    UNIT 4 HISTORY AND TRADITIONS
    In this perid, yu will: 1. learn t use the past participles as the attribute and the bject cmplement. 2. write a little stry r describe situatins by using the past participles.
    What is the past participle?

    1 Mst peple just use the shrtened name: “the United Kingdm” r “the UK”. 2 They use the same flag, knwn as the Unin Jack, …3 They had castles built all arund England, …4 The new prduct finally passed the required test.
    Lk at the sentences and circle the past participles. In pairs, discuss their functins. Then find mre sentences with the –ed frm in the text.

    Cmplete the phrases in the right clumn by using the past participles in the left clumn. Cmpare the meaning f each pair f phrases. Then make sentences with the phrases.
    Past Participles as the Attribute

    过去分词(短语)作定语过去分词短语作定语时位于被修饰词之后,即后置定语,而单个过去分词作定语一般前置;过去分词作定语时和被修饰词之间呈被动关系。当过去分词是像state-wned, heart-felt, hand-made这样的复合形式,或者前面有副词修饰时,一般放在被修饰词前面作前置定语。
    某些表示人的情绪变化的使令性动词,其过去分词作定语,表示人的某种心情、感受或者表情等,意为“……的”,这些动词的过去分词已经成为一个形容词。

    Past Participles as the bject cmplement

    vt. 保证;确保;担保
    过去分词作宾语补足语,表示被动的、完成的动作,宾语补足语与宾语之间常常存在逻辑上的动宾关系,即宾语是过去分词所表示的动作的承受者。
    【归纳】可以接过去分词作宾语补足语的(短语)动词有:1. watch, see, bserve, lk at, hear, listen t, find, ntice等感官动词。如: I watched the desk carried ut f the classrm.  The man fund his hmetwn entirely destryed.  
    2. make, get, have, keep, leave等使役动词。如: My mther has her hair cut every tw mnths. We must get the wrk finished befre 6 ’clck. The speaker didn’t knw hw t make himself understd.
    3. want, rder等表示希望、命令等意义的动 词。如: All f us wanted such questins discussed at the meeting. The manager rdered the prblem settled as sn as pssible.4. 介词with后也可接过去分词作宾语补足语,构成with复合结构。如: With mre flwers planted, the garden lks very beautiful.
