Ta Luqi, frm Chngqing University, used a material called graphene (石墨烯) t prduce an artificial thrat with a tiny sensr that allws peple with speech impairments t speak nrmally, accrding t a paper published in Nature Cmmunicatins in 2017. Ta has cntinued his wrk n the device fr the last fur years.
Althugh it’s a tiny sensr, it can wrk wnders. The device can detect weak vibratins and prduce sunds acrss a wide spectrum (宽频谱), frm 10Hz t 40KHz. Humans can detect sunds in a frequency range frm abut 20Hz t 20kHz.
“Althugh the speaking impaired peple can’t speak, their thrats can vibrate,” Ta said, “If I put a device made f graphene int their thrats, it can detect the vibratins and make sunds using electrical signals.” Even whispers, screams and cughs at different frequencies can be recrded and encded by the device, and it can arrange them int grups. When the device detects the sunds in a certain grup, it will reprduce the wrds, phrases r sentences, accrding t Ta. “But the speaking impaired peple need t classify their wn language sunds in grups and memrize them, just like typing keys n a keybard,” Ta said.
Ta’s artificial thrat has brught the pssibilities f graphene t reality.
