The Students’ Union is looking for suggestions on how to help people in Africa. Here are some of their opinions.
I think health is the most important. We must make sure the money is spent wisely and is spent first on clean water and health care.
    ——Robin
Education is the most important in African countries. We need to help people help themselves, not just throw money at a problem when it appears.
    ——Rebecca
People give more money to the charity when there is a sudden disaster. It’s good for people to do so, but I also think that everyone should give a small part of his money to the charity. If everyone does a little, it will make a big difference.
    ——Mary
Giving money to the charity can help, but it’s not the final answer. What these countries need most is a good government.
    ——Bethany
The best thing we can do is to send experts like engineers, doctors and teachers to help the people help themselves.
    ——Robert

Sharon first started volunteering at the age of 16. It was the summer before high school, and she hadn’t really understood the meaning behind doing something for others until that day.
Sharon was joining a charity group to the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in Dallas, Texas. RMH is a “home-away-from-home” for families, so they can stay close by their hospitalized (住院的) child at little or no cost.
Sharon remembered her first time walking into RMH — nervous and afraid of doing the wrong thing. After only 5 minutes, she got to know families. “That day, I played with kids, laughed with the adults, and heard many stories,” says Sharon. Since then, she has volunteered with RMH. She likes the joy her volunteering brings to others.
A smile that will always live in Sharon’s memory came from a girl named Caroline — a patient whose family stayed at RMH.
Caroline had the bone cancer (癌症) and her treatment made eating very difficult for her. One day, Caroline’s mom tried hard to get her to eat more of her dinner. To help, Sharon told Caroline if she ate 5 bites, Sharon would do whatever she wanted. Sharon didn’t know that meant dancing in front of everyone! Caroline’s grin grew from ear-to-ear.
“I feel like I’ve become more caring and selfless since I started volunteering. I search for joy in the joy I offer to others,” says Sharon.
Sharon has one piece of advice for those who have never volunteered.
“DO IT! Just try it once and I won’t even have to tell you to do it again. Volunteering is one of those things you can go into with high expectations (期待) and your experience there will be far more than that.”

    C. You won’t start volunteering until you’re told to do.
    D. You will never do volunteering again after trying once.

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, we had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals (渠) and other projects began to be built in my village. “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” my grandma replied.
Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard, so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that the fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed. A policy (政策) was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.

    Unit 6
put up 张贴;make up 编造,组成;open up 拆开,开放;give up 放弃。根据“Because of the sudden disease”可知,此处是放弃旅行计划,故选D。
    7. C 8. D
固定搭配“expect sb. to do sth.”
    12. D 点拨:“provide sb. with sth. = provide sth. for sb.”
time order 时间顺序;general to specific 一般到具体;space order 空间顺序;specific to general 具体到一般。
根据下文“When the problem got worse,... Surprisingly, her tics disappeared when she sang.”
During 在……期间;Before在……之前;After 在……
根据“Kendall flew over his back”可知Kendall 从他的背上飞过,因此这里表示“着陆”,故选D。
根据上句“She was rushed to the hospital, paralyzed (瘫痪) from the neck down.”
根据上句“Sometimes she had to bite a toothbrush to take her mind off the pain.”
though 虽然,尽管;because 因为;if 如果,是否;so 因此,所以。 故选A。
    30. C 点拨:who 谁;when 什么时候;why 为什么;what 什么。
根据文中第二段“I think health is the most important. We must make sure the money is spent wisely... 故选A。
根据文中“...but I also think that everyone should give a small part of his money to the charity. If everyone does a little, it will make a big difference.”
根据文中第三段“Education is the most important in African countries. We need to help people help themselves...—— Rebecca”可知 Rebecca 认为教育在非洲国家是最重要的,我们需要帮助人们自救。根据文中第六段“The best thing we can do is to send experts like engineers, doctors and teachers to help the people help themselves.
根据“I feel like I’ve become more caring and selfless since I started volunteering.”
根据“Sharon didn’t know that meant dancing in front of everyone!”
根据“Volunteering is one of those things you can go into with high expectations (期待) and your experience there will be far more than that.”可以推知“I won’t even have to tell you to do it again”的含义为“在你开始做志愿者之后,你永远不会停止”。
根据短文中的“He began training at school at 7 and joined the Shenzhen Youth Team two years later.”
根据短文中的“He Yiyi has touched the hearts of millions of Chinese fans after an online video showed him playing football with only one leg.”
根据短文中的“He has a message for others. ‘Stop complaining (抱怨) and feeling sorry for yourself. It is only you who can save yourself. Isn’t it better to give others a smile?’
故选A。

    Good morning, everyone.
There will be a charity show called “We Are Family”. The show will be held in our school on June 8th. We are organizing the show to raise money for our classmates who need our help. In our school, some students come from poor families. They love studying and work hard. But their parents are so poor that they have no money to go on with their studies. We hope to raise money to help them stay with us.
The price of a ticket is ten yuan. Of course, donations are always welcome. The show starts at 7:00 p.m. and finishes at 9:00 p.m. There will be singing, dancing and a magic show. We hope all the students will come and support us.
Finally, I want to thank our teachers for their help and support. Thank you for your attention.
文中灵活运用了所学短语,如a charity show,raise money,support us等,体现了作者扎实的英语基本功。
