The poem When This is Over is now an educational tool which is studied like the works of Homer. Professional writer Laura Fanuc wrote the poem to cheer herself up. To her surprise, it went popular online. That’s the old news.
The new news is that the poem has become an education assignment for a humanities class in the South Bronx. It has inspired about 80 sixth graders to write their own version (版本).
The students are enrolled in the American Dream School, a charter school for English language learners and immigrant students. Teachers Daniel Zauderer and Niki DeGiorgio introduced their class to the poem, assigning them to study it with the aim of cultivating gratitude through poetry. These students stay at home with laptop computers, through which they connect with their classmates and teachers.
Fanuc’s poem is basically a list of everyday activities she can’t do because of social distancing, and that shall never take for granted again. It ends with an inspirational message of hope that we all will rise from this ordeal (磨难) to be better people.
The teachers challenged the students to brainstorm what they had taken for granted and what they hope people will learn, and to express themselves in a poem of their own. The class followed Fanuc is format (格式), reworking the poem. The students showed some love for DeGiorgio and Zauderer in their version of the poem, with the line: “Seeing my teachers face to face.”
“Working remotely during this pandemic is tough some days,” DeGiorgio said in a Face book post. “What brings me hope and joy is the beautiful hearts, minds and words of my students.”

A.It was written by Homer.
B.It was published in the newspaper.

Leek Town Warriors was a girls’ football team Which used to get routinely defeated every time they turned out, until James Henry stepped in two years ago. He took the job when the previous coach quit and transformed the team’s fortunes. With the help of his assistant Andy Austin, they started training hard in April 2020.
Some players had never kicked a football before joining the team, so training them took hours of hard work and patience. After a good few weeks, they got down to training and really started to take it in what the coach wanted. “I insist on doing the basic stuff well and letting the girls decide what they feel they need to work on.” James said.
James’ first season was ruined by the pandemic, which forced him and Andy to get creative with training. They organized team-building activities with the girls to help them bond on and off the field. James then spent the sessions they could hold focusing on the basics of football like passing and shooting, bringing the girls up to a good standard.
James watched the girls develop over the course of last year, and in September they played their first match of the new season. They won the game, and since then went on an unbeaten run of eight games. The team’s star player, 15-year-old Chelsea, has also impressed the audience individually, becoming the top scorer in the league with incredible 30 goals.
James said, “All the effort that the girls, us coaches and parents have put in to get this point has been enormous. If I hadn’t had the Support of Andy helping me every week, this would have been an impossible task. So I’m incredibly grateful to have him on side. All we want is to bring more girls into the game and show that it’s not all about having the best players; it’s about hard work and giving everyone the chance to play.”
28.Why did James Henry take over the soccer team?
A.Because he wanted to try his fortune.
B.Because he wanted to turn things around.
C.Because the previous coach recommended him.
D.Because he hoped to fulfill his champion dream.
29.What did James do to change the situation?
A.Pick experienced players.
B.Develop players’ patience.
C.Lay stress on basic skills.
D.Make decisions for the girls.
30.What did the team achieve after James was in charge?
A.They won the league championship.
B.They stood out in James’ first season.
C.They scored 30 goals in the season.
D.They won regularly and secured promotion.
31.What can we learn from the story?
A.Talent is the key.
B.Joint efforts matter.
C.Every dog has his day.
D.Time and tide wait for no man.

It has always been assumed that traffic noise is a problem unique to animals. But a new study by Ghotbi-Ravandi, a botanist at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, has revealed that plants suffer too.
Scientists have previously suspected that plants may be able to sense sound waves as they are struck by them. A number of experiments have confirmed this in recent years——plants continuously affected by ultrasound(超声波) in the lab have shown a range of adverse responses including the expression of stress-related genes, abnormal growth and reduced sprouting(发芽) of seeds.
Yet blasting(轰击) plants with ultrasound is not the same as growing them in the presence of actual traffic noise. To this end, Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi decided to set up an experiment to study precisely this question.
Working with a team of colleagues, Dr Ghotbi-Rayandi grew two species in his lab. The plants were grown from seed and allowed to mature for two months in the same space before they were divided into two groups. One group was exposed to 73 decibels(分贝) of traffic noise for16 hours a day. The other group was left to grow in silence. After 15 days had passed, samples were taken from the youngest fully expanded leaves on every plant in the experiment and studied.
None of the plants exposed to the traffic noise did well. Analysis of their leaves revealed that all of them were suffering. The chemical compounds indicating stress in plants were found at much higher levels in the samples exposed to the traffic noise. The team also found that a range of hormones normally associated with healthy growth and development in plants were present at significantly reduced levels in the plants exposed to the noise.
His findings make it clear that, though plants lack ears, the impact generated by the noise of traffic still bothers them enough to trigger strong stress responses. The next question is whether all noise pollution affects all species in the same way.
32.What does the underlined word “adverse” mean in the second paragraph?
A.expected. B.passive. C.negative. D.opposite.
33.What can we know about the plants exposed to traffic noise?
A.Their seeds failed to sprout.
B.They have high-level hormones.
C.They contain more stress-related compounds.
D.They barely have expanded leaves.
34.It is possible that the next step of the study is to ________.
A.reduce noise pollution B.experiment with other plants
C.publish the findings D.confirm previous assumptions
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage?
A.Noise Pollution Has to Be Reduced B.Plant Protection Is Urgently Needed
C.Plant Growth Is Prevented by Ultrasound D.Plants Are Badly Affected by Traffic

It happened right at the start of my summer vacation when I was in elementary school. “Well, you’re overdue for measles anyway,” my mother told me when I started showing symptoms. My cousins had recently suffered through measles, so my mother was anticipating the warning signs.
Honestly, I don’t recall much about having the measles, although my mother has told me I had a very severe case. The only thing I clearly remember is our black-and-white mutt, Boots, who stayed near me the whole time I was sick. He kept me company, resting quietly with me during the day and pressing warmly against me at night.
As I recovered from it, the doctor recommended plenty of fresh air and exercise. I must have been depressed after my sickness because all I wanted to do, even though I felt better, was lie on the couch and read classic literature: Richie Rich, Casper the Friendly Ghost and Jughead and Archie.
“You’ve got to go outside and get some exercise,” my mother insisted one day. “The doctor said it will help you get better.”
“I don’t feel like it,” I complained. I sat on the couch reading a comic book with the dog lying patiently next to me.
“You could go outside with Boots,” suggested my mother.
Boots stood up, his tail waving at the sound of his name. He jumped off the couch and headed for the door. My mother let him out. “Are you sure you won’t join your dog?” she asked me.
I shook my head.
Later that evening, Boots did not return home at his usual time. After dinner, I called repeatedly for him, but he did not appear.
“It’s not like that dog to miss a meal,” said my mother. “You’d better go out and look for him.”

Ways to Relieve Stress
Stress is a common experience for teenagers, I’d like to share my helpful ways to relieve stress with all of you.
Firstly, whenever you confront difficulties and feel stressed, you should remain positive and put your best foot forward, which will not only lower your stress level but also sharpen your characters. Secondly, you can turn to your parents or teachers, who will help you choose the appropriate strategies to cope with your stress effectively. More importantly, working out with your classmates regularly also relieves you from stress, because sports will help you have a sound sleep at night. Following my suggestions above, you will find yourselves in a perfect state to face your challenges confidently and bravely.
One possible version:
For the first time in a long time, I headed out into the yard. I found Boots sitting in the back yard with his ball clamped in his mouth. He hurried to me when I spotted him, dropping his ball at my feet. I picked up the ball and threw it a few times for Boots. He chased it enthusiastically and brought it back to me. The next evening, the same thing happened again. We played for a while in the twilight and then headed back inside. This strange pattern continued day after day.
And without my really being aware of it, I became stronger and healthier. Once I was back to my old self, Boots changed his routine and began coming to dinner the moment he was called. “That’s weird,” I said. “Well, you weren’t listening to the doctor’s advice,” replied my mother. “So, apparently, Boots decided he’d give you a helping hand and encourage you to get some activity.” I was shocked! Is it true that Boots really knew what he was doing in helping with my recovery? Regardless, I’ll always be grateful that I had a dog for a nurse.

根据第一段中的“He took the job when the previous coach quit and transformed the team’s fortunes.(前任教练辞职后,他接受了这份工作,改变了球队的命运)”可知,詹姆斯·亨利是在当时球队遭遇长期失败,一片惨淡的情况下,接受了教练的职位。
根据第二段最后詹姆斯说的话“I insist on doing the basic stuff well and letting the girls decide what they feel they need to work on.(我坚持要基本的事情做好,让女孩们自己决定她们需要做什么)”可知,詹姆斯注重足球基本技能的训练,也不会为女孩们做决定。故选C项。
根据第四段中的“James watched the girls develop over the course of last year, and in September they played their first match of the new season. They won the game, and since then went on an unbeaten run of eight games.(詹姆斯看着女孩们在去年的比赛中成长,并在9月份参加了新赛季的第一场比赛。他们赢了这场比赛,此后连续八场不败)”可知,詹姆斯当教练之后,女孩们正式参加比赛就持续获得了胜利,这是球队在詹姆斯的带领下实现的成就。故选D项。
31.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段最后一句“All we want is to bring more girls into the game and show that it’s not all about having the best players; it’s about hard work and giving everyone the chance to play.
划线词句前文“Scientists have previously suspected that plants may be able to sense sound waves as they are struck by them. (科学家们此前曾怀疑,植物受到声波的冲击时,可能能够感知声波。)”说明植物可能会受到声波的影响,再根据划线词句后半部分“including the expression of stress-related genes, abnormal growth and reduced sprouting(发芽) of seeds (包括与胁迫相关的基因表达、异常生长和种子发芽减少)”可知,植物受到声波的影响是不好的。从而推知划线词句“A number of experiments have confirmed this in recent years——plants continuously affected by ultrasound(超声波) in the lab have shown a range of adverse responses (近年来,许多实验已经证实了这一点——在实验室中,连续受到超声影响的植物表现出一系列adverse反应)”其中划线词汇应为“不好的,不良的”的意思,选项C“消极的,负面的”与之意义最为接近。故选C项。
根据第五段中“The chemical compounds indicating stress in plants were found at much higher levels in the samples exposed to the traffic noise. (在暴露于交通噪音的样本中,植物中指示压力的化合物含量要高得多。)”可知,暴露在交通噪音中的植物含有更多与压力相关的化合物。故选C项。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The next question is whether all noise pollution affects all species in the same way. (下一个问题是,是否所有的噪音污染都以同样的方式影响所有物种。)”可知,研究的下一步可能是用其他植物进行试验。故选B项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第一段“It has always been assumed that traffic noise is a problem unique to animals. But a new study by Ghotbi-Ravandi, a botanist at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, has revealed that plants suffer too. (人们一直认为交通噪音是动物特有的问题。但是,德黑兰Shahid Beheshti大学的植物学家Ghotbi-Ravandi的一项新研究显示,植物也会受到影响。)”可知,本文介绍了一项研究,研究表明交通噪音对植物有不良的影响。选项D“植物受到交通的严重影响”符合文章主题,适合做标题。故选D项。
第四节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)
【答案】36.E 37.A 38.G 39.C 40.D
36.第一句“Colleges and universities in the US receive thousands of applications every year from within the US and from countries all around the world(美国的学院和大学每年都会收到来自美国国内和世界各国的数千份申请)”可知,美国的学院和大学每年都会收到来自美国国内和世界各国的数千份申请。 结合选项,E选项“But how can you make yours stand out from the pile?(但是如何才能让你的申请信从一堆申请信中脱颖而出呢?)”
破折号后的句子“the reality is that anything that the university presents as “optional” or “recommended” is usually seen as “required” in the minds of admission officers”提到:现实情况是,大学提出的任何“可选”或“推荐”的东西,在招生人员的心目中通常都被视为“必需”的东西。 结合选项,A选项“One might think of many parts of the application as optional.(人们可能把申请信中的很多部分看作是可选的)”符合语境。与空后“In fact, certain parts may even be presented that way in university application materials(实际上,在大学申请材料中,某些部分甚至是以那种方式被呈现出来)”中的that way呼应。故选A。
38.空前“in many cases, universities will accept all kinds of materials”提到,在很多情况下,大学接受各种各样的材料。 只有G选项“Extra materials won’t suddenly make you competitive.(额外的材料不会突然让你有竞争力)”提到material。
由该段内容“During school breaks, make sure that you are doing something that shows your academic curiosity, your initiative, and your willingness to work hard. Bonus points if your activity produces something that could be easily understood by admission offices, and if, this activity is something you’ve been doing for two or more years(在休息期间,确保你做一些能显示你的学术好奇心、你的主动性和你努力学习的意愿的事情。 如果你做的事情能够让招生办很容易理解,并且你已经做了两年或两年以上,那就加分了。)”可知,该段建议在休息期间,做一些能让你加分的事情。因此,C选项“Use your extra time wisely.(明智地利用你额外的时间)”符合语境。故选C。
40.由该段标题“Be eager and focus on quality communication(渴望并专注于高质量的沟通。)” 由下文“Answer emails without delay; send thank-you letters; and ask good and thoughtful questions(立即回复电子邮件;发送感谢信;提出好的和深思熟虑的问题)”可知,下文介绍了具体的沟通方式。由此可知,空处应该是引起下文,D选项“Communicating well will generally be to your benefit.(良好的沟通通常会给你带来好处)”符合语境,故选D。

Text 1
M: I’d rather have that fashionable car in red. (1)White paint needs too many washes.
W: I prefer that model in white and yellow.
M: How am I supposed to drive in the city in one of those? They look like flowers!
Text 2
W: Do you like my expensive-looking jacket? I just bought it yesterday. They are having a sale at Walmart. It ends tomorrow, though.
M: That would’ve been perfect. I need a new jacket because it’s already so cold, but I have to go to the office today. (2)
Text 3
M: I said you could get one piece of candy, not a whole pineapple.
W: Fruit is nature’s candy! You should try eating it instead.
M: We don’t have room in the cart for that. Put it back. (3)
Text 4
M: Is that dad’s car?
W: It can’t be him. He said he was going shopping with mom and then to see a film with our cousin John.(4)
M: It’s him! We’re going to be punished when they see this mess.
Text 5
W: Ralph already knows how to unlock his seatbelt and our ice box.
M: He’s a really smart one-year-old. Philip didn’t start any of that until at least three years old. That’s when I started losing my hair.
W: Philip’s 10th birthday will be next week! (5)
Text 6
W: According to the X-ray, this isn’t the first time you’ve broken your wrist.(6)
M: I fell down when I was skateboarding, but that was 10 years ago.
W: Well, this second break may have done permanent damage. We will not know until it is a little better. The nurse should be bringing in the rest of your test data so that I can give you some medicine.(7)
M: Do you think I’ll need a physical care provider?
W: It depends on the injury, but you shouldn’t avoid that just because it might hurt. If it means the difference between nerve damage and gaining the full use of your wrist back, you should see the physical care provider.
Text 7
W: Soon I’ll be working with great actors like Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman! Film makers from all around the world will fight over having me as the star.(8)
M: Don’t you have to go to school for that? Or at least have been in plays?
W: Traditional education is for people with no talent.
M: Have you signed up for any interviews yet? That’s the only way you’ll be able to get a job. I’ve heard those things can get pretty competitive. There are a lot of people who think just like you do.
W: I have an interview this coming week for a commercial.
M: If you want, I can call my uncle. He has been an actor for 30 years. He could teach you something.
W: I don’t need lessons! I need opportunities. Tell him to set up an interview for me instead!(9)
Text 8
W: I can’t believe this! I thought I was going to die back there! How dare you take me out to the woods? Let’s go back to the city. I need malls and roads!
M: It was only a snake, and it was like 30 meters away from us. Besides, we’re only out here for the weekend. How about getting back to the tent? I’ll make you some hot chocolate.
W: Is it Starbucks hot chocolate? You know I only drink brand name products. I can’t believe I let you trick me into this! I can’t even get a phone signal out here!
M: Is this your first time outside the city?
W: Of course not! I travel all around the world with my family, meeting friends. We go to beautiful places with beaches, not dirty trees and creatures! My father does business all around the world and he flies us around in his private plane.(10) I should be in Belize spending a vacation with my family right now!
M: This is much cheaper. I’m sorry you don’t like it, but maybe when the stars come out and we have a nice fire to sit around, you’ll appreciate it.(11、12)
Text 9
W: Have you heard about that illness everyone is worried about? (13)Apparently it is spreading through hospitals all over the country. The WHO is quite worried.
M: What is the WHO? Is that the show about the time-traveling doctor?
W: It is the World Health Organization. They are the ones who give certain rules for how to handle illnesses around the world, especially illness that can move around fast. (14)
M: What are the symptoms of the sickness? What does it do to people? What if we already have it or we are infected?
W: Relax! It is a disease that is easily affecting older people and very young children.(15) For them it can be dangerous, but for everyone else it just gives body aches and a fever. I think it goes away in a few days though. The problem is that the hospital is full of old people, babies and sick people! The WHO is working to protect everyone.
M: Wow! You have really made me sad for the day. I was going to the mall for Christmas presents, but instead I think I’ll just lie on the floor of my room and hug my dog.(16)
W: It’s easily preventable if you are careful and wash your hands though.
Text 10
W: Thank you, Ron. I’m Katie Gill here at the corner of Greenwood and Pine, where the heat of the flames can still be felt some 100 feet away.(17) The fire is said to have started inside the local bakery (18)and it has spread to the surrounding apartment buildings.
As we speak, fire fighters and police are helping those who could not make it outside without assistance. Though many seem to be safe, there is not much relief left to the residents of Battery Park. They stand here helpless to stop the fire. According to the fire department, the fire began early last night after the bakery closed.(19) There seems to be a problem with the water system in the area and it is stopping the fire prevention system from turning on. Many have come from local areas with food and water to help. They were happy to lend a hand during such a terrible time.
As far as we know, no one has been injured yet by the fire because most people have known to leave the building hours ago, but as these lucky people stand outside of their burning homes, they do not feel so blessed. This will be an August these Battery Park residents will not forget any time.(20) Now back to you in the studio.(17)
