    第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
    第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
    A
Brits(英国人) are extremely bad at languages, with many of us relying on the fact that the rest of the world speak English. Only half(51%) are able to speak a second language to any standard and as more people travel abroad, this is becoming an increasing regret, according to a new study.
Almost twothirds(62%) of UK adults wish they were better at speaking languages. So they can better understand a city’s culture(38% of respondents), talk with locals(24%) and go beyond the guide book(21%).
Overcoming language barriers can be one of the most difficult parts of a holiday, particularly when in unfamiliar surroundings. So stressful in the fact that 10% of respondents said they didn’t travel because of the problem.
The survey by Hostelworld showed that one in five blamed getting lost on the language barrier, while a similar number had problems ordering food and one in ten got on the wrong train, plane or other form of transportation.
If languages weren’t an issue then one in eight(12%) Brits would visit Japan. China, Italy and Russia were also popular choices. Despite the communication problem, Japan has seen a 7.5% increase in the number of British visitors between January and April, compared to this time last year.
“The number of British travelers to Japan has been growing year on year,”according to Hollie Mantle, marketing and communication manager for the Japanese Tourist Board.“People are realizing that Japan is one of the most hospitable and beautiful countries on earth, with so many new experiences for travelers to try, not to mention worldclass cuisine!”
They had this message for Brits thinking about visiting:“Though some travelers worry about language barriers, as soon as you arrive in Japan, you’ll realize that people will go out of their way to help you enjoy their country. There really are few ‘barriers’—road signs and train stations are in English. You’ll find that people speak more English than they let on, and even when they don’t, they will go above and beyond to help you out.”

Don’t get mad the next time you catch your teenager texting when he promised to be studying. He simply may not be able to resist. A UI(University of Iowa) study found teenagers are far more sensitive than adults to the immediate effect or reward of their behaviors. The findings may help explain why the initial rush of texting may be more attractive for adolescents than the longterm payoff of studying.
“For the teenager, the rewards are attractive,” says Professor Jatin Vaidya, an author of the study. “They draw adolescents. Sometimes, the rewards are a kind of motivation for them. Even when a behavior is no longer in a teenager’s best interest to continue, he will still go on. That’s because the effect of the reward is still there and lasts much longer in adolescents than in adults.”
For parents, that means limiting distraction so teenagers can make better choices. Take the homework and social media dilemma for example: At 9 p.m., shut off everything except a computer that has no access to Facebook or Twitter, the researchers advise. “I’m not saying they shouldn’t be allowed to have access to technology,” Vaidya says. “But some help in netting their concentration is necessary for them so they can develop those impulse(冲动)control skills.”
In their study, Vaidya and coauthor Shaun Vecera note researchers generally believe teenagers are impulsive, make bad decisions, and engage in risky behavior because the frontal lobes(额叶) of their brains are not fully developed. But the UI researchers wonder whether something more fundamental is going on with adolescents to cause behaviors independent of higherlevel reasoning.
“We wanted to try to understand how the brain’s reward system changes from childhood to adulthood,”says Vaidya, who adds the reward character in the human brain is easier than decisionmaking. “We’ve been trying to understand the reward process in adolescence and whether there is more to adolescence behavior than an underdeveloped frontal lobe,” he adds. For their study, the researchers persuaded 40 adolescents, aged 13 and 16, and 40 adults, aged 20 and 35 to participate.
In the future, researchers hope to look into the psychological and neurological aspects of their results.
4.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Always, rewards are attractive to teenagers.
B.Resistance can be controlled well by adolescents.
C.Getting rewards is the greatest motivation for adolescents to study.
D.The initial rush of texting is less attractive for adolescents than the longterm payoff of studying.
5.Which statement agrees with Jatin Vaidya’s idea?
A.Children should have access to the Internet.
B.Children need help in refocusing their attention.
C.Parents should help children in making decisions.
D.The influence of the reward is weak in adolescents.
6.What result does teenagers’ brain underdevelopment lead to?
    A.Making good decisions.
    B.Escaping risky behavior.
    C.Joining in dangerous actions.
    D.Doing things after some thought.
7.How did the researchers carry out their study?
    A.By examining adults’ brain.
    B.By examining teenagers’ brain.
C.By building the brain’s reward system.
D.By making a comparison of brain examinations.
    C
    The two roads
It was New Year’s Night. An aged man was standing at a window. He raised his mournful eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like white lilies on the surface of a clear calm lake. When he cast them on the earth, where a few more hopeless people besides himself now moved towards their certain goal--- the tomb. He had already passed sixty of the stages leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but errors and regrets. Now his health was poor, his mind vacant, his heart sorrowful, and his old age short of comforts.
The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrance of the two roads---one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and resounding with soft, sweet songs; the other leading to a deep, dark cave, which was endless, where poison flowed instead of water and where devils and poisonous snake hissed and crawled.
He looked towards the sky and cried painfully, “O, my father, place me once more at the entrance to life, and I’ll choose the better way!” But both his father and the days of his youth had passed away.
He saw the lights flowing away in the darkness. These were the days of his wasted life; he saw a star fall from the sky and disappeared, and this was the symbol of himself. His regret, which was like a sharp arrow, struck deeply into his heart. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood, who entered on life with him. But they had made their way to success and were now honored and happy on this New Year’s night.
The clock in the church tower struck and the sound made him remember his parents’ early love for him. They had taught him and prayed to God for his good. But he chose the wrong way. With shame and grief he dared no longer look towards the heaven where his father lived. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despairing effort, he burst out a cry: “Come back, my early days! Come back”
And his youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year Night. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.
Those who still linger at the entrance of life, hesitating to choose the bright road, remember that when years are passed and your feet stumble on the dark mountains, you will cry bitterly, but in vain: “ O youth, return! Oh give me back my early days!”
    8. In the 3rd paragraph, the man cried painfully because _________.
    A. all the hopeless people were moving towards death

    D. He refused to take the road leading to a deep dark cave

    B. He was enjoying the New Year’s eve.
    C. He was wandering at the entrance to life.
    D. He was having a dream of his life in old age.
    10. We can infer from the story that _________.
    A. The man’s childhood friends led a joyful life like him
    B. The man still had the opportunity to chose the right way
    C. both the man’s parents passed away when he was young
    D. the man’s father was quite strict with his son before death
    11. The passage is mainly written for _________.

Have you ever heard a rumor spread around by students at your school? Rumors, like fake news, can often misinform individuals and lead them to believe false information.
In an attempt to settle this problem, the country of Singapore has passed a bill that bans companies and individuals from publishing false information online.
This law, known as The Protection From Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Bill, has caused a public outcry (强烈的抗议), as the government has been given the power to remove content that it considers inaccurate or against the public’s interest.
Since Singapore’s citizens are part of different racial and religious groups, the government fears that rumors or fake news can increase tensions within an already small country.
With the new law coming into effect, Singapore’s government now has the authority to monitor news sites, social media platforms, and other databases of information to determine whether the content is falsified. The government can order for the removal of fake news, and publishers of this information can receive prison time and fines up to one million Singapore dollars!
Critics fear that the bill threatens their freedom of speech and freedom of expression. Since national issues and world news are generally discussed on online platforms, many are concerned that this new bill will prevent individuals from talking freely and having healthy conversations.
Several companies, including Google, Facebook, and Twitter, have offices situated in Singapore, meaning that the new law will affect their company operations. Social media companies in Singapore could face a decline in activity, as users may fear posting their opinions and being punished by the government.
Others are concerned that the law does not clearly state what a “false statement” is. Such an ambiguity might allow the government to misuse their power, even though the intention is to curtail the mow of false information and rumors throughout Singapore.
This law does give rise to several concerns related to freedom and privacy and it will be interesting to see what Singapore’s government will do to deal with this problem.
    12. Why are some people against the bill?
    A. They think the bill can’t get rid of fake news.
    B. They belong to different racial and religious groups.
    C. They think their freedom of speech may be harmed.
    D. They don’t want to increase tensions in their country.
    13. What does the government have the right to do under the new law?
    A. Punish publishers of fake news.
    B. Monitor telephone conversations.
    C. Prohibit certain people from going online.
    D. Fine fake-news makers any amount of money.
    14. How will the new law affect social media companies in Singapore?
    A. Their users’ privacy may be disturbed.
    B. Their income will increase very slowly.
    C. Their illegal activities will come to light.
    D. Their social media may become less active.
    15. What does the underlined word in paragraph 8 probably mean?
    A. prove B. accelerate C. promote D. decrease

    The Art of Slow Reading
If you are reading this article in print, chances are that you will only get through half of what I have written. And if you are reading this online, you may not even finish a fifth. 16________ They suggest that many of us no longer have the concentration to read articles through to their conclusion.
So are we getting stupider? Actually, our online habits are damaging the mental power we need to process and understand textual information. Round-the-clock news makes us read from one article to the next without necessarily engaging fully with any of the content. Our reading is frequently interrupted by the noise of the latest email and we are now absorbing short bursts of words on Twitter and Facebook more regularly than longer texts. 17________But we are gradually forgetting how to sit back, think carefully, and relate all the facts to each other.
18________A desperate bunch of academics want us to take our time while reading, and re-reading. They ask us to switch off our computers every so often and rediscover both the joy of personal engagement with printed texts, and the ability to process them fully. What’s to be done then? Most slow readers realize that total rejection of the web is extremely unrealistic. They feel that getaway from technology for a while is the answer.19________
Personally, I’m not sure whether I could ever go offline for long. Even while writing this article, I am switching constantly between sites, skimming too often, absorbing too little. Internet reading has become too rooted in my daily life for me to change. I read essays and articles not in hard copy but as PDFs. I suspect that many readers are in a similar position.20________You can download a computer application called Freedom, which allows you to read in peace by cutting off your Internet connection. Or if you want to avoid being disturbed by the Internet, you could always download offline reader Instapaper for your iPhone. If you’re still reading my article, that is slow reading.
    A. The Internet is probably part of the problem.
    B. Now some campaigns are advocating slow reading.
    C. These are the two findings from the recent research projects.
    D. But if you just occasionally want to read more slowly, help is at hand.
    E. Some of them have suggested turning their computers off for one day a week.
    F. Slow reading can help connect a reader to neighborhood and become popular.
    G. Because of the Internet, we have become very good at collecting information.
