Passage 1
(2024·山东济南模拟)When 76yearld AntinetteMarie Williams played 17yearld Emmett Daniels in chess fr the first time, she gave Daniels a run fr his mney. Paired thrugh DOROT, a New Yrk rganisatin which was launched in 1976, they are a perfect match. “I was a gd ppnent fr him. I dn't think he expected it,” Williams tld the CVS Health blg Frtune Well. Their weekly games have led Daniels and Williams t a crssgeneratinal relatinship that they bth enjy. Williams and Daniels' relatinship disprves the idea that peple f different generatins have little in cmmn.
Since its funding, DOROT has achieved a reputatin f excellence and innvatin in the fields f aging services. Vlunteers f yung ages ffer critical resurces t lder adults, in services specific t the persn's needs and interests, with the ultimate gal f lessening lneliness f the ld.
Lneliness has been recgnised as a significant scial issue fr many years, but the classificatin f lneliness as an epidemic(流行病) has emerged nly in recent years. In 2018, the UK gvernment appinted a Minister fr Lneliness, highlighting the increasing cncern arund the issue. This fllwed the publicatin f the 2017 reprt by the J Cx Cmmissin n Lneliness, which fund that lneliness was a grwing scial epidemic and called fr a natinal strategy t address the issue.
Frtunately, there are ways t battle lneliness, including the interventin in the lives f islated senirs by rganisatins like DOROT. It advcates building a supprt netwrk by reaching ut t family and friends, jining a cmmunity r scial grup, r vlunteering t cnnect with likeminded peple. The cnnectin between Williams and Daniels shws that these intergeneratinal relatinships play an imprtant rle in reducing lneliness and adding jy t the lives f all the participants, yung and ld.
Anther way t battle lneliness is t use technlgy t stay cnnected with lved nes which fsters meaning and purpse thrugh nline activities and cnversatins. Practising selfcare is als encuraged, as is being patient because strng relatinships take time and effrt t create.

The native grasses, nce green, have disintegrated int grey ash. Accrding t United Natins' estimates, glbal crp prductin culd fall abut 30% because f climate change, while fd is sharply demanded in the cming decades. The wrld is facing a new age f rapidly increasing fd prices that culd push almst 2 billin mre peple int hunger in a wrstcase climate crisis.
Facing the scary predictins, farmers have begun t adapt. On Brwn's farm, she's experimenting with regenerativefarming practices better suited t drught. She's explring alternatives t traditinal methds that dn't push the land as hard. Meanwhile many agrichemical cmpanies are develping new varieties fr vegetables, like cabbages that are mre resistant t extreme weather.
Acrss the glbe, farmers are switching seeds and imprving irrigatin(灌溉). Lucas Oliveira in Brazil is pulling ut half his cffee trees t plant crn and sybeans instead. He is being frced t change curse after cffee crps suffered frm drught and then an extreme frst. With drught hitting Califrnia, Fritz Durst is wrking t trap water. He's barded up pipes t hld the rain that des fall. Durst will als plant cver crps, which can help enrich sils and prevent ersin(水土流失).

(2024·湖南长沙模拟)Knwn n scial media as The Siux Chef, Sean Sherman grew up n the Pine Ridge Indian Reservatin. He is recnnecting the lcals f Nrth America with native flavurs and ingredients, and wrking t inspire a generatin f indigenus(本土的) chefs t reclaim their cking past.
Pine Ridge in Suth Dakta cntains sme f the prest cmmunities in the cuntry, and it's ut f that envirnment that Sherman gt his first jb in the restaurant industry as a dishwasher at a lcal steakhuse. As he develped a lve f cking, which saw him mve t Minneaplis t study Japanese and French cuisines, Sherman realised he didn't knw indigenus recipes.
“What were my Lakta ancestrs eating and string away? Hw were they getting ils, salts and fats and things like that?” Sherman remembered asking himself in an interview n PBS NewsHur. “S it tk me quite a few years f just researching, but it really became a passin.”
These years f researching, talking t elders, and cnsulting written material helped him prduce The Siux Chefs Indigenus Kitchen, which in 2018 wn Sherman the James Beard Award fr Best American Ckbk.
After publishing the bk, Sherman pened his restaurant, Owamni, in Minneaplis and created the Nrth American Traditinal Indigenus Fd Systems(NATIFS). It is a prfessinal indigenus kitchen and training centre that seeks t create an educatinal space fr native chefs t be trained and develp their skills, and recnnect with their cking heritage.
“Part f ur challenge t urselves was t cut ut ingredients that are nt native s we stpped using dairy, wheat flur and cane sugar,” he said. He cks with lcal ingredients. His chices f meats are the same as thse hunted by his ancestrs—deer, fish, and birds.
“Fr indigenus peple wh went thrugh very strng assimilatin(同化现象), we lst a lt f ur fd culture,” Sherman said. “But we're at a pint nw where we can reclaim it and develp it fr the next generatin. T be able t share culture thrugh fd will be really healing.”

Passage 4
(2023·安徽名校联盟高三12月大联考)Listening t an audibk(有声书) befre bed affects a persn's brain activity after they nd ff as well as the cntent f their dreams.
Better understanding this effect culd help treat certain mental health cnditins by targeting memry prcessing during sleep. When we sleep, ur brain spntaneusly(自发地) “replays”, r reactivates, patterns f electrical activity that are related t learning t transfer imprtant new infrmatin t lngterm memry strage. It has been suggested that dreams may reflect this reactivatin, but exactly hw is unclear.
T investigate, Deniz Kumral at the University f Freiburg, Germany, and her clleagues asked 20 peple t listen t different audibks just befre they went t sleep. These included The Mystery f the Blue Train by Agatha Christie and Inkheartt by Crnelia Funke.
Amng the participants wh remembered their dreams, the researchers culd identify which audibk each had heard frm their descriptins f the dreams. While the participants slept, the researchers als used an EEG(脑电图) cap that detects electrical activity t recrd their brain waves. This shwed that the wave patterns during the rapid eye mvement phase f sleep, when dreams ccur, were mre similar between thse wh had heard the same audibk than thse wh had heard different nes, suggesting that the listening experience shaped the brain activity.
Further analysis f the patterns revealed that highfrequency beta waves—between 18 and 30 hertz—were mst strngly assciated with the participants recalling the audibkrelated cntent f their dreams. The findings suggest that daily life experiences can shape dream cntent via memry reactivatin, accrding t the researchers. But while dreaming may serve a distinct purpse in memry frmatin, it culd als be a byprduct f memry prcessing.
“Daytime experiences are rarely replayed as experienced, but are almst always mdified r surface in different cntexts,” says Kumral. “Individuals with certain psychlgical cnditins r mental prblems might benefit frm tailred strategies that enhance memry prcessing r treat disrders f dreaming during sleep, ptentially cntributing t imprving mental and emtinal health.”

The internatinal team f scientists wh studied the regin were hping fr deserts springing t life. “Instead, we learnt the cntrary, as we fund that rain in the dry cre f the Atacama Desert caused a massive extinctin f mst native micrbe(微生物) species there,” said study cauthr Albert Fairén.
Befre the rain fell, this regin f the Atacama had been hme t 16 different ancient micrbe species. But after the rain fell, just tw t fur species were still fund t be surviving in the resultant pl f water. The extinctin event, believed t have been abut 85 percent f life in the sil, was caused by the sudden influx f water. In particular, these micrbes were adapted t survive in extreme dryness. They were unable t adapt quickly enugh t the unexpected rainfall.
But it's nt all bad news. The team als fund nitrates(硝酸盐) in the Atacama Desert that were indicative f a lengthy dry perid, while als acting as fd fr the micrbes. And we've recently fund nitrates n Mars, which culd be indicating a similar prcess there.

T explre the impact f parents' wrk n their children's develpment, my team cnducted a study that fllwed mre than 370 lwwage, wrkingclass families ver mre than ten years. We intentinally fcused n lwwage families, as they generally receive far less attentin in the wrkfamily literature while facing sme f the greatest challenges. We, therefre, culd get mre authentic datA. We cmpleted inhme interviews and firsthand bservatins f parentchild interactins with strict assessments and reprts frm parents and teachers.
The data shwed that parents wh experienced mre autnmy n the jb and wh had mresupprtive managers and cwrkers were in turn warmer and mre engaged when interacting with their children. Checking back in with these families years later, we cnsistently saw that the children f emplyees wh had had mrepsitive wrk experiences in their first years as parents had better reading and maths skills, and better scial skills.
S it is imprtant t prmte wrkers' physical and mental health. Sme rganisatins tend t fcus n highlevel plicy changes such as flexible scheduling ptins, mre paid leave, etc. And t be sure, these systemic initiatives are certainly imprtant. But ur research suggests that ensuring wrkers feel respected and supprted in their daily wrk is ften just as critical. That means emplyers shuld give emplyees the time and space t share their experiences and ideas. In this way, emplyers will ensure wrkers feel buyant in their daily wrk. The wrkers will feel bright and lively, enjying mre autnmy and respect.
Ultimately, hw cmpanies treat their wrkers tday will determine hw the next generatin grws up tmrrw. That means building wrkplaces that value the welfare f wrking parents—and that f their children, t.

Stressrs like dehydratin(脱水) and damage t leaves gave rise t the plants' highpitched(尖声的) cries, which ranged frm 20 t 250 kHz. The bigger the danger is, the mre frequent a plant's signals are.“Unstressed plants emitted less than ne sund per hur, n average,” researcher Lilach Hadany said, “while the stressed plants—bth dehydrated and injured—emitted dzens f sunds every hur.”
T catch these sunds, Hadany's team surrunded tmat and tbacc plants with supersensitive micrphnes. They then fed the data int an artificial intelligence prgramme that culd tell the difference between the species f plant and the types f sunds prduced.
“Our findings suggest that the wrld arund us is full f plant sunds, and that these sunds cntain infrmatin,” Hadany wrte. She added that t translate that infrmatin, we just need the “right tls such as sensrs that tell grwers when plants need watering”. Then, a test that lked at her full genetic details fund a rare bleeding disrder. Catching the disrder early saved her life. “Yu have this hpeless feeling when yu dn't really knw what's ging n,” said her father, Mike Schulte. He nted that the test made a difference in finding the cause and “getting her the right care that she needed almst immediately”.
Brynn, nw 4, gt the genetic testing as part f a clinical trial, the results f which were published recently in The Jurnal f the American Medical Assciatin. Testing all f the details f a persn's genes is called “whle genme” testing. Whle genme tests are much better than narrwly targeted tests when it cmes t finding genetic differences, called abnrmalities, which can cause disease. The study fund 49 percent f these abnrmalities, cmpared t 27 percent with mre cmmnly used tests targeting nly sme genetic diseases.
Whle genme tests culd slve the prblem f ding several narrwly targeted tests n babies, which still might nt find the disrder. Experts warn there are sme prblems because labs vary in hw they understand results. Als, whle genme tests are mre expensive and less likely t be cvered by insurance.
But researchers hpe that whle genme tests will at sme pint be used fr millins f hspitalised babies with rare and difficult cnditins. The US Natinal Human Genme Research Institute has fund that arund 350 millin peple arund the wrld live with rare disrders. And it fund that abut 80 percent f the mre than 7,000 cnditins are genetic.

Passage 10
[2023·河南豫北名校联考(二)]While sme critics claim that histry curricula(课程) teach unnecessary cntent, thers argue that these curricula need t be mre cmprehensive. Despite nging debates abut cntent, ne universal truth remains: strng histry curricula are necessary fr develping the prductive citizens f tmrrw.
The greatest academic value that histry curricula prvide is nt the recall f imprtant dates and names. Rather, understanding the histrical enquiry prcess is the mst imprtant cmpnent. This prcess teaches students hw t becme critical thinkers and understand the dynamic nature f the telling f histry.
Thrugh strng histry curricula, students are shwn bth a variety f primary and secndary surces and are taught t critique them. This is where the histrical enquiry prcess begins. Students nt nly begin t analyse and ask questins abut the cntent, but they als learn abut the authr's credibility and ptential bias(偏见). Students are then able t cntextualise the infrmatin they learn and can think mre critically abut histrical cntext and thse wh tell it.
With this framewrk, students can then understand the causal relatinship between human nature, values, philsphy, actins, and their cnsequences. It teaches students t recgnise recurrent themes and lessns that are necessary t understand mdern sciety. Mst imprtantly, it teaches students t develp a healthy skepticism(怀疑论) when presented with infrmatin tday because ur actins are histry in the making.
Frty years ag, renwned schlar James Fitzgerald argued that n educatin is cmplete withut the teaching f histrical enquiry. He believed that the nly way t mve frward in life is t understand what's behind us.
Tday, this principle still hlds true. Students take bth the factual knwledge and the histrical enquiry skills they learn in the classrm and apply them t real wrld circumstances. Thrughut their lives, students wh are taught with strng histry curricula will take the lessns they learn frm ur predecessrs and becme invlved, active, prductive citizens wh want t create a histry that tmrrw's students will be prud t learn abut.
1.What is the biggest academic significance f histry learning?
A.Passing dwn Chinese culture.

Passage 11
(2023·湖北部分重点中学高三10月大联考)Happiness, as I see it, cmprises five elements: spiritual wellbeing (meaning and purpse), physical wellbeing (nutritin, exercise), intellectual wellbeing (curisity, deep learning), relatinal wellbeing (kindness and genersity), and emtinal wellbeing (cultivating psitive emtins). As an interdependent aggregate f these five elements f SPIRE, happiness is abut much mre than experiencing pleasure.
As Aristtle put it, happiness is the ultimate purpse f life, meaning hw we spend ur everyday lives is ultimately guided by what we think wuld make us happier. This is nt a gd r a bad thing. It simply is, like the law f nature. Even peple wh are tirelessly wrking fr an imprtant cause, fr example, t get rid f wrld hunger, are ding it because they find their wrk meaningful. Meaning is an element f happiness.
One barrier t happiness has t d with the expectatin that happiness is an unbrken chain f psitive emtins. This expectatin, hwever, prevents peple frm experiencing happiness because painful emtins dn't g away but grw strnger when we reject them.
