To Rehan Staton, his childhood was a life of privilege―loving parents, a supportive big brother and a pleasant, private school education. Everything changed when his mother left the country and his father lost his job.
He had to sleep with a heavy jacket on when it was cold. He was always hungry. He said he couldn’t concentrate at school and would sleep during class. He went from straight As to near the bottom of his class. A teacher told him he needed special education, which made him hate school.
Staton spent his high school years as an excellent athlete, training to become a professional boxer. He had won a lot of martial arts competitions. But a tragedy struck him in his senior year when Staton suffered serious tendonitis (肌腱炎) in both shoulders. He couldn’t lift either arm for months. His dream of becoming a professional player failed. He struggled to apply to colleges but was refused by all of them.
Staton’s body slowly recovered from martial arts and he got a job as a rubbish collector. Many co-workers couldn’t help but ask him a simple question, “What are you doing here? You’re smart. You are too young to be here. Go to college.” It was the first time someone outside his family had spoken highly of his intelligence. It was the co-workers that emboldened him to return to school.
Several co-workers put Staton in touch with a professor at Bowie State University. The professor was impressed with their conversation and persuaded the admissions board to change its former decision.
Going to college forced Staton’s older brother, Reggie, to drop out. They both knew someone had to be working full time along with their dad. It was a decision Reggie made on his own.
After receiving a 4.0, Staton succeeded in becoming a student at the University of Maryland. But he still had a long way to go to attend Harvard Law eventually...

    24. What finally changed Rehan Staton’s happy childhood?
    A. His brother’s losing the job.
    B. His serious health problem.
    C. His father’s sudden death.
    D. His mother’s leaving the country.
    25. What does the underlined word “emboldened” in the fourth paragraph mean?
    A. Force. B. Direct. C. Encourage. D. Accompany.
    26. Why did Staton’s elder brother have to drop out of school?
    A. He wanted his brother to study further.
    B. His father asked him to leave school.
    C. He had lost interest in most lessons.
    D. He had to go out to find his mother.
    27. What will the writer mainly talk about next?
A.What Rehan Staton planned to do after entering Harvard.
    B. How Rehan Staton managed to be admitted to Harvard.
    C. Why Rehan Staton decided to choose to go to Harvard.
    D. When Rehan Staton would be successful in Harvard Law.

Austin City Limits (ACL) Music Festival is a music event that is held every year. It takes place at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas, and is hosted over two weekends in late September and early October, each lasting three days. It is an event that has grown in popularity since it began and now has as many as 450,000 people taking part in it.
The festival was founded in 2002 and is produced by C3 Presents, which is an Austin-based company. At first, it was inspired by a weekly music series broadcast, filmed live by KLRU, the local Austin television station, which is also called Austin City Limits. The first event was only two days long and 67 bands performed on five stages and the audience was around 25,000.
By 2003, around 100 bands were taking part in ACL Music Festival and in 2004, the event grew to over eight stages and extended (延续) to three days. The top attendance at the event was 75,000 people. The festival even won the Pollstar’s Festival of the Year Award in 2005. That year became known as the “Dust Bowl” year as the festival crowd kicked up so much dust that it was difficult for festival goers to breathe. The organizers settled this problem by using watering devices on the site.
With the exception of heavy rain in 2009, the festival continued over the next few years without any major dramas. In 2013, the organizers decided to extend the event over two weekends. Another important fact about that year was that the event was canceled on the third day of the second weekend due to heavy rain causing floods. Besides, the festival was called off due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020.
In recent years, there have been many excellent actors performing at the festival. Other than that, there are many other attractions at ACL Music Festival. These include Austin Eats and ACL Art Market. Furthermore, there is an ACL Cares section at the festival that allows festival goers to give something back to the community.

One of the most popular street food found in China is no doubt the barbecue (烧烤). A new series, called Chinese Barbecue, tells the story of this popular food cooked over hot coals on just about every street corner in cities and towns across the country. Barbecued meat is an important part of people’s nightlife.
Shown on June 20, the series has had more than 80 million clicks on the video site bilibili.com. To find the most popular barbecue stalls (摊位), the production team traveled to more than 500 locations in 30 cities across the country. Some viewers compare Chinese Barbecue to Midnight Diner, a Japanese TV series telling stories from late-night informal Japanese bars.
“I’m happy to hear this comparison because Midnight Diner is a good program, and we share the same topic ― night food,” Chinese Barbecue’s director Chen Yingjie said. “However, in terms of the tone, they are quite different.” He said that Midnight Diner focused more on food itself, though there was some conversation while people were eating. In contrast, the night food scene of Chinese people means joy and a more lively spirit. People eating these barbecue snacks develop a feeling of connection, which can be a cure for loneliness.
The barbecue, regarded as the most ordinary and common night street snack, is different from home-made food by mothers as that is a symbol of family and kinship. The barbecue is where you go to become connected to people in society. And unlike official business lunches, during which people are rather reserved and polite, the barbecue lets people relax with old friends and new friends, leaving a lasting impression of friendship.
The world, as a whole, holds deep-rooted good feelings toward the barbecue, either for the taste or the warmth produced by fire. “What we should do is to present the Chinese barbecue just the way it is because with its special ingredients (食材), ways of cooking, and more importantly, the special environment and people, the world will recognize it and might fall in love with it just as we do,” said Chen.
    32. What does Chinese Barbecue center on?
    A. The diverse street food.
    B. The nightlife in large cities.
    C. The barbecued foods across China.
    D. The story of barbecue stalls owners.
    33. How does Chinese Barbecue differ from Midnight Diner?
    A. It focuses more on the diners.
    B. It has less conversation.
    C. It shows the eating habits.
    D. It targets at the lonely.
    34. What can be inferred about the barbecue from Paragraph 4?
    A. It influences people’s lifestyle.
    B. It plays a role in people’s relationship.
    C. It is more delicious than home-made food.
    D. It serves as formal business lunches sometimes.
    35. Why did Chen Yingjie choose the barbecue as the topic of the series?
    A. To help the world understand China.
    B. To research a special way of cooking.
    C. To show the feature of Chinese food.
    D. To introduce the history of the barbecue.

It was late, about 10:15 p.m., when Janice arrived at the Bellport, New York train station. She’d just returned from visiting her mother who lives in Philadelphia. Brought up by the single mother alone since 4 years old, Janice made it a rule to visit her every other month. She quickly got off the train, walked into the parking lot and jumped into her car. All these were so familiar to her since she had traveled the route so many times. After a short break, Janice happily began the 20-minute drive home. She knew that her husband and seven-year-old son were eagerly waiting for her return.
She was practically driving on automatic pilot(自动驾驶仪): a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway, and then ― wham! Out of nowhere on that awful night, a minivan (小面包车) hit Janice’s car, knocking her backward some 100 feet onto the railroad tracks. Janice sat in the car, injured but mostly just shocked by the impact (撞击) and by the vehicle’s airbags. Realizing what had happened after a few seconds, she was scared and tried to escape from the car. But she failed to open the door. Hopeless, she could only pray that someone might pass by and save her.
As it happened, Peter was getting ready for bed. He’d just closed his book and was going to bed when he heard the high-pitched sound of metal on metal and shattering glass coming from not far outside his bedroom window. A volunteer firefighter and retired teacher, Peter, 64, never stopped to think. He grabbed a flashlight and ran out of the door in his nightclothes, knowing that there could be a car accident nearby and it was difficult for the police to reach there in a short time on such a dark night.
The first car he came upon, 2,000 feet from his front yard, was the minivan that had hit Janice’s. Peter rushed over to check if the driver was alive. Once he concluded the driver was OK, he looked around and spotted Janice’s car on the railroad tracks.

All of a sudden, he heard a sound: the bells signalling an on-coming train.

As a volunteer firefighter, Peter calmly ran to the passenger side.

    1—5 ACCAC 6—10 ACBCB 11—15 BCACA 16—20 BCABA

    A篇 21—23 CDB
根据第三段第三、四句“The latest Botley comes with a remote control... So kids will have to pay attention to... actions they want”可知,最新款Botley带有遥控器,遥控器上面有:向前、向后、直角转弯等指令,所以孩子们在输入数据让Botley执行指令前,必须注意周围的环境。
根据第五段第一句“Baby Yoda, or The Child, swept Toy Fair this year as a must-see item.”可知,Baby Yoda, or The Child在今年的玩具展上成为了必看的展品。 Baby Yoda, or The Child是最受欢迎的玩具。故选D。

根据第一段第二句“Everything changed when his mother left the country and his father lost his job.”
根据第四段第二至四句中的“What are you doing here? You’re smart. You are too young to be here. Go to college”可知,许多工友认为Staton非常聪明,不应该这么年轻就做清洁工,他应该去考大学;根据第四段最后一句中的“him to return to school”可推知,Staton的同事鼓励他重返学校。由此可推知,画线词emboldened应意为“鼓励”,与C项意思相近。故选C。
    26. A 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段第二句“They both knew someone had to be working full time along with their dad.” 故选A。
根据最后一段第二句“But he still had a long way to go to attend Harvard Law eventually...”

根据第二段中的“At first, it was inspired by a weekly music series broadcast, filmed live by KLRU, the local Austin television station”可知,这个音乐节的产生受到了一个电视节目的启发。故选B项。
根据第三段中的“That year became known as the ‘Dust Bowl’ year as the festival crowd kicked up so much dust that it was difficult for festival goers to breathe”可知,在2005年的音乐节上,观众太多引发了一些麻烦。故选D项。

根据本段内容,尤其是本段中的“The barbecue is where you go to become connected to people in society”“the barbecue lets people relax with old friends and new friends, leaving a lasting impression of friendship”可知,本段通过烧烤与家里制作的食物和商务午餐的对比,说明了烧烤可以将人们的关系拉近,使人们放松,留下持久的友谊,故选B项。

    Dear Lucy,
I am glad to tell you that after staying at home for nearly half a year due to COVID-19, we are allowed to return to school now.
Some effective measures have been taken by our school to protect us from being infected. Firstly, we must take our temperature before entering the school gate every day. If someone is found to have a fever, he must be sent to hospital for further examination. Besides, wearing a mask is a must, which is beneficial to both students and teachers. And when we have dinner, the social distance and the serving chopsticks are demanded.
I’d like to learn what your school life is like. Write to me and best wishes!
    Yours,
    Li Hua

Para 1: All of a sudden, he heard a sound: the bells signalling an on-coming train. Peter knew the train was speeding toward them and saw its headlight in the distance. Without hesitation, he rushed to Janice’s car and banged on the driver’s side window. “Help!” Janice shouted loudly. Peter responded immediately, “Don’t worry. I will get you off right now!” He repeatedly pulled the handle with the force, but due to the strong impact, the door was too severely damaged to open.

Para 2: As a volunteer firefighter, Peter calmly ran to the passenger side. After smashing the door open with a rock, he pushed aside the airbags, grabbed Janice’s arms, and pulled her toward him across the passenger seat until he could help her out. Once Janice was out of the car, he carried her to safety behind a signal box a few feet away as quickly as he could. Within about 30 seconds, the train crashed into Janice’s car. Peter’s heroic actions were reported by the local newspaper, but he simply said, “ Any firefighter would have done what I did. We’re always on duty.”

    Text 1
M: Here is your dorm. You can put your things there.
W: Thank you for your help.
M: You’re welcome. I enjoy helping others and making new friends. I’ll show you around later.
    Text 2
M: Rose, you look worried. What happened?
W: Well, I want to get into that class. But I just found out there were so many people on the waiting list. I guess chances are probably slim.
    Text 3
W: I would rather watch a drama than a comedy tonight.
    M: Why is that?
W: I find comedy films are too silly.
    Text 4
M: Mom, I’ve got a part-time job at a supermarket. Three hours a day weekdays and all day Saturday.
W: Congratulations, Tom. But are you sure you can handle it? What about your homework and your piano lessons?
    Text 5
M: Did you rent that club for the party this April?
W: No, it was already booked through the end of next month. Maybe we can get it for the next party in August.
    Text 6
M: How long have you worked as a secretary?
    W: About 7 years.
M: What do you think of Mr. Big?
W: Well, he’s a good boss on the whole. But there are some things I don’t like.
    M: Like what?
W: Well, he never remembers his appointments.
    M: And what else?
W: I don’t like the way of his speaking.
    Text 7
M: Mr. Clark wants you to make the public announcement tomorrow afternoon.
W: Me? But I’m the worst speech maker though!
M: Come on! Don’t be modest. You’ve done this a thousand times before!
W: That doesn’t mean I have to like it. Has the necessary statement already been prepared?
    M: Yes.
W: What media will be there?
M: Only 3 television crews and 5 newspaper reporters.
W: Only! I hope I don’t get stage fright (怯场)!
M: You’ll be fine. The time has been set for 4:00 tomorrow afternoon in the reception hall.
W: OK, I’ll have to go over the material as well as do some practice.
M: I’ll bring it to you at once. Thank you very much.
    Text 8
W: Today we’re pleased to have Danny, a famous chef, to teach us how to make a cake.
M: Actually I’m a little nervous as I’ve never been on TV before! It seems that demonstrating(演示)in front of the camera is much more difficult than doing it in front of hundreds of people.
W: Ha, ha! Don’t worry, Danny. Before starting to make the cake, I think the audience will be interested in knowing more about you. How long have you been working as a chef?
M: Well, more than 20 years. I first worked in a French restaurant and then in a five-star hotel. I’m working in a small upstairs café now because I can talk to my customers freely. However, my dream is to open a cookery school.
W: I hope your dream will come true. Today we’re going to make a chocolate cake, right? Let’s get stared, shall we?
    M: Sure.
    Text 9
W: You’re so lucky, Todd. You travel all over the world. I never leave Chicago!
M: Yeah — but it’s hard work. I just practice, practice, practice and play tennis all the time. I don’t get time to see much.
W: What about last year? Where did you go? Tell me about it.
M: Well, in January I was in Melbourne for the Australian Open. It’s a beautiful city, sort of big. There’s a nice mixture of old and new buildings. January is their summer, so it was hot when I was there.
W: And what’s Dubai like? When were you there?
M: In February. We went from Australia to Dubai for the Dubai Tennis Open. Hot, very dry, very modern. Lots of really modern buildings, white buildings. An interesting place. I enjoyed it.
W: And Paris! That’s where I want to go! What’s Paris like?
M: Everything that you imagine! Very beautiful, wonderful old buildings but lots of interesting modern ones, too. And of course very, very romantic, especially in May. Maybe I can take you there sometime.
    Text 10
W: This is Science in the News. I’m Barbara Klein. On this program this week, I’ll tell about sharks. They are among the oldest animals on earth. Sharks are famous for attacking other sea creatures and even people. Yet they have been threatened by human activities. Scientists say sharks have lived in the world’s oceans for millions of years. Today, there are more than 350 different kinds of sharks. Most sharks are about two meters long. And the biggest whale shark can grow to a length of twenty meters. Sharks have an extremely good sense of smell. They also sense electrical and magnetic (有磁性的) power linked to nerves and muscles of living animals. These power senses help them find their food. They eat fish, other sharks, and plants. Some sharks can be found in very cold areas, but most sharks live in warm waters. Most sharks live in oceans. However, the bull shark leaves ocean waters to enter freshwater rivers and lakes.
