Over the past 6 years, Zhang Chaofan has given away 1.35 million yuan and raised 5.2 million yuan from the public to help more than 400 people with health problems-including teachers with cancer(癌症)and disabled children in poor families-learn traditional Chinese culture.

Zhang, 29, was born without a left arm in Changchun, Jilin, but her hard work to become stronger has encouraged many people. She was chosen along with 67 other honorees(领奖人)to receive the Eighth National Ethical Role Model award(第八届全国道德模范提名奖)at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on November 5th, 2021.

In 2015, Zhang set up a handwriting and painting school in Changchun. When she found that some parents were unable to pay for their children’s education, she made the lessons free and began providing 300,000 yuan every year to help them.

In early 2020, her school was made to suspend all courses because of COVID-19(新冠肺炎), but it didn’t stop her from helping the poor families. She raised more than 8.9 million yuan and gave them away to Hubei hospitals.

“Women in the new times should have the courage to create value and also have a sense of social duty,” she said. “ It is my great honor to be chosen as a model. This will become a driving force for me to move ahead and keep helping the poor and the disabled.”

Have you ever searched the Internet for some information when you feel uncomfortable? A new study finds that more than eighty percent of Internet users in the United States search for health information online.

Susannah Fox from the Pew Internet Project says doctors are still main source (来源) of health information when people get sick. But the study finds that searching online is one of the leading ways that people look for a second opinion. He says, “Our studies show that forty-four percent of people are actually looking for doctors or other providers online when they need a diagnosis or are planning a treatment design (治疗方案). Two-thirds of Internet users look for information about a certain disease or medical condition online.”

The Internet has also become an important source of spiritual (精神上的) support for people with health problems. Susannah Fox says one in five Internet users has gone online to find other people who have the same condition.

A disease is considered uncommon if it influences fewer than 200,000 people around the world. The rise of social networking (社交网络) has made it easier for people with uncommon diseases to connect with each other and feel less lonely. Social networking is also changing the way some doctors and patients communicate with each other.

Once there were many thousands of Gourma Desert (沙漠) elephants in Mali, a country in West Africa. Now, there are fewer than four hundred. Do you know their situation?

Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly? On the one hand, the elephants’ main lake, their only water source (来源), dried up. On the other hand, the land which the elephants lived on was overused by humans.

To protect the elephants’ living environment, the Mali Elephant Project(MEP) was started in 2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using land and water. As a result, the situation became better and there was more food, forest and grassland.

However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching (偷猎) and illegal (非法的) trade in the elephants increased rapidly. Eighty-three elephants were lost in 2015 alone, and another fifty-one elephants were killed in 2016. “If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020,” said a member of MEP.

Luckily, the voice of MEP was heard. More organizations(组织) have joined together to educate the local people that trading elephants is against the law.
