If you think you're beaten, you are,

If you think you dare not, you don't.

If you'd like to win but you think you can't,

    It's almost certain you won't.

How much time do you spend looking at your smart phone, tablet or computer every day? These electronic devices help us m many ways, but they may also cause health problems.

Too much screen time can cause eyestrain which leaves your eyes feeling dry and sore and could also affect your eyesight. To help your eyes stay healthy, follow the “20-20-20” rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Your eyes aren't the only parts of your body that could become worse from using electronic devices. People who write a lot of text messages can develop an injury called texting thumb". The repeated movement of typing with thumbs can cause thumb and wrist pain and lead to the loss of grip strength (握力受损).To avoid this, do this exercise: put a rubber band around the tips of your five fingers and open your hand to stretch the rubber band. Repeat this a few times.

Scientific research suggests that electronic devices can also hurt your mind. One of the biggest problems is that using these devices can affect your sleep patterns. Doctors say the screen light stop you from feeling sleepy. So they advise people not to use electronic devices for at least one hour before trying to sleep.

Another serious danger is Internet addiction (瘾). Many people turn to the Internet to ease feelings of stress, sadness, and loneliness. Over time, they might start to depend on the Internet and feel worried if they're not connected To stop yourself from falling into this kind of trap, limit the amount of time you spend on line.

To use your smart phone or computer safely, just make sure you follow these health tips. Also, remember that there is more to life than looking at an electronic screen.

    B. feelings of stress, sadness and loneliness

    C. several serious mind problems

    D. people who have Internet addiction

    13. What's the passage mainly about?

I had the meanest(最刻薄的)mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal(谷类食物) and eggs. When others had Coke and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. But at least I wasn't alone. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother knew where we were at all times. She knew who our friends were.

We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath every day. The other kids got to wear the same clothes days.

We had to be in bed by 900 pm. and up at 800 am. We couldn't sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept, our mother gave us work to do. We had to wash dishes, make beds and learn to cook. I am sure she lay awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.

Through the years, things didn't improve a bit. We could not lie in bed “sick” like our friends did in order to miss school.

My mother was the meanest mother. Out of four children, a couple of us went on to higher education. None of us have ever done bad things. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest people. I am trying to raise my children like this. I will feel proud when my children call me mean, because, you see, I am so glad I had the meanest mother in the whole world.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin is one of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s works. She was born in 1811 in the USA. This book is more famous than her other works. In the first year of publication, it was sold more than 300,000 copies.

    Mr.Shelby ---Tom’s first master

Mr.Shelby treated Tom kindly because he thought Tom was a good person. And his son, George Shelby liked Tom very much, too. But he had to sell Tom because he was in debt. Tom felt sad after he knew he had to leave his wife and his children.Tom was sold to the trader,Haley.

    Eva’s family---Tom’s second master

Tom and other slaves(奴隶), controlled by Haley, started their journey on the Ohio River on a steamboat. Tom met not only well-dressed ladies and gentlemen but also a lovely girl named Eva. Once, Eva moved too quickly and fell into the river. Tom saved her out of water as quickly as he could. After Tom saved her, Eva’s father decided to buy him. Eva and his father, St. Clare treated Tom well.

    Legree---Tom’s last master

Unluckily, the girl died of illness. Because of her death and her wishes, her father decided to let Tom free. Tom was happy enough to return to his wife and children. But to everyone’s surprise, St.Clare was killed by some drunk men.Tom was sold again by Eva’s mother to Legree, who was very very cold-hearted. Legree treated his slaves so badly that he gave them much hard work. The slaves, including Tom, had to work from early in the morning until late in the evening.Tom helped another slave pick cotton. This made Legree very mad. What’s worse, two of the slaves, called Cassy and Emmeline, got away successfully. To find the truth, Legree hit Tom with fists until he fell down, and kicked him again and again, but Tom refused to tell him. At last,Tom helped and saved other people but himself. George Shelby only found the dead Tom.
