Children used to be able to play freely, exploring and interacting with the natural world with little or no supervision(监督) by adults. They were free to invent games of their own. Nowadays, however, we control the lives of our children much more, giving them fewer chances for free play. Many children in England used to spend hours playing on their bikes, having all sorts of adventures, but this is now considered too dangerous. Some working families can’t care for their children after school, so the children have to stay indoors or attend supervised after-school activities.
The result is that some children have little time for play any more and when they do it’s often spent in front of the television or computer. In the past, children in Brazil played a game which involves spinning (旋转) a large seed with a hole in it to create a scream-like noise. They rarely play this game nowadays.
Studies show that outdoor environments help all people by reducing stress and creating a general feeling of well-being. When children play in the open air, they are more likely to have positive feelings about each other.
Outdoor environments are also important for children’s development of independence. When playing outside, children can gradually increase the distance from adults. Adults are then more willing to trust their children, an important element in confidence-building which improves the relationship between child and parents.
Outdoors, children have more chances to use all their senses. They have greater freedom not only to run and shout, but also to interact with the environment. Activities which may not be allowed indoors are perfectly acceptable outdoors; children are free to play messy games out in the open air that just wouldn’t be permitted in the home.
Children experience the natural environment differently from adults. Adults typically see nature as background to what they are doing, while for children it is a hands-on experience. The expensive toys and indoor educational games cannot substitute for the experience of direct interaction with nature. They cannot replace the sensation where a child’s attention is suddenly caught by the sunlight through leaves or the gentle noise of water flowing by.
    28. The author mentions a Brazilian game to show that _______.
    A. it was common for children to invent games in the past
    B. TV and computer are more popular than outdoor games
    C. Brazilian children used to play outdoor games
    D. children seldom play outdoors nowadays
In the past, children in Brazil played a game which involves spinning a large seed with a hole in it to create a scream-like noise. They rarely play this game nowadays.
    29. How do adults react when their children become more independent?
    A. They don’t control the lives of their children anymore.
    B. They have more confidence in their children.
    C. They want their children to stay indoors.
    D. They experience less stress.
Adults are then more willing to trust their children, an important element in confidence-building which improves the relationship between child and parents.

    31. The author’s purpose in writing the text is to _______.
    A. introduce some outdoor games
    B. present a study on outdoor play
    C. encourage people to interact more with nature
    D. advise parents to let children play outdoors more

One summer day as I was heading to the teaching building I heard someone call my name. I turned around and saw Philip, a counselor (顾问) at our admissions office (招生办公室), standing with another young man. Philip introduced me to him, Stephen, and reminded me that Stephen would be taking one of my classes.
Stephen looked at me. With a somewhat painful expression, he asked if my class was going to be hard and if he would be able to pass. I introduced all the things that he would be expected to learn. As we talked, I saw Stephen’s eyes getting big with fear.
I told him to do all of his assignments, and to hand them in on time. Rather than being overwhelmed (压倒) by all of the work, I told him the most successful students made a master calendar of all the assignments so they could plan their workload.
As the fall semester went on, I learned more of Stephen’s story. It had taken him longer to finish the assignments than most young people. Family members, including his mother, kept reminding him that he was a failure. But he kept at it and didn’t take them to heart. He told me that before coming to our college, no one believed he could manage it.
Stephen didn’t become an A student. Still, he managed to pass all of his courses by being in class every day, turning in all of his assignments on time and breaking down his studying into bite-sized parts. By passing course after course he began to gain a measure of self-esteem. On his graduation day, he walked up to me, and said, “Thank you. ”

【解析】选A。 根据第二段第二句“With a somewhat painful expression, he asked if my class was going to be hard and if he would be able to pass. ”即可判断出Stephen不自信。
    33. According to the passage, the author _______.
    A. wouldn’t have met Stephen without the introduction of Philip
    B. told Stephen how to deal with his studies
    C. helped Stephen get an A in his class
    D. didn’t believe that Stephen could study in college

I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I never traveled. Travelling has given me tons of great lessons that I’ll never forget.
      Appreciating another culture
Learning about another culture in school is one thing, but actually experiencing it is another. 36 You can visit art museums, watch landmarks, or just stop at a café. Before you know it, you’ll pick up on local customs or fall in love with unfamiliar foods.
The pleasure of unplugging from social media
Social media takes up a lot of our time and it’s really distracting and even damaging. So for me, when I travel I love the fact that I’m often cut off from any Internet. I stop caring about what others are doing and instead focus on having fun.
     37
      Exploring your capability(能力)
38 It brings the best out of you. As a shy person. I feel a sense of pride when I make friends with complete strangers or talk in broken foreign languages. Travelling has truly changed me in the best way. Now, whatever happens, I’m capable of meeting the challenge!
      Patience
I have never taken a vacation where nothing goes wrong. I ever lost my luggage, got hopelessly confused with directions, and waited 5 hours on a train that broke down mid journey. 39 Unexpected things can happen at any moment. The accidents encountered during travel teach you to be more patient with your everyday problems.
The world isn’t as scary as you think

Once there was a little girl named Emily. Although her singing was very pleasant to hear, lacking of courage, she never dared to sing in front of strangers.
One summer, the neighborhood where she lived would hold a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, “I’m afraid to take part in it. ” Her mother said, “It’s okay, just do it bravely. ” Emily followed her mom’s advice and decided to give herself a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid(胆小的) to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily (颤抖地) forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What’s worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics (歌词) after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.
Some naughty boys ran after her and said, “Emily, coward (胆小鬼)! Emily, coward! ” Emily didn’t argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mom and cried sadly.
“Well, my poor girl. Don’t cry. Tell me what happened to you. ” asked her mom. Emily looked up her mother and told her what she had experienced.
Listening to her, her mom cupped her face and said, “It doesn’t matter, girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don’t be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you. ”

A grandma smiled to her and said, “Oh, little girl , you sing really well! ” Emily said thanks to her. Emily felt pleased that she could sing confidently in front of strangers. The second year, the neighborhood held the singing competition again. This time, Emily walked onto the stage bravely, and her loud and beautiful voice of singing moved all the people.
