Four homes built using everyday objects
Can newspapers and bottles be used as building materials? After touring these four homes built using these objects you might just believe the answer is yes.
Plastic Bottle Village, Bocas del Toro
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Truer words could not describe Robert Bezeau’s project which began in 2012. After collecting tens of thousands of bottles, Bezeau recruited a team of locals to construct a building using the unwanted materials.
The Bottle Houses, Cape Egmon, Prince Edward Island
The Bottle Houses on Prince Edward Island, Canada, are the creation of Edouard T. Arsenault and his daughter Rejeanne. The father and daughter began construction in 1980. Over the months, they collected empty bottles, and by 1981 they opened the house to the public. Since then, the building has remained open to visitors, with sunny days being the best time to visit.
Earthship Biotecture, Taos, New Mexico
Michael Reynolds built his first Earthship when he was 23 years old. Starting out with nothing more than empty bottles, Reynolds set out to create a home that was not only sustainable, but also easy enough for someone without a construction background to build. Earthship Biotecture offers nightly stays. Self-guided tours are also available.
The Paper House, Rockport, Massachusetts
When Elis F. Stenman built his summer home in 1922, he turned to paper for materials. The design has proven to be quite durable, as it’s still standing nearly 100 years later. The home has been open to visitors since the 1930s, and only began charging 10 cents per person in 1942 when it became a museum. Today visitors can experience the Paper House for themselves for $2 for adults and $1 for children.

A. It was designed by Bezeau. B. It was finished in 2012.

Beijing Opera, as one of Chinese traditional opera forms, is regarded as the national opera of China and well received all over the world.
Beijing Opera arose in the late 18th century with a history of more than 200 years whose origin can date back to some old local operas, especially the Anhui Opera. It became fully developed and recognized by the mid-19th century. Now it's the biggest kind of opera in China, whose popularity spread all over the country, becoming the most popular dramatic (戏剧的) form on Chinese stage.
There are four basic methods employed in a Beijing Opera performance: chang, nian, zuo, da. Generally speaking, chang means singing, and nian recitation (背诵) and oral communication, while zuo means the facial and body expressions and acting and da is Chinese Kungfu. Beijing Opera also has four main types of performers namely Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou. Sheng and Dan mean the main roles in the opera. The painted face, in Chinese called 'jing', is a name for the role of the man that has some special characteristic or appearance. Chou is easily understood from the role's name as a clown with an ugly appearance, who is to provide light relief and comedy.
In recent years, Beijing Opera has tried to make some changes, including improving the performance quality. Widely spreading all over China with great influence, Beijing Opera contains the spirit of Chinese national culture, but the shortage of funding has become a big problem as the form enters the 21st century. There is no doubt that it is a treasure of Chinese culture!
4. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A. The history of Beijing Opera.
B. The great influence Beijing Opera has on us.
C. Beijing Opera is popular in China.
D. The relationship between the Anhui Opera and Beijing Opera.
5. When a performer is saying something to another, which method does it belong to?
A. Chang B. Nian C. Zuo D. Da
6. A funny man whose nose was all white in stage most probably acted the role ________.
A. Sheng B. Dan C. Jing D. Chou
7. What will be the future of the Beijing Opera?
A. Very bright. B. Certainly dark.
C. More popular. D. Much uncertain.
C
Lunch is a part of Chinese culture. When I'm back home in England, I often miss Chinese lunch.
At home, at work, at school, English lunchtime is far from a formal meal of the day. It seems that we can't wait to finish lunch as quickly as possible. People working in the office take out packed sandwiches that are not delicious. Work canteens(餐厅) are crowded with people too busy to eat, rushing to the checkout(收银台) with something in hand so that they can quickly eat up on the way to another meeting. A lot of work in England leaves little time to have our meals and enjoy them. Perhaps this is why so many of us hold such unhealthy relationships with food.
The way we plan our days in England shows we don't care about mealtimes. Meetings, lectures, interviews and so on are all planned from 12 a.m. to 2 p.m. In Beijing lunch often starts from 11:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. And owners of many shops gather in small groups to share a meal, which is hardly seen in England. I have never experienced such a culture where finding time to eat is so important.
In China, food is shared and the time is enjoyed as a moment of get-together in busy days. This is a value and practice we should hold in our lives in England. In China food is not only a necessity(必需品), but also a time for get-together with friends and family, and I love it.
8. Why can't most English people enjoy their lunch?
A. They think British food is terrible.
BThey are anxious to go shopping.
C. They are too busy with work.
D. They have much housework.
9. Which does the author like most about Chinese lunch?
A. Its atmosphere B. Its taste
C. Its price D. Its kinds
10. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. English people don't take mealtimes seriously.
B. English lunchtime lasts one and a half hours.
C. English people never experience Chinese culture.
D. English people like to get together in groups.
11. What is mainly talked about in the text?
A. The best way to experience Chinese lunch.
B. Lunch differences between China and England.
C. Suggestions of enjoying English culture.
D. The stressful lifestyles of English people.
D
Mark Twain (1835-1910) — we've all heard the name, but what makes him “the father of American literature” as classic US author William Faulkner once called him?
Mark Twain is someone Americans are taught to love. Older relatives, English teachers and the media always praise him. But when you actually take the time to read TheAdventuresofTomSawyer, you find that his work is more wonderful than you could have ever imagined.
The novel describes a young boy named Tom Sawyer growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. He explores the countryside on a riverboat with his friends, falls in love with girls, starts secret clubs and searches for treasure. Twain's idea of childhood is magical—a time of imagination, wonder and, of course, adventure.
More importantly, through the eyes of Tom Sawyer, Twain cleverly makes fun of US culture. For example, Tom hates going to church, and Twain uses scenes of Tom there to mock religion and its old traditions. “Often, the less there is to justify a traditional custom, the harder it is to get rid of it,” he writes in one chapter.
Twain's writing is full of these kinds of critical points about culture and politics. That's why he is so loved in the US — he wasn't afraid to state his opinions, and he did so clearly. For instance, Twain didn't like US wars abroad. In 1900, after the US invaded the Philippines, Twain wrote in a newspaper article: “We do not intend to free, but to subjugate the people of the Philippines…We have gone there to conquer.” He also believed strongly in women's right to vote in elections and gave a famous speech on the subject, called “Votes for Women”, in 1901. “Tom was a glittering hero once more—the pet of the old, the envy of the young,” Twain writes in TheAdventuresofTomSawyer. But he could just as well be describing himself.
12. After reading TheAdventuresofTomSawyer, you are likely to think according to the author.
A. it's not worth all the praise. B. it's even better than you expected.
C. it's as wonderful as you expected. D. it's better to read it with teachers.
13. In the third paragraph, the author mainly .
A. indicates what makes Tom Sawyer's adventures so wonderful
B. explains where Twain's idea of childhood comes from
C. shows how naughty and adventurous Tom Sawyer is
D. gives a brief description of the novel
14. What does the underlined word “mock” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A. Make fun of. B. Show respect for. C. Give examples of. D. Give reasons for.
15. Twain is so loved in the US because .
A. he showed readers a magical childhood that everyone would love
B. he criticized American culture and society clearly and cleverly
C. he wrote bad things about US wars abroad
D. he supported women's right to vote

Yoghurt
It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn't understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn't have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent's money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It's just yoghurt. What's the big deal?” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn't seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then — bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.
Paragraph 1:
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised.

Paragraph 2:
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done.

【46题答案】
【答案】Dear Jack,
I am very glad to learn that you are coming to China this summer. As for the problem that you mentioned in your letter, I have some tips for you.
Firstly, just like learning any other foreign language, when learning Chinese, you should not be shy. On the contrary, you should be confident and brave, and try to speak Chinese whenever you can. This is very important. After all, the more you use Chinese, the better you will learn it. Besides, you’d better speak Chinese slowly and clearly. In this way, you can make yourself understood by others easily. Thirdly, if others canˈt understand you, or you don’t know how to express yourself, it is also a good idea to use pictures or body language to help you. I really hope you will find my advice useful and helpful.
Looking forward to seeing you soon!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节:读后续写(25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. “Mum, why are you so generous to this stranger while so mean to me when I asked for a yoghurt?” I explained that if we were blind to the poor man’s situation he would be freezing. He didn’t have a home or food to eat after all. We could spare five dollars even if we were financially stressed. Finally, my son nodded and fixed his eyes on his yoghurt.
Paragraph 2:
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. He took his yoghurt and handed it to the man outside his window. Even if it was just a matter of a few spoonful of yoghurt, it was all he had, and he gave it to someone who needed it more than he wanted it. He showed me that I was doing well as a mother. There are always blessings to count if we open our eyes, and always have the opportunity to be a blessing for someone else.
