When she was just 9 years old, Hilde Lysiak became famous across the United States for reporting on difficult news stories. Now Hilde has written a book telling her own story, and sharing some of the challenges she faced.
Hilde’s father was a reporter for the New York Daily News. When she was young, he often took her to work with him, and she developed a strong interest in news stories and reporting.
When she was 8, Hilde started her own newspaper, called the Orange Street News (OSN). Her family lived on Orange Street. Hilde did the writing, her sister Izzy took pictures, and her father helped her organize and print the newspaper.
Hilde wanted to cover stories important to everyone in her town. She got into a habit of going on her bike, looking for news stories. Following the rules her father had taught her, she researched and reported stories in her monthly newspaper. She also started reporting on her own website.
OSN suddenly became famous across the country when a murder happened in town, and 9-year-old Hilde was the first person to report it. However, not everyone was happy about Hilde’s efforts. Some people criticized her parents for allowing her to report on something as unpleasant as a murder. Others criticized Hilde for “pretending to be a reporter”.
Hilde was upset by the complaints. But she never let that stop her reporting. In 2019, she made the news again when a law enforcement officer threatened to arrest her for filming him. Hilde knew her rights as a reporter were protected under the Constitution (宪法). Later, the town apologized to Hilde for the officer’s actions.

As the world tries to quit fossil fuels, there’s a lot of focus on renewable energy sources like wind and solar. But one very promising source of energy comes from deep inside the Earth. And old oil wells could help greatly in developing this power.
“Geothermal” power is based on heat that comes from deep in the earth. ‘Geo’ means Earth and ‘thermal’ means ‘heat’. Earth’s core, deep in the center of the planet, is about as hot as the sun’s surface and is expected to stay that way for billions of years. In some places, where the rocks have lots of holes, this heat comes out in different kinds of hot springs. Humans have been using the Earth’s heat for hundreds of years.
In general, though, geothermal energy requires drilling deep into the Earth. There are different ways of collecting the heat and using it. But these deep geothermal wells can easily produce huge amounts of heat and electricity for hundreds of years—all without polluting. Solar power depends on the sun, and wind power depends on wind. That means they’re not constant. But geothermal sources can produce power day and night all year long.
But geothermal energy also has a big defect—drilling down farther, which can lead to greater heat and more powerful energy sources, to create a geothermal plant is hard, and it costs a lot of money. Now people are starting to explore a clever idea that could make geothermal energy far cheaper: using oil wells that are already drilled.
Oil wells are usually used for a few decades before running dry. Then they are capped and left unused. Now, the US Department of Energy is encouraging scientists and companies to use existing oil wells to create geothermal energy. They have recently given out $8.4 million to four geothermal projects that will work on this technology.
If these projects work well, they can be used at thousands of old oil wells around the US.
8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The advantages of the geothermal energy. B. The reasons for exploring the Earth’s heat.
C. The explanation of the geothermal power. D. The present application of the Earth’s heat.
9. What is the positive side of energy from geothermal sources?
A. It is always available. B. It’s cheap and eco-friendly.
C. It’s powerful and widely-used. D. It’s multifunctional and clean.
10. What does the underlined word “defect” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Potential. B. Imperfection.
C. Innovation. D. Adventure.
11. Which is a better method to create power from the Earth’s heat?
A. Exploiting old oil wells. B. Developing hot springs.
C. Using existing active oil wells. D. Drilling down deeper into the earth.

For Damen Fletcher, chess is much more than a game. This inspiring California man uses chess to coach young people from some of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in Southern California and beyond to develop self-confidence, and find purpose in their lives.
Why does Fletcher choose chess to help kids and teens make the right moves in life? The answer lies in his own life story. Fletcher, who learned to play this game of strategic skill at the age of 13, grew up in Compton, California. After heading farther to college, he returned home to find his friends struggling. As he explains: “Some of them had fallen into prison. Homeless and unemployed... and I just wondered, ‘Why did I have such a different outcome?’ And it was chess.”
So he set about building his own organization “Train of Thought” to help inner city kids find their own king or queen and life goals by learning problem solving, teamwork, and forward planning skills at an early age through chess, while enjoying themselves.
Fletcher highlights in an interview with Fox News that every game of chess is 75 to 100 moves, and every single move that your opponent makes presents a new problem for you to solve, so chess is a game in which the weak can turn out stronger. As Paige Stevenson, a 7th grader and already a keen chess player thanks to Fletcher’s enthusiasm, tells the channel, “He has taught me not to give up because you can move and find a way out instead of losing.”
His organization has partnered with more than 100 schools to date and has taught more than 50,000 students the game of Kings in California, with plans to expand in the US. It is an old proverb that children learn from play, and this is something that Fletcher is keen to stress. And as his website also explains: “If you think chess is just a game, you’re not playing it right.”
12. What do we know about Damen Fletcher?
A. He had a rough childhood. B. He likes nothing but chess.
C. He is a positive chess master. D. He is a famous social activist.
13. What inspired Fletcher to found “Train of Thought”?
A. The value of chess. B. The college education.
C. His pursuit for success. D. His friends’ requirement.
14. Why did the author mention Paige Stevenson in paragraph 4?
A. To compare different ideas. B. To show Paige’s enthusiasm.
C. To provide other information. D. To support Fletcher’s opinion.
15. What can be inferred about the game of Kings from the text?
A. It can help kids grow up happily. B. It may get kids addicted to chess.
C. It will become a required course. D. It is active in schools in the world.

I knew this dreaded day would come sooner or later. It came too fast and there I was, in the waiting room of the dental clinic, miserable with butterflies in my stomach.
My parents told me to sit up, stop wringing(拧) my hands, and take deep breaths to keep calm. It worked. I was calm for maybe two seconds when I heard my name being called. I pretended to be deaf but my mother touched me to get up. I forced myself to step forward and immediately stumbled (绊) over a toy and the boy who was playing with it. My clumsiness got me the attention of everyone in the room. Being stared at by so many pairs of eyes was too much and I hurried to the consultation room as fast as I could, leaving the boy crying for his broken toy.
I had refused my parents’ offer to accompany me. I meant to show them that I was brave enough to face the treatment on my own. I regretted it right now. Thankfully, I forgot my anxiety as I looked around the dentist’s room. Tools of different sizes were arranged neatly in a plate on the tiny table which was connected to a chair with buttons and a light hanging right over it. I avoided looking at my dentist in the eye as I took my seat on the chair shakily.
I tried to calm myself down, imaging how brave I would be. After a while, I was taken by great surprise when all of a sudden the chair moved and I was lying down facing the bright yellow light. When I caught sight of the dental drill on the plate, panic related to a bad childhood experience involving the drill kicked into me.
注意:1.续写的词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I cried out and almost jumped out of the seat.

My parents were waiting at the door anxiously when I ran out excitedly.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I cried out and almost jumped out of the seat. Watching my frightened look, the dentist asked me what was the matter in a soothing voice behind her mask. I felt embarrassed and ashamed for my rude behavior and explained the bad experience in the past to the dentist. After hearing my story, the dentist smiled and encouraged me to forget the past and face the challenge bravely. I felt eased with the dentist’s comfort and care. Everything was going smoothly and I was grateful to the dentist.
My parents were waiting at the door anxiously when I ran out excitedly. I knew they would find it hard to believe what just happened. I was about to describe the process of treatment when I saw the boy whose toy I just broke. I went up to the boy and his parents and apologized for my misbehavior. All the people sang high praise for my honesty. After that, I followed my parents to the exit to tell them the most proud experience I ever had.
