There are different kinds of ways to bring family members closer in different areas and countries and I think it is very important for families to have regular meals together. One of my good childhood memories was having dinner with my parents and two sisters. Because my husband and I both worked and our threechildren were busy. With their studies, we seldom had a chance to get together. But we thought it would be possible for us to sit down and enjoy meals together every week. First, we tried setting fixed days Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. But almost everyone was unhappy. Then my son had the idea that everyone told his or her most convenient days and I would choose the best two days. For a while the children were still unhappy with the idea. They said they would rather spend the time with their friends playing sports. Gradually, though, they began to see the evenings together as interesting and helpful. We made plans for trips. We discussed each other’s problems. We exchanged recent interesting things. After about five months, anyone who had to miss a family meal felt regreatful. And now we all feel that we have been able to build stronger relation-ships within the family that we had before.

Bonfire Night, also called Guy Fawkes Night, is celebrated on 5 November, and the night skies all over the UK are filled with colour. It’s a tradition that started with a historic event. For over 400 years, on 5 November, people in Britain have had bonfires and fireworks to remember a historic event.
The history
In 1605, some English Catholics were angry because King James I was treating them badly. James I was a Protestant, and many Catholics wanted a Catholic country. In November of that year, a group of Catholic men made a plan to blow up the government buildings in London, the Houses of Parliament. An enormous explosion was planned for 5 November, when the king was going to open Parliament. The men put 36 barrels of gunpowder below the Houses of Parliament and waited for the king to arrive. The group decided that one of them, named Guy Fawkes, should light the gunpowder and cause the explosion.
Their plan didn’t succeed. The police found the gunpowder before it exploded and they caught all the men involved in the plot. The men were tortured and killed. To celebrate his survival, King James ordered the people of England to have a bonfire on the night of 5 November.
Bonfires, guys and fireworks
These days, Bonfire Night is a fun tradition with a festive atmosphere, and people don’t connect it to religion or politics. All over Britain there are firework displays and bonfires, with models of Guy Fawkes, which are burned on the fire. The guy is made of old clothes, and the clothes are filled with newspaper. The fireworks are a reminder of the gunpowder that Guy Fawkes hid in the Houses of Parliament. Some people have a small bonfire in their garden, while in main towns and cities there are big bonfires and firework displays.
Food
It’s normally quite cold in November in Britain, so on Bonfire Night people wear hats, scarves and gloves to spend the evening outside. Traditional Bonfire Night food includes hot dogs, burgers and hot baked potatoes. The potatoes are cooked on the bonfire and filled with butter and cheese. There are also toffee apples, which are apples on a stick, covered in sweet toffee, and in the north of England there is a special type of cake called parkin. Toasting marshmallows on the bonfire is also popular.
Firework safety
Fireworks in the night sky are beautiful to watch. But fireworks are dangerous and they can hurt people and damage things, so you should always be careful around them. Never light fireworks inside or near other people or buildings, and never hold lit fireworks in your hands. Also, keep your pets inside because they can be scared by the loud bangs. Last week, I went to Montpellier in the south of France for an exam. So this trip was for business, not pleasure. However, I was looking forward to seeing some of my friends, who studied in Paul Valéry University in Montpellier. I was quite happy to go to Montpellier because it was a part of France that I hadn’t seen before. Upon arriving there, I was greeted at the train station by one of my friends. We decided to go for a walk to Place de la Comédie before heading to our exam. Then, we received a text message from our lecturer saying that the exam had been cancelled. I was initially furious because I had travelled three hours from Toulouse for no purpose.
After venting our anger, my friend and I decided to go to the nearest shopping centre — the Odysseum. I enjoyed my time here, especially since my friends took me to the aquarium there, and I picked up even more French words for sea creatures like a sea lion. Also we joked around a bit whilst there, so my journey to Montpellier wasn’t totally without purpose. After this, we went to Pizza Pino for lunch in the Odysseum. However, after that it was time to indulge in a secret passion of mine — shopping. I loved the shops in the Odysseum but I remembered after buying a new shirt for work and gloves that I need to save money for going home.
So I asked my friends to show me some of the sites, like Place de la Comédie. My favourite site of the whole trip must have been the Arc de Triomphe that is in Montpellier. My reason for this is that behind the Arc is a park area with an aqueduct at the top and an area to stand. From here, my friends and I watched the sunset before I had to go back to Toulouse. Overall, my trip wasn’t a total waste. I had a great day in Montpellier with my friends and learnt some new words in French!
24. Why was the author happy to go to Montpellier?
A. Because it’s beautiful than other places in France.
B. Because it’s the first time the author would see it.
C. Because there were some friends of his here.
D. Because I would have a test to attend.

26. What’s the correct order for the following events?
a. My friends showed me some sites.
b. We went to the Odysseum.
c. The exam had been cancelled.
d. I was greeted at the train station by one of my friends.
A. dabc B. acbd C. dcba D. dcab
27. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. My trip to Montpellier
B. My exam in Montpellier
C. My good friends
D. My business in Montpellier

Will we ever be free from the constant stream of notifications(通知)? The headache caused by your phone beeping and vibrating 24/7? Being contactable whenever and wherever you are?
Don’t get me wrong, I’d find it really difficult to be sociable without social media. It would be extremely hard to keep in contact with friends and family, especially if they live far away. Organising meet-ups would be a nightmare–imagine having to set a date in writing or in person, weeks in advance. What would happen if you were running late? You wouldn’t even be able to ping your friends a text to let them know. Events on Facebook and WhatsApp group messages have made organising everything so easy. They’ve enabled spontaneity–if it’s a sunny day, why not go for a picnic in the park?
But I find social media stressful. If you’re not checking your phone at least every half an hour, you might miss out on something important or fun. If you don’t message that friend you haven’t seen in a while, they might think you’ve forgotten about them. If you don’t remember to shower your bestie with ugly selfies, you might not keep up that Snapchat streak!
If you’re meant to be doing homework, can you resist the temptation to check why your phone is flashing? If you have friends round and there’s a lull in conversation, are you tempted to tap out a quick reply to your friend on the other end of the internet rather than playing a game with your friends on the sofa next to you?
In the 21st century contact is quicker and easier, but that doesn’t mean we have more free time. The ability to send a quick message to one friend means we have time to send one to five others, and before you know it you’re having five conversations at once. How can you really concentrate on any of them? And if your Twitter or Instagram feed is buzzing, why bother going outside to kick a football about or signing up for music lessons? You’re entertained enough–you just never have time to relax, let off steam, enjoy the world. Try leaving your phone at home and doing something productive, maybe even alone, today–you might feel all the better for it.

A. Organising meet-ups is easy without social media.
B. It’s difficult to be sociable without social media.

30. What does the author think of the social media?
A. Convenient but stressful.
B. Interesting and wonderful.

D. We don’t have more free time in 21st century.

Is language, like food, a basic human need without which a child at a critical period of life can be starved and damaged? Judging from the drastic experiment of Frederick I in the thirteenth century, it may be hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue, he told the nurses to keep silent.
All the infants died before the first year. But clearly there was more than lack of language here. What was missing was good mothering. Without good mothering in the first year of life especially, the capacity to survive is seriously affected.
Today no such severe lack exists as that ordered by Frederick I. Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to the signals of the infant, whose brain is programmed to learn language rapidly. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again. A bird learns to sing and to fly rapidly at right time, but the process is slow and hard once the critical stage has passed.
Experts suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ. At twelve weeks a baby smiles and makes vowel-like sounds; at twelve months he can speak simple words and understand simple commands; at eighteen months he has a vocabulary of three to fifty words. At three he knows about 1,000 words which he can put into sentences, and at four his language differs from that of his parents in style rather than in grammar.
Recent evidence suggests that an infant is born with the capacity to speak. What is special about man’s brain, compared with that of the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of, say, a toy-bear with the sound pattern “toy bear”. And even more incredible is the young brain’s ability to pick out an order in language from the mixture of sound around him, to analyse, to combine and recombine the parts of a language in new ways.
But speech has to be induced(激发), and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the signals in the child’s babbling(咿呀声), grasping and smiling, and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dulls the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the child’s nonverbal signals is essential to the growth and development of language.
32. Frederick I did the experiment to _____.
A. find out nursing is essential to a child’s language development
B. to confirm that good mothering ensures the survival of a child
C. to find out what a child would speak if raised in a no-human speech context
D. to confirm that many children would not grow up without learning to speak
33. If a child starts to speak later than others, _____.
A. he will certainly be stupid in adult years
B. he will not necessarily be less intelligent
C. his language development will be limited to babbling
D. he will be insensitive to verbal signals
34. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Efficient nursing contributes to a child’s speech ability.
B. A child may never learn to speak if the sensitive periods are neglected.
C. Like a child, a monkeys’ brain can connect the sight and feel of an object.
D. A child can choose words and phrases that interest him and make new sentences
35. According to the passage, the writer seems to agree that _____.
A. when it comes to language, a child’s brain is highly selective
B. nonverbal signals affect a child’s language development as much as verbal ones
C. A child has his language ability developed randomly and irregardless of age as well
D. A mother’s brain is programmed to instruct language efficiently
C 33. B 34. D 35. A

根据题干中的关键词Frederick I可以定位与该题相关的文中信息在第一段最后一“it may be hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue, he told the nurses to keep silent.(他可能希望发现如果一个孩子没有听到母语,他会说什么语言,他告诉护士保持沉默。)”。 C“To find out what a child would speak if raised in a no-human speech context.(找出一个孩子在没有人说话的环境中长大会说什么)”的信息一致。
根据第四段中的“Experts suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ.(专家建议,言语阶段是以固定的顺序和恒定的年龄实现的,但在某些情况下,言语开始得很晚的孩子最终被证明却是高智商的。)”可知,语言发育滞后的孩子不一定就是智商低的,与选项B中的“he will not necessarily be less intelligent.(他不一定不那么聪明)”信息一致。

根据第五段最后一句“And even more incredible is the young brain’s ability to pick out an order in language from the mixture of sound around him, to analyse, to combine and recombine the parts of a language in new ways.(更令人难以置信的是,年轻的大脑能够从他周围的声音混合物中挑选出语言的顺序,以新的方式分析、组合和重新组合语言的各个部分。)”以及尾段最后一句“Sensitivity to the child’s nonverbal signals is essential to the growth and development of language.(对孩子的非语言信号的敏感性对语言的成长和发展至关重要。)” 故选A项

前文“If you make even one person smile today, you can help make this world a better place.”(如果你今天能让一个人微笑,你就能让这个世界变得更美好。)
空前“In this day and age, where everything is sent via email, Facebook, WhatsApp and Snapchat, it’s a shock to receive a letter through the post.”(在这个所有东西都通过电子邮件、 Facebook、 WhatsApp 和 Snapchat 发送的时代,通过邮件收到一封信令人震惊。) 起到承上启下的作用,同时与下文“Even a postcard with a couple of sentences could really make someone’s day – all for the price of a stamp”(即使是一张只有几句话的明信片,也能让一个人的一天充满乐趣——而这一切只需要一张邮票的价格)也形成呼应。故选G。
空后“Whether you volunteer at your local youth group or take dogs from shelters for a walk, the simple fact that you are giving up your time to help someone else is incredible.”(无论你是在当地的青年团体做志愿者,还是从收容所带狗出去散步,你为了帮助别人而放弃自己的时间这个简单的事实都是不可思议的。) ,与本段的标题相符,同时选项中的“one of the nicest things you can”与下文的“giving up your time to help someone else is incredible”意思一致。故选F。
下文“Whether you’re creative or not, taking time to make something for someone else shows how much you appreciate them. ”(无论你是否有创造力,花时间为别人做点什么,都能表明你对他们的感激之情。)提到了当你要表示对某人的感激之情时,你可以花时间做点什么来表示感激。因而作为标题句可以讲述对于特别的人可以做点什么。选项C.“为一个特别的人做点什么。”与下文的意义一致,符合题意,故选C。
【40题详解】
下文“Perhaps you can tell a friend that you appreciate all they are to you, or remind your mum that you love her. ”(也许你可以告诉你的朋友你很感激他们对你的一切,或者提醒你的妈妈你爱她。)表明对于朋友或你的妈妈他们为你做的一切,告诉他们你感激他们是表达你爱他们的方式,即不必通过说出来也可以表达爱。选项E.“不一定要说我爱你”,符合语境。故选E。

The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting all summer. I didn’t want summer to end. But I was excited about going to high school for my first week.
When I got to school in the morning on the first day I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my homeroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar (不熟悉的) faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend, Casey. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher. She was exciting and fun.
After finishing four periods without too much of a challenge, I didn’t feel too bad about ninth grade.
However, the fifth period changed everything.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The first week passed quickly.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
However, the fifth period changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My teacher’s name is Mr. Valassidis but he told us to call him Mr. V. Mr V told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing, but come on, 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was afraid. The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.
The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things left me at a loss: the size of the campus, the crowds (人群) and the seniors, having a totally different experience than I had ever had before was really exciting. Now, I’m really happy about high school. I have lots of friends in my classes, I really like my teachers and I’m glad to meet new people.
