Zhang Feng, a 23-year-old man from Zhengzhou, China, has developed a special kind of kungfu skill. He called it “Shaolin Sunshine Hand”. It allows him to generate (产生) enough energy with his fists (拳头) to put out (熄灭)candles (蜡烛) up to three meters away.

I used to watch those Chinese kungfu films during the 80s and 90s. I used to love seeing kungfu actors make things far away with their fists, but at that time I knew it was not true. It showed that the young man named Zhang Feng put out 15 candles in a line three meters away with air or energy generated by his flying fists.

But the young man actually invited two reporters from The Zhengzhou Evening News newspaper into his home to see his act and then film him doing it. The two reporters tried their best, but were only able to put out one of the 15 candles set 10 cm apart, and even blowing air didn’t put out all the candles. Zhang Feng, on the other hand, put them all out just by throwing punches (挥拳猛击). The two reporters were in awe and couldn’t explain how he did it. There is a famous saying from the French politician J.A. Brillat-Savarin that goes: “Tell me what kind of food you eat, and I will tell you what kind of man you are.” It can be easy to not really think about what you eat. For example, whenever you go into a supermarket to buy a drink, it is all too easy to pick up an ice cream or a piece of chocolate as well. But now you’d better thank your parents for their time and money spent on your musical training. A recent study suggests music lessons can make children have better memories than their peers (同龄人).

The Canadian study showed that after one year of musical training, children did better on a memory test than those who didn’t take music lessons.

The researchers made the children aged between 4 and 6 into two groups — one group of children took music lessons outside school, and the other didn’t take any musical training. In one year, they took four tests in different times. The results showed brain (大脑) development changes at least every four months.

Google and Toyota have worked together to create a new smart car. It can run on the road without a driver. It drives itself. The self-driving car hasn’t been on sale to the public, so we don’t know how much it costs. Another thing most people want to know is whether it will be safe enough to run on the road.
