“Welcome to China!”
This simple greeting from volunteer Sun Zeyu warmed the heart of US snowboarder Tessa Maud at the Olympics opening ceremony(开幕式). “That guy who has said ‘Welcome to China’ literally just makes me tear up every time because they [volunteers] are so nice. We feel so welcomed,” said Maud in the video she shared on TikTok.
Sun, a junior student from Tsinghua University, is an example of how Generation Z (people born between 1995 and 2010) promoted (促进) cultural and people-to-people exchanges at the Beijing Winter Games. Active and open-minded, they bridge gaps in their own ways. Their pleasant personalities, global vision and new-age thinking made the Games even more fantastic.
① Gen Z athletes shared their China travels on social media(媒体). Some became big fans of Chinese food. Maud shared what she ate every day on TikTok——fried rice, Kung Pao chicken and Peking duck. What to eat each day was a hard choice for her. “Everything is so good,” she said.
② Jenise Spiteri is a snowboarder from Malta. She became known as the “red bean bun girl” in China after she took a big bite while waiting for her score. “Goodbye to the amazing workers who supplied our food every day,” she wrote on social media when she left the Olympic Village. In the picture, she holds a big red bean bun.
③ Alexandra Pozhidaeva is a Russian international student from Peking University. As a performer(表演者) at the opening ceremony, she had a heart-warming moment with the young people of her age. When the stadium was very cold, they lent their gloves. She said it was touching as they didn’t know each other.

①A sister and a brother are walking in the woods. She hears a bird singing and sees raspberries (山莓) on long thorny stems. She avoids the thorns while picking one. It feels hard. She throws it into her mouth and says it tastes sweet. Her brother hears a whisper in the bushes and sees a snake slither out, so he moves away.
②Our bodies have sense organs (器官) that collect outside information. Our brains use this information to decide how we should react (反应). The five basic senses are sight, smell, taste, hearing and touch.
③Our eyes are sight organs. The dark center of the eye is the pupil (瞳孔). In bright light, the pupil grows smaller so that less light can get in. In the dark, the pupil grows bigger to let in more light. Behind the pupil is the lens (透镜), which bends the light and focuses it on the retina (视网膜). There, special cells (细胞) send the image to the brain.
④Odors (气味) come from tiny particles (颗粒) that travel through the air, Nerve (神经) endings in our noses sense these particles, and the olfactory (嗅觉的) nerves send the information to the brain. This is how we smell a plate of freshly baked cookies.
⑤We taste things with our tongues (舌头). Our tongues have special groups of cells called taste buds (味酱). The front of the tongue tastes sweet things, and the sides taste salty and sour things. The back of the tongue tastes bitter things. Our taste buds need saliva (唾液) to work. The more we chew and mix saliva with the food, the better we taste it.
⑥Our ears are shaped like cups to pick up sound waves (波). Inside the ear, a canal (管道) directs the sound to the eardrum (耳膜). The sound waves vibrate the eardrum. Three small bones behind the eardrum pass the vibrations on to the inner ear. There, they are picked by the auditory, or hearing nerve and carried to the brain.
⑦We use our sense of touch to feel our surroundings. Nerve endings in the skin send signals to the brain. We can feel temperature, roughness and wetness. We can feel different shapes and we can feel pain.
⑧Besides the five basic senses, there are as many as fifteen other senses. We have sense organs deep inside our bodies that sense things such as our weight and body position. We have a sense of balance. We sense when we are hungry, thirsty or tired.

It was eleven o’clock at night. A large woman was walking towards home. She had a large purse with everything but money. It hung right behind her shoulder. A boy ran up and tried to snatch her purse. The large woman simply turned around, caught the boy by his shirt, and shook him until his teeth rattled.
After that, the woman asked, “Boy, don’t you feel ashamed of yourself?”
“I’m sorry,” whispered the boy.
“What did you want to do it for? Your face is dirty. Nobody at home told you to wash your face?”
The boy shook his head.
“Then,” the woman shouted, “it will get washed this evening. You are going to remember Mrs. Jones!” She dragged the frightened boy behind her and got to her door.
“Are you taking me to the police?” The boy asked.
‘‘Not with that face! Have you been home to eat yet?”
“There’s nobody at my house.”
“Then we’ll eat,” said Mrs. Jones. “I believe you’re hungry, so you tried to steal.”
“I wanted a pair of leather shoes,” said the boy.
“Well, you didn’t have to snatch my purse to get things you want. Besides, there’s little money in it.”
There was a long silence. After he washed his face and turned around, wondering what to do next, he saw the door open. He could run, run, run and run!
In the corner of the room, Mrs. Jones was heating some beans. She didn’t watch the boy to see if he was going to run, nor did she watch her purse which she left behind on the bed. But the boy took care to sit on the far side of the room, away from the purse, where he thought she could easily see him.
“Do you need somebody to get milk or something?” The boy asked.
“I don’t unless you want,” said Mrs. Jones.
As they ate, she didn’t ask about where he lived, or his family, or anything that would embarrass him. Instead, she said, “eat some more, boy!”
When they finished eating, she got up. ‘‘Now here, take this ten dollars and buy your shoes. Next time, don’t snatch my purse, nor anyone else’s — shoes got in bad ways will burn your feet!”
The boy really wanted to say something to Mrs. Jones. But he failed to say a word as he turned at the foot of the steps and looked up at the large woman.

Flora and her dad are moving to a new house soon. Next week, workers will turn the yard of the old house into a car park. The yard is full of beautiful flowers grown by Flora and Dad.
“My poor flowers,” Flora complains in a low voice, looking at the bright purple blooms sadly. She sits outside, selling things she doesn’t want to take to the new house. Beside her hangs a sign that says “Yard Sale”. Several of her neighbours come to have a look.
Dad comes out, holding some snacks in his hands. “Here’s a snack for everyone,” he says. Flora’s dad loves sharing things.
Occasionally, Flora digs her heels(鞋后跟) deep into the grass. Then she feels the soft earth move under her heels, and she knows what she can do.
She whispers her plan to Dad. He nods with a smile. Flora takes out some flowerpots happily and finds a tool to dig with. Carefully she digs up the flowers with some earth and puts them into the pots.
