    1. What was Reeve's "wildly successful Hollywood career" like?

    (He raised awareness for good causes and spoke out about health, education and child protection to help those most in need.)

    2. How was he injured? Why was it considered a disaster?

    (He was thrown off his horse and broke his neck.

    His injuries were so severe that he had no movement or feeling in his body at all and even needed a machine to help him breathe. He was unable to continue with his charity work and his career.)

    3. How did he come out of the "nightmare"? From where did he get the strength?

    (He gained the strength from the ongoing support of his wife, family and friend and from focusing on his goal to walk again.)

    4. What did he do as an advocate for medical research?

    (He advocated for people with back injuries and disabilities, raising millions of dollars in support of medical research.)

    语法:同义词和反义词

    同义词是意义相近或相同的词;反义词是意义相对或相反的词。英语是世界上同义词最丰富的语言之一。据统计,英语语言中同义词、近义词的数量约占总词汇量的60%。虽然英语同义词数量庞大且错综复杂,但大体可分为两大类:完全同义词和相对同义词。

    完全同义词在任何一种语言中都是寥寥可数的,因此,绝大多数同义词还是相对同义词。这些相对同义词的词性、词义、结构或用法等的相同或相近会造成一定的困惑。因此,掌握一定的辨析技巧,才能做到事半功倍。

    辨析同义词的方法:

    我们一般从三个方面进行区分,即语法、语义和文体。语法主要是词性、搭配、句式等的区分;语义主要是词义的本义、引申义、比喻义等的区分;文体主要是正式和非正式、褒义和贬义等的区分。

    例如:

    speak(说话):to use your voice to say sth.

    say(说):to speak or tell sb. sth.,using words

    remark(谈论):to say or write a comment about sth./sb.

    state(陈述):to formally write or say sth.,especially in acareful and clear way

    narrate(讲;叙述):to tell a story

    address(演说;演讲):to make a formal speech to a groupof people

    tell(说):to express sth. in words

    talk(说话;讲话;谈话):to say things,to speak in order togive information or to express feelings, ideas, etc.

    chat(闲聊;闲谈;聊天): to talk in a friendly informal wayto sb.

    whisper(耳语;低语;私语;小声说): to speak very quietlyto sb.so that other people cannot hear what you are saying

    gossip(传播流言蜚语;说三道四;说长道短): to talk about other people's private lives, often in an unkind way
