Zhang Feng, a 23-year-old man from Zhengzhou, China, has developed a special kind of kungfu skill. He called it “Shaolin Sunshine Hand”. It allows him to generate (产生) enough energy with his fists (拳头) to put out (熄灭)candles (蜡烛) up to three meters away.
I used to watch those Chinese kungfu films during the 80s and 90s. I used to love seeing kungfu actors make things far away with their fists, but at that time I knew it was not true. However, after I watched the video, I changed my idea. The video went very popular in China recently. It showed that the young man named Zhang Feng put out 15 candles in a line three meters away with air or energy generated by his flying fists.
You may say it’s not true, and you’re not the only one. But the young man actually invited two reporters from The Zhengzhou Evening News newspaper into his home to see his act and then film him doing it. The two reporters tried their best, but were only able to put out one of the 15 candles set 10 cm apart, and even blowing air didn’t put out all the candles. Zhang Feng, on the other hand, put them all out just by throwing punches (挥拳猛击). The two reporters were in awe and couldn’t explain how he did it. They said that Zhang Feng was a great Shaolin master.
( )1. What did the writer use to think of it seeing kungfu actors make things far away with their fists?

There is a famous saying from the French politician J.A. Brillat-Savarin that goes: “Tell me what kind of food you eat, and I will tell you what kind of man you are.” It can be easy to not really think about what you eat. For example, whenever you go into a supermarket to buy a drink, it is all too easy to pick up an ice cream or a piece of chocolate as well. You might not even really want them, but sometimes their bright, nice packaging(包装) can be too hard to refuse.
So, in our special food magazine we will show you why you should really pay more attention to what you eat! Food not only influences our health but also our beliefs(信念), customs(习惯) and personalities(个性).
The first article will look at the way fast food is leading to obesity (肥胖). The famous cook, Jamie Oliver, has made it his purpose to introduce ideas about healthy eating. In a speech, Jamie Oliver told the world that during the 18 minutes that he gave his speech, four Americans would die because of the food that they ate! Obesity is also a growing problem in China. As China Daily reported in February, the number of obese people under the age of 18 in China has reached 120 million.
Jamie has worked for 10 years to try and fight this problem. Learning about food is important not just because of health problems but also because many people still don’t have enough food today. And we know as the improvement of science sometimes we have to face genetically modified (转基因) food. Don’t worry – we’ll make you know more about all these topics in our special article!
We’ll also tell you something interesting about food. For example, do you know what the largest food on the menu is all over the world? It’s the roasted camel and it has been served for several hundred years, often stuffed (填满) with chicken, lamb(羔羊肉), egg, fish and rice!
Hopefully by the time you finish reading this edition(版本), you’ll pay more attention to the food that you eat. As Oliver says, food is something that can help us enjoy our life. It is important that we love it!
( )5. Where is J.A. Brillat-Savarin from?

Do you have the experience of taking music lessons against your wishes? Perhaps you have complained about it because you thought it took you much playtime. But now you’d better thank your parents for their time and money spent on your musical training. A recent study suggests music lessons can make children have better memories than their peers (同龄人).
The Canadian study showed that after one year of musical training, children did better on a memory test than those who didn’t take music lessons.
The researchers made the children aged between 4 and 6 into two groups — one group of children took music lessons outside school, and the other didn’t take any musical training. In one year, they took four tests in different times. The results showed brain (大脑) development changes at least every four months.
The children taking music lessons not only did better in musical listening but also made faster progress in other ways, such as reading, writing, math and IQ.

Google and Toyota have worked together to create a new smart car. It can run on the road without a driver. It drives itself. The self-driving car hasn’t been on sale to the public, so we don’t know how much it costs. Another thing most people want to know is whether it will be safe enough to run on the road.
The self-driving car uses electricity as its power, and it can’t drive very quickly—the top speed would be 25 miles per hour. It is actually controlled by a computer system (系统) on the car. The system keeps on collecting information by some video cameras inside the car and a LIDAR sensor (激光雷达传感器) on top of it. A computer processes the information and decides what to do. “The self-driving car has only buttons (按钮) for go and stop, so it’s very easy to use,” an engineer of Google says. “And what’s more, it will make car accidents less and make the world a safer place.” The self-driving car has driven hundreds of thousands of miles in California, and it has only gotten into two accidents by human mistake.
According to CNN, self-driving cars will also help to reduce (减少) the number of cars in big cities. “Self-driving cars would be able to send you to the workplace and then pick up another person instead of stopping in a parking lot.”
