Science may never knw what memries play n the mind f the Califrnia sea hare, a ft-lng marine snail, when it eats algae — a sea plant — in the tide pls f the Pacific cast.
But in a new study, researchers claim t have made headway in understanding the simplest kind f memry a creature might frm.
David Glanzman, a neurbilgist at the University f Califrnia, believes the kinds f memries that trigger a defensive reactin in the snail are encded nt in the cnnectins between brain cells, as many scientists wuld argue, but in RNA mlecules (分子) that frm part f an rganism’s genetic machinery.
In an experiment t test the idea, Glanzman implanted wire int the tails f Califrnia sea hares, and gave them a series f electrical shcks. The prcedure sensitized the animals s that when they were prdded (戳) in a fleshy sput called a siphn, they cntracted their gills (鳃状呼吸器官) in a strng defensive actin.
After sensitizing the sea snails, Glanzman extracted RNA frm the animals and injected it int ther sea snails t see what happened. He fund the recipient sea snails became sensitized, suggesting the “memry” f the electrical shcks had been transplanted. When Glanzman repeated the experiment with RNA frm sea snails that had been hked up t wires but nt shcked, the reactin behavir did nt transfer.
Despite the result, the wrk has nt fund widespread acceptance. “Obviusly further wrk needs t be carried ut t determine whether these changes can happen withut failure in a wide range f cnditins,” said Prf Sherilynn Vann, wh studies memry at Cardiff University. “While the sea hare is a fantastic mdel fr studying basic neurscience, we must be very cautius in drawing cmparisns t human memry prcesses.”
Tmas Ryan, wh studies memry at Trinity Cllege Dublin, is firmly uncnvinced. “It’s interesting, but I dn’t think they’ve transferred a memry,” he said. “This wrk tells me that maybe the mst basic behaviral respnses invlve sme kind f switch in the animal and there is smething in the liquid that Glanzman extracts that is hitting that switch.”
But Ryan added that different thinking abut memry was badly needed: “In a field like this which is s full f accepted beliefs, we need as many new ideas as pssible. This wrk takes us dwn an interesting rad, but I have a huge amunt f skepticism abut it.”
1. Why were the sea hares given electrical shcks?
A. T rb them f their memry.
B. T see hw they defend themselves.
C. T break the cnnectin between nerves.
D. T make them sensitive t external stimulatins.
2. What cnclusin may Glanzman draw frm the experiment?
A. Memry can be encded and changed by peple.
B. Only with strng stimulatin can sea snails frm reactin.
C. The memry giving rise t sea snail’s sensitizatin is held in RNA.
D. The sea snail’s defense is prbably enabled by cnnectivity f brain cells.
3. Accrding t the passage, the limitatins f Glanzman’s experiment invlve the fllwing EXCEPT ________.
A The recipient sea snail’s respnse may require further cnfirmatin.
B. Variables (变量) in the experiments may nt have remained the same.
C Smething else ther than RNA in the extract may lead t the recipient’s reactin.
D. The sea snail “memry transplant” may nt apply t mre cmplex memry prcess.
4. The underlined wrd “skepticism” in the last paragraph is clsest in meaning t ________.
A. criticismB. dubtC. reliefD. ptimism

If yu find yurself in the middle f a mving crwd, d nt fight against the pressure, d nt stand still r sit dwn, because yu can easily get trampled (踩踏). Instead, mve in the same directin f the crwd; make use f any space that may pen up t mve sideways t the crwd mvement where the flw is weaker.
Keep yur hands up by yur chest, like a bxer — it gives yu mvement and prtects yur chest. If yu fall, get up quickly. If yu can’t get up because yu are injured, get smene t pull yu up. If yu have kids, lift them up.
If yu fall and cannt get up, keep mving in the same directin f the crwd, r if that is nt pssible, then cver yur head with yur arms; d nt lie n yur stmach r back.
