. Dr. Nicholas Guttenberg, a study co-author from the Tokyo Institute of Technology explained, “Ecosystems are dynamic and you don't need anything to exist to allow something new to appear.”

    32. What's the function of the first paragraph?

    A. To analyze the cause of creative destruction.

    B. To tell us the result of the new study.

    C. To explain the power of artificial intelligence

    D. To present the conventional idea of mass extinction.

    33. What do Dr. Hoyal Cuthill's words imply?

    A. New AI machines learn applications better.

    B. It's difficult to understand the history of life.

    C. New species appear before mass extinction.

    D. AI contributes a lot to the study of evolution.

    34. Why is the Cambrian Explosion mentioned in the text?

    A. To provide knowledge of history.

    B. To highlight the importance of AI.

    C. To support the new study.

    D. To prove the previous view is right.

    35. What is the text mainly about?

    A. A new understanding of mass extinction.

    B. The processes of biological evolution.

    C. Animal species with modern physical features

    D. The relationship between mass extinction and radiation

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

You'll probably be familiar with the North American spelling of the word “airplane”. However, if you've ever been on an international flight leaving the United States and going to another English-speaking country like the United Kingdom, you've probably noticed that there are a few differences between the American and British spellings of words with the same meaning.  36   . The American English spelling is “airplane” while the British English spelling is “aeroplane”. So, why does this happen?

Let's look at the root of the phenomenon.  37  . “British English has a general tendency to favour spellings and words that remind people of French, but American English, when it has deviated(背离) from what British English does, often changes into the direction of seeming less French,” says Lynne Murphy, author of The Prodigal Tongue: The Love-Hate Relationship Between British & American English.

38   .Aeroplane” is no exception. “We're comfortable with ‘aero’ in scientific terms, but as planes became more common things to talk about, the ‘aero’seemed too fancy,” explains Murphy. “In Scientific American in 1906, there was already a claim that ‘  39  ’. Ten years later, ‘airplane’ was adopted by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics as their term. It was considered in the United Kingdom, but that suggestion didn't go anywhere.”

There's a good reason why words that mean the same thing are spelled differently, and why that will continue to happen. “   40   and people are generally proud of it, so they continue to spell differently,” says Murphy.

    A. Every country has different culture

    B. Airplane is a much better word than aeroplane

    C. Your spelling tells people where you're from

    D. The word “airplane” happens to be an example

    E. American English and British English have similar historical origins

    F. A lot of words in the English language are borrowed from other languages, like Latin, Greek, and French

    G. There's a lot of history that goes beyond words and dives deep into politics, government and science

Now at some level, all moms and dads know they shouldn't yell at kids. But if you don't

41   or talk angrily, how do you discipline (管教)?

For thousands of years, the Inuit have   42   an ancient tool: storytelling. Designed to improve kids’ behaviors and sometimes   43   save their lives, oral stories are passed down from one   44   to the next. For example, how do you teach kids to   45   the ocean? Instead of   46   , “Don't go near the water!” Inuit parents take a unique   47   and tell kids a special story about what's inside the water.

Today many parents outsource their oral storytelling to screens, which also   55  . We learn best through things that are   56   to us.
