Then in my mid-thirties, I decided t jin the public speaking grup Tastmasters. At every meeting, we were rated and frced t cmpete with ther speakers fr an award. Yu wuld think that I wuld walk away frm these experiences as a plished speaker, but nthing seemed t wrk.
It wasn’t until recently, when science and scientific institutins were being attacked fr unfair reasns during the pandemic, that I decided I must speak ut. Science has made this cuntry a place where dreams cme true — this is why we all need t prtect science. In additin, as a science writer, I try t get readers t understand hw science is related t their daily lives.
S I ended up n that frightening stage n that sunny Saturday in April — Earth Day. Despite the bdy shakes and fear, I persevered. That day, I lked ut int the crwd f like-minded science supprters and I felt cmfrt.
Reaching that milestne gal f getting thrugh a speech truly changed me. At almst frty, I learned that passin can set ff a flame in my heart t d things I never dreamed pssible. The darkness that led t my speech is sure t lead t new pprtunities and adventures.

Have yu ever wndered hw yur favrite NBA team received its famus name? All NBA teams have an interesting stry r a histry behind their names. Sme f the names reflected the city’s culture r histry, thers came frm previus wners and many were selected thrugh “Name the Team” cntests.
Fr teams like the Ls Angeles Lakers and the Utah Jazz, the names were nt always a reflectin f the city. Even thugh Ls Angeles has n lakes, the Lakers name has been a city treasure fr almst 40 years. Befre ging t Ls Angeles, the team riginated in Minneaplis, Minnesta. In 1947, team fficials changed the name t the Lakers t reflect the Minnesta State’s nickname, “Land f 10,000 Lakes”. The team name went unchanged after mving t Ls Angeles in 1960.
Because the Utah’s team riginated in New Orleans, Luisiana, it was called the Jazz. In 1974, New Orleans club fficials chse the name t represent the city fr its reputatin as the “Jazz Capital f the Wrld”. The name stayed with the team even after they fund a new hme in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979.
The riginal wner f the Chicag Bulls, Richard Klein, named the team the Bulls. He picked the name because a fighting bull is relentless and never quits. Klein, wh funded the club in 1966, believed these qualities were necessary fr a champinship team and hped his Chicag athletes wuld live up t the team name. The Bulls, the winner f the six NBA champinships, has definitely fllwed the belief.
In 1967, the Indiana Pacers selected their team name in a different way frm mst ther teams. Their decisin was based n what they wanted t achieve in the NBA. Team fficials chse the Pacers name because the rganizatin wanted t set the “pace” in prfessinal basketball.

Each year, the wrld lses abut 10 millin hectares f frest—at area abut the size f Iceland — because f cutting dwn trees. At that rate, sme scientists predict the wrld’s frests culd disappear in 100 t 200 years. T handle it, nw researchers at Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MIT) have pineered a technique t generate wd-like plant materials sin a lab. This makes it pssible t “grw” a wden prduct withut cutting dwn trees.
In the lab, the researchers first take cells frm the leaves f a yung plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium fr tw days, then mved t anther medium which cntains nutrients and tw different hrmnes (激素). By adjusting the brmne levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities f the cells: New the researchers use a 3D printer t shape the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grw in the dark fr three mnths. Finally, the researchers dehydrate (使脱水) the material, and then evaluate its qualities.
They fund that lwer brmne levels lead t plant materials with mre runded, pen cells f lwer density (密度), while higher hrmne levels cntribute t the grwth f plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lwer r higher density f cell structures makes the plant materials sfter r mre rigid, helping the materials grw with different wd-like characteristics. What’s mre, it’s t be nted that the research prcess is abut 100 times faster than the time it takes fr a tree t grw t maturity!
Research f this kind is grund-breaking. “This wrk demnstrates the great pwer f a technlgy,” says lead researcher, Jeffrey Berenstab. “The real pprtunity here is t be at its best with what yu use and hw yu use it. This technlgy can be tuned t meet the requirements yu give abut shapes, sizes, rigidity, and frms. It enables us t grw’ any wden prduct in a way that traditinal agricultural methds can’t achieve.”
12. Why d researchers at MIT perfrm the research?
A. T grw mre trees.B. T reduce tree lsses.
C. T prtect plant diversity.D. T predict frest disappearance.
13. What des paragraph 2 mainly tell us abut the lab research?
A. Its scientific rigins.B. Its theretical basis
C. Its usual difficulties.D. Its main prcesses
14. What des the finding suggest abut the plant materials?
A. They are better than naturally grwn plants.
B. Their grwth speed determines their characteristics.
C. The hrmne levels affect their rigidity.
D. Their cells’ shapes mainly rely n their density.
15. Why is the research path-breaking accrding t Berenstain?
A. It uses new bilgical materials in lab experiments.
B. It has a significant impact n wrldwide plant grwth.
C. It revlutinizes the way t make wden prducts.
D. It challenges traditinal scientific theries in frestry.
