The wildfires damaging parts of Australia can be seen from space in new satellite images released by NASA. Australia's capital, Canberra, was enveloped in a smoky haze and the air quality at midday was measured 10 times the usual dangerous limit. The damaging fires have killed at least 24 people in Australia and destroyed almost 2, 000 homes. The early start of Australia's summer wildfires, fed by drought and the country's hottest and driest year on record, has also been catastrophic (灾难性的) for the country's wildlife, likely killing nearly 500 million birds, reptiles and mammals in New South Wales alone, Sydney University ecologist Chris Dickman told The Sydney Morning Herald.
Under such extreme conditions, the fires have been generating enough heat to create their own weather systems, including fire-generated thunderstorms and fire tornadoes. Thousands of firefighters continued to fight against the flames that have burnt millions of acres in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, an area twice the size of Maryland. In New South Wales, the Rural Fire Service said as of Sunday there were 150 fires active in the state, and 64 of them uncontrolled.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that, for the first time in Australian history, 3, 000 army, navy and air force reservists (预备役军人) will battle against the fires. He also committed $14 million to hiring fire-fighting aircraft from overseas. On Sunday, cooler temperatures and lighter winds brought some relief to threatened communities, but a day after thousands of people were forced to escape as flames reached the suburban areas of Sydney. Thousands of firefighters fought to contain the fires, but many fires continued to burn out of control, threatening to wipe out rural townships and causing almost incalculable damage to property and wildlife.

This photograph taken and released on Sep. 28, 2018 by Indonesia's National Agency for Disaster Management shows a house destroyed by a 7.5 magnitude(级) earthquake in the small town Donggala on Sulawesi Island. The quake brought down many buildings while tsunami waves hit into its beachfront. "All the things in my house were shaking and it left a small crack on my wall. Anyway, I survived!" one of the local people Mohammad Fikri said by telephone.
But the biggest killer was probably soil liquefaction(土壤液化), which occurs when a powerful quake turns the dry ground into liquid mire (泥沼) and this totally destroyed several neighborhoods.
The official death reports rose to 1,948, and most of them were in Palu, the center of the Sulawesi Island. Bodies are still being dug out and the numbers from less populated areas are increasing but they seem to have suffered fewer deaths than the city. "No one knows how many people are missing, especially in the areas hit by liquefaction, but it could be as high as 5, 000," the National Disaster Agency said.Ziyuanku.com
At a Palu middle school, fewer than 50 of its 697 students came. The school principal Abdul Rashid said at least four students were killed in the quake. "Classes haven't started. We're only collecting data to find out how many students are safe," he said. One boy chatting in the school with friends said he was disappointed that so few of his classmates had shown up. "I'm still waiting for the Ministry of Education to give us instructions on when to begin classes. For now, I don't think we're ready. Many children are so scared that they need time to calm down."
The government has collected $ 37 million to help victims of the earthquake. With the efforts of rescue workers and volunteers, the supply of gas and electricity has been recovered. Ruins would be cleared and areas hit by liquefaction would be turned into parks, gymnasiums and other public spaces, a spokesman said.

Surviving Hurricane Sandy (飓风桑迪)
Natalie Doan, 14,has always felt lucky to live in Rockaway, New York. Living just a few blocks from the beach, Natalie can see the ocean and hear the waves from her house. "It's the ocean that makes Rockaway so special," she says.
On October 29, 2012, that ocean turned fierce. That night, Hurricane Sandy attacked the East Coast, and Rockaway was hit especially hard. Fortunately, Natalie's family escaped to Brooklyn shortly before the city's bridges closed.
When they returned to Rockaway the next day, they found their neighborhood in ruins. Many of Natalie's friends had lost their homes and were living far away. All around her, people were suffering, especially the elderly. Natalie's school was so damaged that she had to temporarily attend a school in Brooklyn.

Last April, she was invited to the White House and honored as a Hurricane Sandy Champion of Change.
Today, the scars(创痕) of destruction are still seen in Rockaway, but hope is in the air. The streets are clear, and many homes have been rebuilt. "I can't imagine living anywhere but Rockaway," Natalie declares. "My neighborhood will be back, even stronger than before."

第二节 (满分25分)ziyuanku.com
On the tenth anniversary of my father's death, I awoke to loud fire alarms at 3: 30 a.m. Alexis, my older daughter, was standing in the hallway with her cellphone and a blanket wrapped around her younger sister, Sierra. We ran down the stairs to the main floor. The girls stood by the front door while I checked for the cause of the alarms. When I opened the door to my living room, I could see the carpets were smoking heavily. My house was really on fire.
I shouted to the girls, "Get out! The house is on fire!" They turned and ran out the front door, followed by me. Then we ran through the woods to our neighbor's house. I knocked on my neighbor's front door as police cars passed by.
Later, I was told that it took the firemen a long time to put out the fire. Standing outside my burned house the next day, I got caught up in lots of questions. I had no cash or bank cards. How was I going to pay for anything? Where would we live? What would happen to my house now? I didn't even know where to start. Luckily, our community helped us a lot.
The fire burned almost everything, but I still decided to visit our burned house to search through the ruins. It's interesting how you learn what really matters to you in those conditions. I found myself primarily searching for my father's watch. I also found other treasures as I searched for his watch, including the ring my mom gave me when I left for college, a watch my grandmother gave me for high school graduation, and my daughter's unworn dress, which was ruined. I found the last shirt my father had worn before his hospital stay. We had taken a trip after his second course of chemo(化疗). It was the last vacation we had taken before his death. At that moment, I felt differently about the fire.
Paragraph 1:
I realized the fire gave us wore than it took away. ___________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
My dad's watch is on my bedside table now, which is a reminder that anyone or anything can be lost without warning. _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

答案:living; it; which; to see; Visitors; in; celebration; have grown; bigger; Official
此处用it指代前面的 the cold。
分析句子结构可知,空处引导一个非限制性定语从句,指代先行词"the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival",并在从句中作主语,故应用关系代词which。
短话 take part in意为"参加"。
How to Survive in an Earthquake
Earthquakes have happened in many places recently, causing significant damage. So how to keep safe during an earthquake has become an important issue. Here are some guidelines.
Above all, don't be nervous and try to keep calm. If you are outdoors, it's necessary to find an open area away from trees, buildings, power lines and anything else that might fall on you. If you are indoors, move to a safe place such as under a strong desk. Cover your head and neck with your arms to protect yourself from falling objects. Finally, never use the lift.
Actually, we can reduce the damage earthquakes bring us if we take right measures.
第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
I realized the fire gave us more than it took away. One of the greatest gifts we received was the kindness and care from our community. Some people dropped by with food, clothing and money. Others came by to help us search for treasures through the ruins. Another greatest gift we received was that nothing matters more than family. The fire did bum away lots of our personal items, but we saved the most valuable.
Paragraph 2:
My dad's watch is on my bedside table now, which is a reminder that anyone or anything can be lost without warning. I begin learning to treasure everything and teach Alexis and Sierra to do the same as me. At the same time, my girls and I keep watching for those who are in trouble. It is important for us to pay back the kindness we received. We will be grateful forever.
