Everyday wear like casual shirts, T-shirts, and jackets, embroidered (刺绣) with traditional patterns from the Yi ethnic group, staged a striking show at recent New York Fashion Week, which took place on September 4th. Chinese designer Wang Ta’s new youth collection, decorated with Yi embroidery, a Chinese intangible (无形的) cultural heritage, was a definite hit on the last night of the fashion week.
The audience was amazed by both the beautiful and mostly hand-embroidered colorful patterns and the perfect balance of modern and traditional elements. Leah Coulter, a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, who dressed the models for the show, said the collection was a mix of old and new and loved all the patterns and embroidery, which aroused her interest in the unique handicraft dating back thousands of years. “I need to learn more about its history, " Coulter said.
It’s not something new in the fashion world to involve China’s intangible cultural heritages as elements of design, Wang said, but it’s not easy to make them into true fashion. Intangible cultural heritages should not always be displayed in museums or only appear on souvenirs. I hope to break the stereotype through using the Yi embroidery and make them everyday, fashionable items, " Wang told the media after the show. "I think fashion is the best way to introduce culture. "
Wang’s design ideas can be traced back to both her global experience as a fashion designer in Japan, the UK and China, and her unique educational background. Before receiving her second degree in fashion from Japan’s top fashion institute Tokyo Mode Gakuen, she majored in history at ECNU(East China Normal University)in Shanghai. In order to create her collection, Wang and her team went to Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture (自治州) in southwest China’s Yunnan Province and deeply studied the culture and history of Yi’s craftsmanship to gain insight into the essence, delicacy and symbolism of Yi embroidery. But Wang’s employing the patterns, colors and techniques of Yi embroidery in her contemporary fashion designs is not a simple imitation. The combination of modern and traditional parts can’t be too striking for it to be widely accepted as everyday wear, Wang said, adding that her goal is for people, regardless of gender, color or nationality, to like her designs.
    28. What made Wang Ta’s design appealing to the audience?
    A. The totally hand-embroidered costumes in Yi culture.
    B. The brilliant combination of traditional and modern parts.
    C. The remarkable design of Chinese intangible cultural heritage.
    D. The diversity of ethnic cultures displayed in the youth clothes.
    29. What does the underlined word “stereotype” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Unique style. B. Commercial trend.
    C. Fixed impression. D. Controversial type.
    30. Which of the following contributes to Wang’s design ideas?
    A. Her aspiration to be famous worldwide.
    B. Her fashion educational background at ECNU.
    C. Her working experiences in some European and Asian countries.
    D. Her travelling experiences across ethnic regions in Yunnan Province.
    31. What is the text mainly about?
    A. A culture back to life.
    B. China’s intangible cultural heritage.
    C A China’s talented designer.
    D. The application of China’s ethnic elements in fashion.
B 29. C 30. C 31. D
根据第二段“The audience was amazed by both the beautiful and mostly hand-embroidered colorful patterns and the perfect balance of modern and traditional elements. ”( 观众们惊叹于美丽且大多是手工刺绣的彩色图案,以及现代与传统元素的完美平衡。)可知观众为传统与现代元素的完美结合而惊叹。故选B项。
    【29题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段划线词上文“Intangible cultural heritages should not always be displayed in museums or only appear on souvenirs.”(非物质文化遗产不应该总是陈列在博物馆里,也不应该仅仅出现在纪念品上。) 可推测“I hope to break the stereotype through using the Yi embroidery and make them everyday, fashionable items, " Wang told the media after the show. "意为“我希望通过使用彝族刺绣打破这种刻板印象,让它们成为日常时尚的商品,”王晓红在展会结束后对媒体表示”由此可知,break the stereotype中的“stereotype”应该是“fixed impression”的含义。fixed impression刻板印象,符合题意。故选C项。
    【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Wang’s design ideas can be traced back to both her global experience as a fashion designer in Japan, the UK and China”( 王的设计理念可以追溯到她在日本、英国和中国担任时装设计师的全球经历)可知,她在欧洲和亚洲一些国家的工作经历有助于她的设计理念。
根据第一段“Everyday wear like casual shirts, T-shirts, and jackets, embroidered (刺绣) with traditional patterns from the Yi ethnic group, staged a striking show at recent New York Fashion Week, which took place on September 4th. Chinese designer Wang Ta’s new youth collection, decorated with Yi embroidery, a Chinese intangible (无形的) cultural heritage, was a definite hit on the last night of the fashion week.

College debt is becoming as much of a problem for Americans close to retirement as it is for new graduates. There are now about 8. 7 million Americans aged over 50 who are still paying off college loans. They borrowed the money either to pay for an education for their children or themselves. Their debt is growing fast, increasing by about half since 2017 to a total of $ 370 billion — an average of $ 40, 900 per borrower. In 2019, roughly $4.9 billion was deducted (扣除) right from retirees’ Social Security income.
"Part of the blame falls on the federally backed PLUS program,” said Tara Siegel Bernard in The New York Times. "Parent PLUS loans”, which have few application requirements other than a basic credit check, have broadened access to capital for many parents. But the “loans can be unforgiving”. William and Kate Schweizer “didn’t want their two daughters to begin their adult lives burdened with college debt”. So they borrowed $ 220, 000 for their schooling. Increasingly they had trouble paying. Now their debt has ballooned to $500, 000. The consequences of defaulting (拖欠) are serious: “The government can take their wages and Social Security.”
“Unfortunately, President Biden’s $ 6 trillion budget doesn’t offer much assistance,” said Eric Levitz in NYMag.com. “During his campaign, Biden called for forgiving $ 10, 000 in federal student loan debt for every borrower among other ways to ease the college debt burden. But the chances of passing such measures through Congress are slim.”
“Don’t bankrupt yourself for your kids,” said Beth Akers in USA Today. The safer option to pay for college is “a student loan taken out in your child’s name”. A federal student loan — not a private one — can protect borrowers through income-driven repayment programs. There is also a better chance that a loan forgiveness program could materialize to help out student borrowers. And remember that “if you overextend yourself financially to make a college dream come true for your child, you are taking away your ability to be your child’s financial backstop.”

根据上文“We all know about the health benefits of swimming, including building endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular(心血管的)fitness.”(我们都知道游泳对健康的好处,包括锻炼耐力、肌肉力量和心血管健康。)和下文“Many people feel that swimming is very exciting and relaxing.”(很多人觉得游泳很刺激,很放松。)
根据上文“Jumping in cold water gives a short sharp shock to the body.”(跳入冷水中会对身体造成短的剧烈冲击。)和下文“A cold dip might wake you up, but research has found it can have much bigger benefits than those for your body and mind”(跳入冷水可能会让你清醒,但研究发现,冷水游泳对你的身心有更大的好处。)
根据下文“One man who suffered constant pain after surgery claimed he was cured by taking a swim in cold open water. And another swimmer, Sandria Simons, told the BBC “the immersion of your body in cold, salt water, just feeling like you’re at one with nature if you like, just feels amazing”.”(一名在手术后饱受疼痛折磨的男子声称,他在冰冷的公开水域游泳后就痊愈了。
根据设空处上文中的“Doctors say getting into cold water makes a stress response, but the more you do it, your reaction to stress is reduced.”(医生说进入冷水会产生压力反应,但是你做得越多,你对压力的反应就会减少。)以及下文中的“In addition,cold-water swimming can exercise swimmers' willpower. ”(此外,冷水游泳可以锻炼游泳者的意志力。)可知,设空处应是继续介绍冷水游泳的其他好处,D项“它也被认为能够增强我们的消化功能。”切题。故选D项。
    【40题详解】
根据上文“Some experts believe cold-water swimming helps “cross-adaptation”, where one form of stress prepares the body for another.”(一些专家认为冷水游泳有利于交叉适应,即一种压力使身体为另一种压力做好准备。)

The dawn had yet not broken, but the chirping and twittering of birds was telling the early risers that it was about to. Two squirrels wrestled over a nut on the narrow lane, with overgrown grasses on both sides. These squirrels were to be the first to be photographed that day and…click! A tender-looking boy examined the taken picture closely. ’Good enough’ he thought and then shared the picture excitedly.
The boy is Vinay. He is seventeen. One morning on his usual stroll down the lane, his phone vibrated(振动). He checked it to find some beautiful pictures of flowers and sunrise and little animals. The pictures were of course wrongly sent but it paved the way for a special friendship between Vinay and Vani. They didn’t know where the other lived. They would share with each other the photographs of the most beautiful things they came across during their morning walk. They would occasionally share each other’s photograph but made it sure that it revealed nothing about their residence. Vani was twenty-five. It wasn’t that they didn’t want to meet…it was just that they wanted to make it as special as their unique relation was…
A short sweet tune on her smartphone told Vani that Vinay had found something interesting because that early in the morning it could be no one else but him. She swiped to unlock, and then tapped on the picture Vinay had shared. She smiled broadly at sight of two squirrels wrestling. She then texted back, “Today I’ve chosen a new place to go for a walk. ” "I’ll send you pictures as soon as I find something interesting. ”
There were two message alerts on Vinay’s phone. He checked the messages. Then he typed, “I’ll wait. ”A drop of dew(露水)fell on Vinay’s head. He stepped aside and looked up. The dew drops settling on the vibrantly green leaves caught his eyes. He clicked a picture in no time and shared it with Vani. He added a caption. It read—’For You’.

Vani still couldn’t find something interesting to share with Vinay. Suddenly, her phone sang twice in short sweet tunes. She read Vinay’s message. Then she tapped on the picture. She was fascinated by the beauty of the dew droplets still on the leaves and then she read the added caption, ’For You’. She smiled mildly on the outside but in her heart she had never felt this desperation to meet someone...and this scared her. She didn’t know what to write. She texted him back, “But I couldn’t find anything interesting yet. " as if nothing happened.
Now Vinay would turn to his way back home like every day. Vinay read Vani’s message. He thought for a while and then texted. “I’m on my way home. Find something beautiful before I reach. " Vani texted back. Sure, I’ll. ” A message alert tune sounded but it wasn’t on Vani’s phone! She looked straight. There he was. He looked straight. There she was. Neither of them knew what to say. They just looked at each other and smiled. Vani clicked a picture of Vinay and sent it to him. Vinay tapped it open. It was his picture which Vani had just clicked with the caption—Look, I found something beautiful even before you reach home.
