It hurts t keep secrets. Keeping smething secret is assciated with (与…联系)lwer well-being (安乐), wrse health, and less satisfying relatinships. New research, hwever, suggests that the harm f secrets desn’t really cme frm the hiding after all. The real prblem with keeping a secret is nt that yu have t hide it, but that yu have t live with it, and think abut it.
The cncept f secrecy might evke (唤起) a picture f tw peple in cnversatin, with ne persn actively hiding frm the ther. Yet, such hiding is actually uncmmn. It is ur tendency (倾向) t mind-wander (走神) t ur secrets that seems mst harmful t well-being. Simply thinking abut a secret can make us feel unreal. Having a secret return t mind, time and time again, can be tiring. When we think f a secret, it can make us feel alne.
T better understand the harms f secrecy, my wrkmates and I first set ut t understand what secrets peple keep, and hw ften they keep them. They fund that 97% f peple have at least ne secret at any given mment, and peple have, n average, 13 secrets.
Acrss several studies, we asked participants (参与者) t find ut hw ften they hid their secret during cnversatins with thers, and hw ften they thught abut the secret utside f scial cmmunicatins. They fund that the mre frequently peple simply thught abut their secrets, the lwer their well-being.
Fllwing up this research, a new paper shws why thinking abut secrets is s harmful. Turning the questin arund, we fund that when a persn tells a secret t a third party, it des nt reduce hw ften they have t hide the secret frm thers. Rather, it reduces hw ften their mind wanders tward the secret in unrelated (无关的) mments.
Therefre, if yu chse t still keep smething secret, talking t anther persn can make the wrld f difference. Secrets dn’t have t hurt as much as they d.

It was a week befre I saw Captain Nem again. Every mrning, I nticed fresh air cming int the rms and I knew that the Nautilus had surfaced. I wuld g ut and see the sunrise.
