My name is Sara, When I was little, I played the drums. I also had a guitar. In fourth grade, I started playing the trombone(长号). I practiced about four hours a week. All of this might not seem like a big deal for a lot of kids, but there’s something about me that makes me a bit different from others. I was born without hands. Since I was about one year old, I’ve worn prosthetics(假手).
This year, I got an invitation to join the high school marching band(行进管乐队). I told my mom I wanted to do it. But I had an instructor who thought I would not be able to march in the band—not because it is a high school band and I’m only in seventh grade, but probably because my body is different. All I wanted was to show that I, could do it, so I joined the band. And it paid off!
Music gives me energy. That happens sometimes. One time I was so down and I didn’t even want to get out of bed. Then I hit my MP3 player by accident. A song came on, and I got up and started dancing. It helped me say to myself, “OK, I can get through today.”
Around my musician friends, we all share the same problems, like working out how many beats(拍) there are to a measure(节). I have a hard time counting the beats, but so do a lot of the other kids. It’s a normal problem that we musicians share. When I’m with the band, I don’t feel as different as I do in other situations. It’s just another way that music makes me want to go on, and not to just sit down by myself and not care about life.
    4. How was the author after receiving the invitation?
    A. She seemed unwilling to accept it.
    B. She looked nervous and worried.
    C. She didn’t appear confident.
    D. She was eager to accept it.
    5. Why did the instructor suggest the author not join the band?
    A. She is only in seventh grade.
    B. She is not good at playing music.
    C. She hasn’t a normal physical condition.
    D. She might not work well with others.
    6. How did the author change her bad mood according to paragraph 3?
    A. By playing her musical instruments.
    B. By singing one of her favorite songs.
    C. By listening to a song from her MP3.
    D. By doing some exercise in the house.
    7. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. Music makes the author appreciate life.
    B. The author feels a bit uncomfortable in the band.
C The author dislikes to tell others her problems with music.
    D. Music makes the author feel too busy to focus on her studies.
D 5. C 6. C 7. A

根据第二段“But I had an instructor who thought I would not be able to march in the band—not because it is a high school band and I’m only in seventh grade, but probably because my body is different.”(但我有一个教练,他认为我不能参加乐队,不是因为这是一个高中乐队,我才七年级,可能是因为我的身体不同。)
根据第三段“One time I was so down and I didn’t even want to get out of bed. Then I hit my MP3 player by accident. A song came on, and I got up and started dancing. It helped me say to myself, “OK, I can get through today.””(有一次我很沮丧,甚至不想下床。

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 2018 report by scientists, IQs of a group of students were very high when a very strong wind came; but after the strong wind, their IQs were 10% below. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in. the hot months of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃people become stronger.
Low air pressure (气压)may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low—pressure days. There is “good weather” for work and health. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful, or unhappy today? It may be the problem of weather.
    8. When do people in the Northeast in America have more heart trouble?
    A. In February. B. In July. C. In August. D. In November.
    9. Which is not mentioned in the text that weather has an effect on?
    A. People’s health. B. People’s appearance.
    C. People’s intelligence. D. People’s feelings.
    10. How can people turn out to be at about 18℃?
    A. More hesitant. B. More friendly.
    C. More energetic. D. More generous.
    11. Why does the text mention “People leave more bags on buses and in shops” in paragraph 5?
    A. People can feel best when air pressure is high.
    B. People may be forgetful when air pressure is high.
    C. People may buy more things when air pressure is low.
    D. People can’t remember things so well when air pressure is low.
A 9. B 10. C 11. D

上文“do you feel confident that you will impress others?(你有信心给别人留下深刻印象吗?)” 故选A项。
上文“Whenever you are meeting new people at any social event, you should wear proper clothes.(无论何时你在任何社交活动中遇到新朋友,你都应该穿合适的衣服。)”提示本段内容与穿着有关;下文“If everyone else is wearing business clothes, you should, too.(如果其他人都穿商务装,你也应该这样。)”
上文“If you are going to meet people from a certain business or profession, try looking through a few professional magazines or checking on the Internet ahead of time to get some conversation ideas that are related to their fields of interest.(如果你要和来自某个行业或专业的人见面,试着提前看一些专业杂志或上网查询,以获得一些与他们感兴趣的领域相关的谈话想法。)”

Dear Tom,
I have received your email saying that you are worried about the coming exam. It is common for most of us students, but I think we can get rid of it.
First of all, in my opinion, it’s important for us to have a wise attitude towards exams. They are only a means of checking how we are getting along with our studies, so there is no need to worry too much about the results. Furthermore, study hard every day and make careful plans for every exam. Only in this way can we avoid suffering from the pressure of exams. In addition, enough sleep can make us energetic and enable us to perform well in an exam. Therefore, during the period of exams, we should not stay up too late. We can also try a warm bath or a cup of warm milk before going to bed. They might help us to have a sound sleep.

When Mr. Moose announced the paper airplane contest, all the students were very excited. Paul, who was on the wrestling (摔跤) team, said to other students. “I am the strongest. And I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.”
However, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. He did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.
Brian knew what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big pile of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into the backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded (折叠) an airplane. It didn’t go very far, so Brian took another piece and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them.
