The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday that celebrates the full moon, a good harvest and family unity. In ancient times, people were easily separated by distance (距离). Ancient poets often wrote about missing their loved ones when seeing the moon. There are many Chinese poems praising the beauties of the moon and expressing people’s longing (想念) for their friends and families at Mid-Autumn. Looking at the Moon and Longing for One Far Away, a famous Tang poem, was written by Zhang Jiuling (678-740).
Over the sea the moon grows bright; We gaze on it far, far apart.
Lovers complain of long, long night; I rise and long for my dear heart.
Candles blown out, fuller is light; My coat put on, I’m moist with dew.
As I can’t hand you moonbeams white, I go to bed to dream of you.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
The highlight (亮点) of this poem is the first two lines. The poet describes a picture of unity by showing us the moon, a shining wheel, rising slowly above the ocean, and its light bathing everyone on this planet. The poet uses “grow (生)” instead of “rise (升)” to describe the moon that rises above the sea. This word makes us feel the moon is full of ▲ .
Seeing the moon, the poet thinks of his loved ones, who is perhaps standing under the same moonlight somewhere far away. In this way, he shows his longing for his lovers.

例文:
Respecting the elders
Through the history, being filial and respectful to the elders has been a traditional virtue of the Chinese nation.
Last weekend, I helped my grandparents their trip to Beidaihe. On Saturday morning, together with my grandparents, I searched the Internet for the train schedule, the weather in Beidaihe, and some hotel information. In the afternoon, I went to the train station and managed to buy two tickets for my grandparents although there was a long queue. After dinner, I packed into the suitcase the things my grandparents need, such as clothes, glasses, an umbrella, and a map. The next morning, I went to the station to see them off. Waving goodbye to them on the platform, I felt happy for them and wished them a safe journey.
Respecting the old and cherishing the young is a traditional Chinese virtue. I am proud of what I have done for my grandparents.
