Four Most Incredible Stadiums in North America
    Estadio Azteca
Maybe it’s not the nicest, but it is a must-visit stadium(体育馆)in Mexico. Lying in the suburbs of Santa Ursula in Mexico City, it is the stadium that hosts the national soccer game in Mexico. When the 1970 World Cup was there, it hosted 10 matches, including the semi-final, and the final between Brazil and Italy. Estadio Azteca is the largest stadium in Mexico, with a capacity (容量)of 87,523.
    Olympic Stadium
Given that Canada doesn’t have that many professional sports teams (at least not with the same popularity of US teams), stadiums north of the border are generally smaller and don’t quite get the same investment(投资)that stadiums south of the border do. The stadium was used for the Montreal Expos, and now is carefully used for soccer games. In fact, it’s set to host some World Cup games in 2026, but anybody who’s been inside can tell you it’s not a stadium fit to host such a big event.
    Madison Square Garden
Madison Square Garden is one of the best stadiums in North America, and not just for sports, but for concerts and other events as well. If you are traveling into New York City by train, you will see the stadium right as you enter the city, above the train station. Before you get to your seats, the outskirts of the stadium actually look like a high-end hotel. It won’t disappoint(使失望)you.
    Michigan Stadium
Would you be surprised to know that the second largest stadium in the world is a college football stadium? That’s right. Michigan Stadium, home of the University of Michigan Wolverines, is the largest stadium in the United States and the second-largest stadium in the world. It has a capacity of 107,601.When you see Michigan Stadium, you know you’re talking about college football.
    21. What do Estadio Azteca and Olympic Stadium have in common?
    A. They were built at the same time.
    B. They both hosted World Cup games.
    C. They don’t have modern technology.
    D. They both can be used to host soccer games.
    22. What can we learn about Madison Square Garden?
    A. It used to be a hotel.
    B. It can also serve as a theater.
    C. It is the best stadium in North America.
    D. It will host some World Cup games in the future.
    23. Which is the largest stadium in the US?
    A. Estadio Azteca.
    B. Olympic Stadium.
    C. Michigan Stadium.
    D. Madison Square Garden.
    B
To personal trainer Sammy Callari, 13-year-old Parker Seward is more than a client. He’s his “little brother”. Over the past year, the pair have bonded. They play basketball together, share meals and dance to hip-hop like no one’s watching.
The trainer was asked to work with the 13-year-old boy, who has Down syndrome, because his coworker who dealt with the boy was out of town last spring. Callari had never worked with someone with a disability before. He was anxious the first day he met Parker. But Parker’s big smile and cheery introduction immediately put him at ease. He reminded Callari of himself when he was a teenager. Like Parker, Callari has also faced his fair share of challenges over the years.
As a high schooler, Callari described himself as being the weak kid. When it came to sports, he was always overlooked. His dream of playing baseball in college quickly faded away. When he went to college, Callari turned to a new sport. His younger brother trained him to become a boxer. Callari participated in five matches. Out of four of those fights he was the underdog, and he won three times. “I know how it feels,” Callari said. “Society tells you that you can’t do this, you can’t do that.” When it comes to Parker, Callari refuses to accept the word “can’t”.
The friends meet twice a week to train. They bike, box, run and work on their core with push-ups. Parker has a short attention span, so it’s Callari’s job to keep him focused. “If Parker can do it, if he’s having fun, even with his frustration, then people will ask, “Why can’t I do that?” Callari said. “That’s the whole task right now.”
Callari recalls Parker’s mom once thanking him for taking a “chance” on her son. Callari told her he never viewed it that way. Parker may be the student, but Callari says he’s also the one who’s learning.
    24. Why was Callari asked to train Parker?
    A. They shared the same interests. B. Parker’s parents had faith in Callari.
    C. Callari took place of his absent colleague. D. Callari was an expert in Down syndrome.
    25. What can we learn about Callari when he was in high school?
    A. He was good at sports. B. He was out of condition.
    C. He was looked down upon by everyone. D. He was influenced deeply by his brother.
    26. What attitude does Callari have to Parker?
    A. Grateful. B. Sympathetic. C. Cautious. D. Critical.
    27. What is the text mainly about?
    A. An inspiring story of a disabled boy.
    B. high schooler suffering lots of failure.
    C. The friendship between a disabled boy and his personal trainer.
    D. Ways of developing friendship with the boy with Down syndrome.
    C
The words “caring” and “empathetic” (共情的) aren’t ones normally associated with technology. Yearsley, an Australian enterpriser who is expert in artificial intelligence (AI), is trying to change that.
Yearsley is the founder of Akin, a robotics startup that currently uses a tablet-based system to help users manage the tasks related to homelife, whether that’s planning meals or reminding you to pay your cell phone bill. Current home devices made by Google or Amazon or Apple use predictive AI to track patterns, strengthen behaviors and manipulate (操控) buying decisions, some of which, she assumes, are questionable or just unhealthy.
In contrast, the AI that she is developing will be designed to run the human home, encouraging healthful decisions such as taking a nightly walk, refilling the fridge and supporting social interactions like lunches or birthday celebrations with friends. “It’s the hardest AI I have ever built for it’s a complex system, Yearsley says.
Yearsley began developing the Akin technology in 2017,when she realized the need to better manage the home is hugely ignored.Besides, she realized that women unequally bear the burden of household work. A United Nations report estimates that women do 2.6 times the amount of unpaid care and domestic work that men do,or close to 30 hours per week in the U.S. alone.
Meanwhile, Yearsley, who has a special-needs child and a relative with disability says it makes sense to focus on the disability field because of the extra in-home needs of users and their caregivers. “We have a lot more work load,”she says.“Are we giving time back to caregivers?I am not going to rest until I give you back 10 hours a week.”
While Yearsley pictures an army of robots someday helping with routine homemade tasks, the first display for Akin will take time and money.Akin has received some early seed from a handful of investors, and was recently selected as a finalist for tech giant LG Nova’s Mission for the Future program, an annual challenge that seeks to identify businesses having potential to improve life and lead society into the future.
    28. What might the Akin’s Al system suggest?
    A. Consuming more drinks to enjoy yourself.
    B. Staying up late working to make more money
    C. Spending more time staying with your family
    D. Purchasing products similar to what you bought.
    29. Which is a contributor to Yearsley’s Al system?
    A. Lots of financial support from investors
    B. The uselessness of current home devices.
    C. Akins’ becoming a finalist for a program.
    D. Heavy burden of housewives and caregivers.
    30. What can be used to describe the Akin’s AI system?
    A. Successful and promising B. Stable and practical.
    C. Thoughtful and innovative. D. Mature and friendly.
    31. What’s the purpose of the text?
    A. To call on people to help the disabled. B. To raise money for a tech giant.
    C. To compare two companies’ AI systems. D. To introduce a futuristic AI system.
    D
Feeling sleepy in the middle of the day? There are many reasons why we get sleepy in the afternoon. Bad lighting, a poor night’s sleep, a boring job, large (carb-heavy) lunches, and more can all contribute to head-bobbing at your desk or falling into a light sleep during a meeting. The best course of action would be to find the root cause of your sleep issue and fix it, but most of us simply head for the coffee pot or the cafe. Instead of that, try climbing some stairs.
Well, now exercise researchers have discovered that walking up and down lights of stairs for about 10 minutes actually gives you a more effective boost (提高) of energy than drinking 50 milligrams of caffeine greedily (the average amount of caffeine found in a cup of coffee, tea, or soda).
In a study called Stair walking, the researchers enlisted 18 “physically active” college women between the ages 18 and 23. The participants reported experiencing chronically poor sleep, adding up to an average of fewer than 45 hours of shuteye each week in the past few years. And they are often a lack of available time during the workday for a dedicated exercise session.
The researchers chose stair climbing as the exercise of choice. Walking up and down the stairs requires no specific clothing, travel time, or even a shower afterward. During the study, on some days the participants alternated (交替) between taking 50-milligram caffeine pills or a placebo. On the other days, they skipped the caffeine (real or otherwise) and climbed up and down the stairs, at a moderate pace, for 10 minutes.
At the conclusion of the study, the researchers acknowledged that there is more research to be done (when isn’t that the case?) but concluded that “A short period of low-to-moderate intensity stair walking has temporary energizing effects that exceed a low dose of caffeine for active young women with chronic insufficient sleep.”
So, the next time you find yourself nodding off mid-afternoon, why not give stairs a try?
    32. What is the main purpose of paragraph 1?
    A. To describe a phenomenon.
    B. To explain reasons of poor sleep.
C To present the topic of stair climbing.
    D. To remind people to drink less coffee.
    33. According to the passage, college women ________.
    A. suffered from sleep disorder
    B. were active in physical workout
    C. were too busy to fall sound sleep
    D. volunteered to participate in the study
    34. What does the underlined word “skipped” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. Released. B. Exchanged.
    C. Became addicted to. D. Missed out on.
    35. What message does the text seem to convey?
    A. Proper stair walking can refresh people.
    B. People tend to fall asleep in mid-afternoon.
    C. A moderate intake of caffeine will be harmless.
    D. Climbing stairs can effectively solve sleep issue.

    第二节(满分25分)
    67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a young boy, I was carefree. Every vacation I looked forward to two things—seeing my grandpa and hearing his wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various odd jobs when he was young and wove his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful tales colored my childhood.
As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa’s stories went on a little long, even a little boring and gradually lost their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take turns sitting in the living room, listening to grandpa tell his stories.
When my grandpa was approaching 91 he suffered from serious memory-loss. It was kind of what doctors called dementia (痴呆), probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s disease. Following the doctor’s directions, we moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get a better care. After that, grandpa hardly came to our house.
One weekend before my grandpa’s birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing grandpa sitting in his armchair, dull-looking, I was consumed with mixed feelings. I wheeled grandpa to the sunshine in the courtyard, talking to him. He couldn’t express himself clearly and spoke in short bursts, but I listened to him patiently and carefully just as I used to be a little boy.
It was then that I noticed a shadow box with some old and yellowish photos in it. I picked one up, in which my brother, several boys in our neighborhood, and I were playing basketball with grandpa cheering us on twenty years before. My mind flashed back to those beautiful memories. Back then, Grandpa was in good physical condition and we were all wearing basketball jerseys, playing and laughing with abandon. I presented the photo to my grandpa, pointing at each member and reminding him of their names. Incredibly, grandpa could speak out the name of every player. I even caught a soft light in grandpa’s eyes and a smile on his lips.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150 左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
A bright idea for grandpa’s birthday came to my mind.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Seeing “the same players” playing there, grandpa seemed to have thought of something.

    【答案】17. A 18. B 19. B 20. C
    【解析】
【原文】W: When I was young, I thought about how to become successful quite often. For one thing, I think the most important quality that a successful person should develop is independence of thought. There are a lot of chances, but not many people can realize that there are chances for them to make good use of. And you should be able to understand what you can do best. When you choose your job, you need to keep this in mind. Maybe you are good at sales; maybe you are good at technology; maybe you are good at starting a new company; maybe you are good at working for a large company. You need to think deeply to find out which one will fit you best. For another, once you have figured out what you want to do and what you can do best, you should focus on it. Do not change your job every year. It is not a good thing to change your job very often. Do not change your focus, either. You should know that if you focus on something, you may be able to do it better than most other people. These points mentioned above may be regarded as secrets of success, and they are the suggestions for youngsters who wish to become successful in the future.

    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
    A
Four Most Incredible Stadiums in North America

A He was good at sports.

    【答案】28. C 29. D 30. C 31. D

    【29题详解】
细节理解体。根据第四段第一句“Yearsley began developing the Akin technology in 2017,when she realized the need to better manage the home is hugely ignored.( Yearsley在2017年开始开发Akin技术,当时她意识到更好地管理家庭的需求被严重忽视。)”,第二句“Besides, she realized that women unequally bear the burden of household work.(此外,她意识到女性承担家务的负担是不平等的。)”和第五段第一句“Meanwhile, Yearsley, who has a special-needs child and a relative with disability says it makes sense to focus on the disability field because of the extra in-home needs of users and their caregivers. (与此同时,Yearsley(她有一个有特殊需求的孩子和一个有残疾的亲戚)说,关注残疾领域是有意义的,因为用户和他们的照顾者有额外的家庭需求。)”可知,Yearsley的AI系统研发的因素之一就是家庭主妇和照顾者的沉重负担。故选D项。
    【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“The words “caring” and “empathetic” aren’t ones normally associated with technology.
    C. To present the topic of stair climbing.
    D. To remind people to drink less coffee.
    33. According to the passage, college women ________.
    A. suffered from sleep disorder
    B. were active in physical workout
    C. were too busy to fall sound sleep
    D. volunteered to participate in the study
    34. What does the underlined word “skipped” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. Released. B. Exchanged.
    C. Became addicted to. D. Missed out on.
    35. What message does the text seem to convey?
    A. Proper stair walking can refresh people.
    B. People tend to fall asleep in mid-afternoon.
    C. A moderate intake of caffeine will be harmless.
    D. Climbing stairs can effectively solve sleep issue.
    【答案】32. C 33. A 34. D 35. A

When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memory-loss.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150 左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
A bright idea for grandpa’s birthday came to my mind.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Seeing “the same players” playing there, grandpa seemed to have thought of something.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 A bright idea for grandpa’s birthday came to my mind. “Why not give grandpa a surprise?” I said to myself. I immediately got down to carrying out my plan. Luckily, I contacted all the players in the photo. To my great delight, they were greatly touched by the plan and all agreed to join in. To make the scene real, I even managed to find all the basketball jerseys, equipment and arrange for a similar-looking basketball court. The big day finally came. After wheeling my grandpa to the court, we began the special game. While playing, I kept an eye on grandpa, waiting for something deep down.
Seeing “the same players” playing there, grandpa seemed to have thought of something. Glancing at grandpa again, I found him cheering us on just like 20 years before. Sitting in the warm sunlight, he cheered and clapped, with a bigger smile. For a while, my mind seemed to flash back to those beautiful days. Indeed, my plan somewhat worked. I was overjoyed that I could do something to delight Grandpa, an important person in my 1ife. I was not sure whether this birthday would stick in his mind, but one thing was certain: it’d definitely stick in mine.
