An 85-year-old primary school constructed in 1935 in Shanghai has been lifted off the ground in its entirety and relocated using new technology called the “walking machine”. The project marks the first time this “walking machine” method has been used in Shanghai to relocate a historical building.
Urbanization(都市化)has continued to significantly threaten architectural heritage. In the capital Beijing, for instance, more than 1,000 acres of its historic hutongs and traditional courtyard homes were destroyed between 1990 and 2010.
In the early 2000s, cities including Nanjing and Beijing—due to the critics’ protest against the loss of old neighborhoods—drew up long-term plans to preserve what was left of their historic sites, with protections introduced to safeguard buildings and restrict developers.
These conservation efforts have taken different forms. In Beijing, a near-ruined temple was transformed into a restaurant and gallery, while in Nanjing, a cinema from the 1930s was restored to its original form, with some additions provided for it for modern use. In 2019, Shanghai welcomed Tank Shanghai, an arts center built in renovated(翻新的)oil tanks.
“Relocation is not the first choice, but better than destruction,” said Lan, the Shanghai primary school’s project supervisor. “I’d rather not touch the historical buildings at all.” “Building relocation,” he said, however, “is a workable option.” “The central government is putting more emphasis on the protection of historical buildings. I’m happy to see that progress in recent years.”
Shanghai has arguably been China’s most progressive city when it comes to heritage preservation. The survival of a number of 1930s buildings and 19th-century “shikumen” (or “stone gate”) houses has offered examples of how to give old buildings new life.
“We have to preserve the historical buildings no matter what happens,” Lan said. “The relocation is a challenge, but in general, it is cheaper than destroying and then rebuilding something in a new location.”
4.How did cities respond to the loss of historical sites?
A.They criticized the developers.
B.They rebuilt the historic hutongs.
C.They ended the significant threat.
D.They proposed the protection project.
5.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.An original form.
B.A new addition.
C.A cinema.
D.A temple.
6.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 6?
A.Provide strong evidence.
B.Introduce different opinions.
C.Summarize previous paragraphs.
D.Add some background information.
7.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Walking Machine: a New Technology
B.Rebuilding: a New Option for Relics
C.Old Building Torn Down for Modern Use
D.Historical Site “Walks” to New Life

根据Rijksmuseum Gardens部分第一句中的“which are dotted with fascinating artworks(那里遍布着迷人的艺术作品)”可知,如果你对艺术作品感兴趣,你会偏爱Rijksmuseum Gardens。
根据The Muziektheater部分第一句和第二句中的“the concert is followed by a free tour of the theatre(音乐会之后会有免费的剧院之旅)”可知,在你参观the Muziektheater之前,你可以参加每周一次免费的午餐时间的音乐会。A、C、D项中描述的活动均与“参观the Muziektheater”无关。
根据The Central Library部分第一句中的“At the Netherlands’ biggest library, the Centrale Bibliotheek, you can read the international papers for free(在荷兰最大的图书馆——中央图书馆,你可以免费阅读国际报纸)”可知,在中央图书馆国外报纸都可以免费阅读。由该部分中的“while Wi-Fi isn’t completely free”可知,里面的Wi-Fi不是免费的,故A项不正确;由“Upstairs on the 7th floor there is a café with a balcony that boasts wonderful city views.”
3.fascinating adj.
7.prior to...
At the Netherlands’ biggest library, the Centrale Bibliotheek, you can read the international papers for free, and while Wi-Fi isn’t completely free, you can purchase 30 minutes for little more than a dollar by using one of the ticket machines.
第二个分句中while Wi-Fi isn’t completely free是while引导的让步状语从句,by using one of the ticket machines是介词短语作方式状语。
根据第四段第二句中的a cinema from the 1930s was restored to its original form(20世纪30年代的一座电影院被恢复到原来的样子)可知,代词it是指电影院。
The survival of a number of 1930s buildings and 19th-century “shikumen” (or “stone gate”) houses has offered examples of how to give old buildings new life. 故选A。
3.transform vt.使改变 4.restore vt.恢复 5.option n.选择
6.when it comes to...
In the early 2000s, cities including Nanjing and Beijing—due to the critics’ protest against the loss of old neighborhoods—drew up long-term plans to preserve what was left of their historic sites, with protections introduced to safeguard buildings and restrict developers.
两个破折号中间是due to引出的原因状语;what引导的是宾语从句;with protections introduced为with的复合结构;to safeguard buildings and restrict developers为目的状语。
故填as。
故填what。
be expected to do表示“预计做”,事情发生在过去,结合上文的came可知用一般过去时,主语是images,谓语动词用复数,故填were expected。

故选A。
