For my 56th birthday, my daughter, Beth, bought me two beautifully carved wooden butterflies. I hung them in prominent(显眼的) places on my walls so that I can see them often during the day. Each time I do so, they give me a wonderful reminder of love.
My daughter and my love of butterflies goes back many years. After a long battle against cancer, my mom passed away when I was only 25 years old. Beth was only a baby at the time and never got to have any memories of her grandma. I tried to make up for it by telling her stories of my mom but each time I did, I could see that there was a little sadness in Beth's eyes. One day when she was only seven or so we were outside at the playground. Beth suddenly said how much she saddened not having her grandma around. Well, sometimes I comforted her and this time I told her how much her grandma loved her and that Grandma still remained positive in the last weeks of her life. I said she was watching over her from Heaven and that maybe she was even hitching(搭乘) a ride on the back of a butterfly to come down and get a closer look. At that very moment, a butterfly appeared flying around Beth's face and then flew away. We both laughed with our hearts full of love and joy.
Since that moment all of those years ago, both Beth and I seem to attract butterflies like flowers. Whenever we are outside, they seem to fly down, circle around us, take a good look, and then fly away. And every time, we are reminded of my mom's love watching over us. The only time this doesn't happen is during the coldest months of the year when there are no insects of any kind. But now during those times I can take a look at the two beautiful wooden butterflies my daughter bought me and still be reminded of that love.

B. We all need reminders that we are loved in our life.
C. It is difficult to maintain family ties during difficult times.

"We're getting brighter and brighter and brighter," warns Paul Bogard, author of the upcoming book, End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light.
Bogard says the developed world's desire to light up the night has gotten out of control. "Things like gas stations and parking lots are lit now 10 times as bright as they were just 20 years ago," Bogard tells Celeste Headlee, host of weekends on All Things Considered. "It has everything to do with marketing, really. The gas station at the corner has figured out that if they turn up the lights, more people will be attracted to those lights."
And, Bogard says, all that light is having some unintended consequences. For one, it affects our sleeping patterns, he says. Others say the effects of light pollution are worse, which involve the bird migration(迁徙), and humans' extra weight problems.
Richard Stevens, an epidemiologist at the University of Connecticut Health Center, was one of the first to make the connection between bright, artificial light and breast cancer. Stevens' research found that artificial light can interrupt our body clock—and affect our production of melatonin(褪黑激素). "We know for sure that the lighting in the modern world can interrupt our body clock, and that cannot be good," Stevens tells Headlee.
Cities such as Santa Rosa, Calif., and Brainerd, Minn., are turning off a certain number of streetlights. Even Paris seems willing to cut down on its illumination(照明) to reduce light pollution.
The French Environment Ministry recently announced that starting this summer, office buildings and storefronts will have to turn off artificial lights between the hours of 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. Major landmarks like the Eiffel Tower will continue to be lit.
Yet Bogard says he hopes Paris will lead a lighting revolution. "The fact that Paris, the city of lights, is choosing to control their use of light at night is fantastic, and can serve as a model for cities all over the world," he said.
Perhaps, someday soon, we'll get off the subway, look up at the dark city sky, and see the stars of the Milky Way again.
28. Why do gas stations turn up lights?
A. To attract customers. B. To ensure safety.
C. To motivate employees. D. To comfort the passers-by.
29. What concerned Richard Stevens about the lighting?
A. It may cause overweight. B. It may lead to a waste of resources.
C. It might affect the migration of birds. D. It may contribute to breast cancer.
30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The subway will shorten its service hours.
B. We are losing the beautiful dark sky view with the stars.
C. The night lighting of the Eiffel Tower will be turned off.
D. We won't see the artificial lights of office buildings at midnight.
31. In which section of a website can the text be found?

Processed foods—cheap, convenient, and beloved by many Americans—have once again been proven harmful to our health. Higher consumption of ultra-processed foods was associated with an increased risk of heart disease and death, according to a study carried out this week in the Journal American College of Cardiology.
Past research has also linked these preservative-laden(含防腐剂的) foods to weight gain, cancer, and early death. Many studies, including the recent cardiology paper, have proven the health risks are higher for people who eat a greater quantity of processed foods.
Each daily serving of ultra-processed food—such as a single protein bar or a 12 oz can of soda—was associated with a 7% increase in the risk of dying of cardiovascular disease and a 9% increase in the risk of dying due to heart disease, based on data from more than 3,000 adults followed for nearly 20 years.
Still, processed foods are "ubiquitous" in our diets, lead author Filipa Juul said in a press release. Although we know they're bad for our health, ultra-processed foods account for more than half of the daily calories in the average American diet. Even seemingly healthy options like protein bars, breakfast cereals, and most industrially produced breads are filled with preservatives and added sugar, salt, and fat.
"As a poor diet is a major risk factor for heart disease, it represents a critical target in prevention efforts," Juul, a researcher at the New York University School of Public Health, said in the press release. The authors recommended taxing(征税) processed foods with added sugar as a possible incentive(刺激) to reduce consumption.
More importantly, they acknowledged the need to make more nutritious choices available and affordable, especially for populations that have historically lacked that access. "Ultimately, the goal should be to make the unhealthy choice the hard choice and the healthy choice the easy choice," Robert J. Ostfeld, MD, MSc, and Kathleen E. Allen, MS, RD, wrote in an editorial accompanying the study.
32. How does the author illustrate the effect of ultra-processed food in paragraph 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By listing figures.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By making predictions.
33. What does the underlined word "ubiquitous" in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Unavoidable. B. Priceless. C. Complicated. D. Luxurious.
34. What does the last paragraph focus on?
A. Methods of reducing consumption.
B. Different factors for heart disease.
C. The accessibility of healthy food.
D. The necessity of resisting processed foods.
35. What is the best title of the text?
A. Taxing Processed Foods Remains an Urgent Task
B. Mysteries of Heart Diseases Have Been Uncovered
C. Choosing Your Diet Carefully Makes a Great Difference
D. Eating Ultra-Processed Foods Increases Heart Disease Risk

A lot of people may feel puzzled about viewing art, for it is generally thought to be too abstract and professional. 36 Try these tips next time you're viewing art and see if you can transform your experience.
Spend time with art. If you only take a moment to consider a work of art, you'll only generate a moment's opinion. 37 Art lets you put life on pause. That's one of its greatest aspects. Even if it's just for a few moments, stop worrying about what you need to do next or where you need to be and really dive into the artwork.
Determine the basics. When you're first encountering an artwork, identify the basic information about it. If it's a painting, see if you can figure out the type of paint used. When possible, identify the artist, when they created it, and whether it is a still life or a landscape. 38
Recognize your feelings. Recognize your feelings as you first view the art. 39 Is it natural and unintentional? How does it affect your feelings? This subjective(主观的) response is a more immediate reaction, but it is worth regarding, because art is about the artist communicating and expressing ideas.
40 Art is subjective, so finding what you like and don't like about a work of art is a key factor to better understanding it. If you don't like a certain style, don't worry—there is something out there for everyone, from Abstract Expressionism to Photorealism.
A. Do some homework.
B. Find your likes and dislikes.
C. Is the artwork forceful and dramatic?
D. Is there a right or a wrong way on how to view art?
E. However, it doesn't mean you can't view art if you're not an art expert.
F. These simple observations can help you gain a better understanding of the artwork.
G. The most enriching and fascinating artwork requires plenty of time to fully appreciate.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
During summer vacation when I was twelve, a sawmill(锯木厂) was operating in the woods near our farm. Early each morning, I'd watch the men cut down big trees, saw them into logs, and deliver the logs to the mill.
The logs were dragged by a team of horses named Jack and Billy. They were gentle, and I petted them every chance I got.
One day, Mr. David, the mill owner, said he'd pay me 15 cents a day to bring fresh water to his men. In 1942, that was a lot of money! I said yes.
One afternoon when Jack and Billy were pulling a log up to the mill, a stick injured Jack's right front hoof(蹄). After Mr. David removed the stick, the horse driver said that the foot should be doctored. But Mr. David said he didn't have time for that. He said if the horse couldn't earn his keep, he'd get one that could.
I felt sick inside. Jack and Billy were my best friends! I couldn't stop thinking about Jack's foot and what Mr. David had said.
For the rest of the day the team pulled logs from the woods. By nightfall, Jack was limping badly. Mr. David told his crew that the mill would be closed for three days because he'd be away for the Fourth of July. He offered to pay me a dollar to feed and water the horses while he was gone. I quickly agreed.
The next morning, I rode my bike to Mr. David's barn. I wanted to look at Jack's hoof. I reached down and grabbed the hair on the back of his leg, as I'd seen Mr. David do, and Jack lifted up his foot so I could see.
The part inside of the big iron shoe looked red and mushy(烂糊的).
I didn't know anything about medicine, and Mr. David said he wouldn't pay for a doctor. But if he didn't earn his keep, Mr. David would get rid of him. But what could I do?
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At my house, I saw our neighbor, Mr. Sherman who raised horses and knew how to care for them.
The morning when Mr. David returned, I jumped on my bike to the mill.

Peking Opera into Campus
Last Friday witnessed an activity with the theme "Peking Opera into Campus", which is aimed to develop students' passion for art and traditional Chinese culture.
Highlights of this event included live Peking performance by renowned actors in our auditorium, which aroused students' interest in the unique form of art. Additionally, all the actors and actresses had an interaction with the audience after the performance. They gave a further explanation of the art form and demonstrated many graceful moves and vocals.
This activity was highly spoken of by every student, who has gained a deeper insight into magnificent Chinese culture and consequently took more pride in our time-honored civilization.
第二节
At my house, I saw our neighbor, Mr. Sherman who raised horses and knew how to care for them. I told him all about Jack, and he said he'd take a look at the injured hoof. When we got to the barn, Mr. Sherman told me to get a foot tub of warm water. He washed Jack's hoof with a brush, then put it into the tub of water to soak. We found a large can of animal salve, which Mr. Sherman put on the wound. He said that Jack's foot would be well in a few days. I had been trying to act like a grown-up, but in my excitement I gave Mr. Sherman a big hug to thank him.
The morning when Mr. David returned, I jumped on my bike to the mill. Just as I arrived, the team was dragging a big log from the woods. Jack pulled with all his might, and he wasn't limping! When the team stopped, I dropped my bike and ran down to the horses. I wrapped my arms around Jack's big head and hugged him while Billy laid his nose on my shoulder. At that moment, I was filled with happiness. I knew that my friend wouldn't have to be sent away.

W: Hello. How can I help you?
M: Hi, my name is Smith. I booked a table for three yesterday. Can I change it to six?
W: Let me see. Yes, you booked a table at 7:00 p. m. Now you want to change it to six people?
M: Yes. By the way, is there a parking lot near your restaurant?
W: We do have a parking lot nearby, but it is usually crowded. It's better to take a taxi here.

W: There is no need to be in such a rush. Just slow down. You're driving too fast.

M: So should I just abandon the idea? I'm not that out of shape.
W: You should at least have a physical exam before you begin. After all, it has been five years since you played football.

M: OK. I believe what you say is right. After all, you are an expert on physical exercise.
Text 10
Hi, my name is Anthony. My question for today is: Are you good at saving money? If your answer is no, don't you think it might be time to change? Saving money now gives you more money to play with down the road.
I save money just in case there's an emergency, or in case I lose my job. I feel comfortable when I know I've got no loan but at least three months' safety net to support me until I can get back on my feet. To do so, I opened a separate savings account in addition to my regular bank account, and I always try to keep three months' wages in there. I had to use my savings recently for some bad luck. The other day, when I was driving, I ran into a big rock. It was expensive to get my car fixed. But I was lucky that I wasn't injured.
I have to admit that I don't have a high salary, but I'm slowly building my savings and making sure I have a little bit of money saved over each month. Well, my friends, do save some money as you enjoy your lives. By doing so, you will feel much more secure.
