“ It’s impressins abut blindness that are far mre threatening t blind peple than the blindness itself,” says Daniel Kish, president f Wrld Access fr the Blind.
Peple’s assumptins abut capability(能力)cntribute t a lw number f blind peple wrking in r studying STEM( science, technlgy, engineering, and math) fields. Peple with lw r n visin have a lt t ffer in these fields. They are just as capable as anyne else at experimenting and making new discveries.
One tl that prvides accessible ways t help the blind interact (互动)with data and scientific equipment is the Sci-Vice Talking LabQuest 2. Fr thse wh dn’t decide their wn wrking hurs, a trial f fur-day wrkweeks f 35-hur wrk weekly withut a drp in pay amng 2500 wrkers in Iceland has shwn the ld schedule may truly nt be the mst prductive frm f labr(劳动). The reprt, cnducted by the research rganizatin Autnmy and the Assciatin fr Sustainability and Demcracy, fund that negative markers like burnut (过度劳累), stress, necessary vertime, and discnnectin with friends and family all went dwn, as wuld be expected, but that prductivity remained at wrst unchanged, and ften imprved in thse wrking shrter hurs.
The trials were such a success that fllwing their cnclusin in 2019,Mass renegtiatin(重新协商)by labr unins means that 86% f Icelanders are nw wrking nn-traditinal wrkweeks which culd include 5-t-6-hur wrking days r fur-day wrking weeks.
“ This study shws that the wrld’s largest-ever trial f a shrter wrking week was a success,” said Will Strnge, directr f Autnmy.
The main argument is that “burnut” depletes the ability f wrkers t be prductive. A lack f prductin will smetimes result in a demand fr vertime, especially by managers, further increasing burnut and decreasing prductivity. In thse wh cannt affrd t be less prductive, like nurses fr example, burnut simply results in negative health utcmes.
Hping t see if they culd replicate(复制)the prductivity gains in ther cuntries, the Reykjavid City Cuncil started this trial, mstly at public ffices, but als in private firms, t measure perfrmance and wrker well-being fr fur years.
Cmpared with nn-participating firms r ffices, prductivity remained the same r increased in thse participating, but it wasn’t free. Instead, as necessity is the mther f inventin, a srt f mass re-imagining f peratins was needed t achieve prductin r service gals with the reduced hurs. This invlved,as the reprt details, the shrtening r early ending f meetings, and ften a ttal rerganizatin f wrk prcesses t find where prblems culd be remved.
What des Autnmy’s reprt shw?
Fur-day wrkweeks are mst prductive.
Reducing regular wrk hurs has many benefits.
Stress has n cnnectin with wrking hurs.
Wrkers shuld be flexible abut their wrking hurs.
13.Hw did labr unins in Iceland mst prbably react knwing the results f the trial?
They felt sad fr mst Icelanders.
They became wrried abut wrkers’ prductivity.
They knew it was time fr a change.
They decided t encurage hard wrk.
14.What des the underlined wrd “depletes” in paragraph 4 mean?
reduces B. shws C. lses D.apprves
15.Why des the authr say “it wasn’t free” in the last paragraph?
it’s nt really wrth trying fr many cmpanies.
It is necessary t make sme changes t ensure prductivity.
It csts a lt t re-imagine peratins.
It is very difficult fr mst cmpanies t change their rutine.
