Step 5 Language points
1. We got separated when we went to different schools last term, but we stayed in touch.
get separated 表示“分开,分隔”。
Separate既可作动词,又可作形容词。
●作动词意为“分开”,常用短语:separate ... from ...。

explain v. 解释;说明
explain sth. to sb. 向某人解释某事
3. Could I ask if you’ve mentioned this to her?
mention sth. to sb. 意为“向某人说起某事”。
4. But she refused to listen.
refuse作动词,意为“拒绝”,可用作不及物动词,也可用作及物动词。用作及物动词时,后面常跟名词、代词或动词不定式作宾语。

5. Try to find out whether she feels lonely without you.
lonely作形容词,意为“孤独的;寂寞的”,既可作表语也可作定语。
6. I’m sure she regrets hurting you.
regret作动词时,意为“感到遗憾,惋惜,懊悔”,后可接名词、代词、动词不定式、动词-ing形式或从句作宾语。
注意:regret to do sth. 意为“遗憾要做某事”,表示动作尚未发生;regret doing sth. 意为“后悔做了某事”,表示动作已经发生。
★regret作名词时,意为“懊悔,遗憾”。
7. So be patient with her and explain to her that she can make friends with your other friends too.
be patient with 表示“对……有耐心”。
make friends with sb. 意为“与某人交朋友”
8. Try to introduce her to them.
introduce … to sb. 表示“向某人介绍…”。
9. I’ll encourage her to join in more.
encourage sb. to do sth. 表示“鼓励某人去做某事”。
Step 6 Grammar
whether/if引导的宾语从句
如果我们要表达像“他不知道他们周六是否会去植树”或“我记不清以前是否见过他”这样的不确定的概念时,从句就要用whether或if来引导,不能用that。
e.g.
He does not know whether they will plant trees on Saturday or not.
He asks whether/if we will go fishing on Sunday.
Tom wants to know whether/if he needs to come early tomorrow.
注意:if与whether引导宾语从句时都有“是否”的意思,一般情况下可以互换。但是在动词不定式之前、介词之后或者句尾有or not出现时,一般只能用whether。
e.g. We haven’t decided whether to go or not.
The old woman asked me whether/if I knew the way to the bank.
