(2019·成都检测)Isabel has turned down two job offers in the past year. The first job she considered was the director of HR for a company in Utah. After the initial interviews, she felt the job fit her except for the location. Still, she flew west to meet the hiring manager. The hiring manager explained that Isabel was the top candidate for the job but that, before she continued with the process, she should better understand the firm's culture. She directed Isabel to several videos of the company's CEO,who regularly appeared in front of the company in costume as part of morale-building exercises and expected his senior leaders to do the same. “Even though I was desperate for a job,I knew I couldn't do that,” Isabel says. She called the company to turn down the job and explained that she didn't feel there was a cultural fit.
A few months later, she had an interview for another job:a director of employee relations at a local university. After several interviews, the hiring manager told her the job was hers if she wanted it. The job had many positives:it provided a low-stress environment,it offered great benefits, and the university was an employee-friendly place. But the job was relatively junior despite the title and Isabel worried it wouldn't be challenging enough. Finally, she turned it down. “It would be great to have a paycheck and great benefits but I would definitely have trouble sleeping at night,”she says.
In both cases, she was frank with the hiring managers about why she wasn't taking the jobs. “In the past,it felt like dating, and I was worried about hurting people's feelings,” she says. However, they appreciated her frankness and thanked her for her honesty. She says it was hard to turn down the jobs and it was a risk for her financially but she felt she had to.

(2019·甘肃省重点中学联考)Coming facetoface with your inadequacies(缺点) can be painful,to say the least. 1 It even makes you question yourself. Your kneejerk reaction may be to get defensive or even dismiss the critique entirely. But handling negative feedback with grace will not only make you look gracious, but it could ultimately help you grow as a person. Here's how to do it.
    1.Be objective about the criticism
Before you jump to conclusions and begin to challenge the other person's opinion, take a step back and look at it objectively.
Next time you get a bad review, don't immediately allow your emotions to get the better of you,but rather, take a moment to consider whether the criticism is at all accurate. 2
    2.Avoid unnecessary conflict
If you decide that the point is valid,it may be hard to take. In your discomfort, you may feel the urge to criticize the other person angrily and defend yourself. 3
3.Be open to the idea of change
4 And it may be because of a concept called“cognitive dissonance”that can prevent us from changing even when that's what we need most.
    4.Ask questions
If you're open to using the criticism as a springboard to improvement, you will likely need more information. 5 Your emotions will be running high, and you may not be particularly receptive to extra information. However, when you feel ready,it could be worth revisiting the subject with the person who criticized you. Even if you don't agree with their advice, thank them and promise to consider it.
A.Most of us are pretty stubborn.
B.There is no doubt that change is necessary.
C.But it's best to avoid getting into an argument.
D.Being sensitive to criticism leads you nowhere.
E.It challenges the way you believe people see you.
F.Give yourself a chance to really take in the information and evaluate it.
G.The initial moment you hear it may not be the best time to ask for more details.
2.F [根据空前“don't immediately allow your emotions to get the better of you,but rather, take a moment to consider whether the criticism is at all accurate”可知,空处应讲给自己一个机会真正吸收这些信息并对其进行评估。
4.A [根据空后的“And it may be because of a concept called‘cognitive dissonance’ that can prevent us from changing even when that's what we need most”及本段小标题可知,A项“我们大部分人都很倔强”符合语境。]
5.G [根据空后的“Your emotions will be running high, and you may not be particularly receptive to extra information”并结合上文可知,空处应讲最开始听到批评时不适合问更多的细节,故G项符合语境。]

during表示“在……
“be+形容词+enough+to do sth.
that引导的从句中主语是I,taking good care of的宾语指的就是主语I,故此处要用I的反身代词myself。]
be devoted to doing sth.
