The feat-which pineering black hle therist James Bardeen called hpeless in 1973-represented a twering achievement f astrnmical technlgy. "It tk everyne a little by surprise that they gt such a gd image s fast," says Andrew Strminger, a theretical physicist at Harvard University.
Nw Strminger and ther researchers are back with a wild answer, which appeared last week in Science Advances. With a distance enugh telescpe, the EHT crdinatin culd see multiple reflectins f light streaming frm arund the black hle. By srting thrugh the precise pattern in these rays, astrnmers culd study black hles and test Einstein's thery f gravity like never befre. Basically, they hpe black hles will becme mre like stars and planets: nt just bjects t think abut, but t directly bserve.
The team did pencil-and-paper calculatins using Einstein's thery f General Relativity and sme simulatins(模拟) t analyze what black hles d t light. "Black hles, they're just kind f the best at everything they d," Lupsasca says. "And that includes bending light rays int lps(圈、环)."

4. The eastern Siberian landscape is nt nrmally like hell. In winter it is blanketed in snw: in summer, its frests are lush(苍翠繁茂的). This year, hwever, the regin is n fire, as are large parts f the Arctic Circle.
The fires began in June, caused by an extremely ht and dry early summer. It was the httest June n recrd glbally. In the regins that are burning, temperatures peaked at 8-10℃ warmer than the average frm 1981 t 2010. This has dried ut the landscape, prducing tinder(易燃物)fr natural frest fires.
S far, hundreds f abve-grund fires have been recrded by satellites in the Arctic and sub-Arctic. It is estimated that fires within the Arctic Circle have prduced mre than 100m tnnes f carbn dixide in a year. That is a lt. But burnt vegetatin can regrw within a decade, and in ding s reabsrbs much f the released carbn dixide. It is what is happening belw grund that mst wrries eclgists and climate scientists.
Glbal warming will melt Arctic permafrst(永久冻土), releasing large amunts f stred greenhuse gases. But if fires in the regin becme mre cmmn, that culd have even bigger cnsequences. Wildfires will release much faster and bigger amunts f carbn, rather than melting permafrst. The fires als prduce black carbn which,if drpped n the Arctic sea ice by favrable winds, will darken its surface, making it mre likely t absrb sunlight and melt. This decreases the reflectivity f the regin and further increases Arctic warming.
Smg frm the fires is blanketing much f Siberia. "What is scary abut the Arctic fires is that they are driven by climate change, and there's very little yu can d," says Thmas Smith. Few natural fires this big have ever been successfully managed. The nly way t deal with the spread f these fires is t slw the rate f glbal warming. Dn't hld yur breath.
