It is said that most people have no more than 30 friends at any given time, and 400 over the whole of their lives. However, on social networking sites, most users have about 150 friends. If these numbers are correct, then friendship means different things in different situations.
Also, there are no rules about friendship. There is no instruction in making friends, maintaining friendship, and finishing friendship if we want to move on. People have very different opinions about this: some people would die for their friends and they value them more than families. Others say that friends are temporary, and only there to help each other until they are no longer needed. If people with those different views become friends, this can lead to problems.
Because of these different definitions of friendship, it is easy to be unhappy about our friendship. We may want it to be deeper or closer, or we may want to acquire more friends in our lives. Sometimes we simply do not have the time to develop our friendship, or we fear we have left it too late in life to start. If we move to another country or city, we have to find ways to make new friends again.
This dissatisfaction shows us how important friendship is for most of us. We should not think that it could be too late to build friendship. We also need to understand that the need to be around other people is one that is shared by many. Therefore, we should not be too frightened of starting to talk to people who in the future may become our friends: it is likely that they would like to get closer to us too. Remember what people say: strangers are friends we have not met yet.

Once upon a time, friendship was easy. I miss how spending time together used to be as simple as walking across the hall or picking up the 1 to say, “I’ve got wine, and I’m coming over.” I miss the way we could laugh and cry or talk about nothing for hours because we had 2 to go and nothing to do. And 3 we did, and whatever it was, laughing, crying, or talking was much more important anyway.
These days, friendship feels much 4 . Instead of walking across the hall with a bowl of cookies, we need to 5 for hours or board a plane to get together. Family responsibilities and work obligations(职责) leave us with 6 minutes, and when we collapse(瘫倒)in bed at night, we can barely gather the 7 to wash off our makeup, 8 carry on a phone conversation. Days and weeks have gone by and we communicate only by 9 or Facebook updates, and by the time we do get together, there is so much to say that we aren’t even sure where to start.
I want a handful of real, true, and 10 friendship—not flocks of fake friends and casual acquaintances(熟人). I want to know that we’ll be friends whether we 11 within 10 minutes’ walk or a thousand miles away from each other. I want to know that we’ll be friends whether it’s as simple as walking across the street or as 12 as planning a girls’ weekend together. I want friends who are there not just when it’s easy, but when it’s hard.
True friendship isn’t about being 13 ; it’s about loyalty and trust and the ability to be who we are with each other. True friendship has no limitation of time, 14 or differences. True friends know us inside out. They know our 15 , so they better understand our present situation and will continue to be part of our future.

Everyone likes to have friends who are 1 (rely). When what we say matches what we do, we earn trust and friendship. Therefore, the 2 (important) of keeping one’s promise cannot be stressed too much.
There was a story of someone 3 (break)his promise to his friend. Two men 4 were travelling through a forest together promised to help each other whatever danger threatened them. They had not gone far when a bear rushed them from some bushes. One man was a good climber, and climbed a nearby tree very quickly, but the other, seeing that he had no chance alone against the bear, fell flat 5 his back and pretended 6 (be)dead.
The bear came up to him and sniffed at him. The bear thought the man was dead, so he went off into the wood again without hurting him. When he had gone, the other traveller came down from his tree, and smilingly asked his partner what the bear 7 (say) to him.“My best friend,” he said, “I saw the bear put his mouth close to your ear.” “He told me to tell you,” replied the other 8 (calm), “that you were 9 great coward, and that in the future I ought not to trust those who make fine promises, but will not stand by their friends in danger.” Don’t trust fine promises 10 you trust the person who makes them.

Ⅰ.
根据第一段中“If these numbers are correct, then friendship means different things in different situations.
根据第二段中“there are no rules about friendship”“There is no instruction in...”和“People have very different opinions”可知,本段主要讲述了不同的人对友谊有不同的理解。
根据最后一段中“the need to be around other people is one that is shared by many(与他人在一起的需求是许多人共同的需求)”可知,我们大多数人都需要有朋友。故选A项。
可知这里应指拿起电话(picking up the phone)。故选A。
由 to go和nothing to do的并列关系可知选B。
此处重点理清did指代什么,由上文可知,did相当于had somewhere to go and something to do,再根据上下文逻辑关系可知选C。
故选A。
no wonder意为“难怪”,in case意为“以防万一”,let go of意为“放弃”,均与文意不符,故排除。
文章开始作者虽然表达了对过去简单友谊的怀念,但由上一段最后一句“I want friends who are there not just when it’s easy, but when it’s hard.” 故选A。
由上文提到的“...whether we live within 10 minutes’ walk or a thousand miles away from each other.”
4.who/that 考查定语从句。
fall flat on one’s back某人仰面朝天。
pretend to do sth.
