Birds rely n their keen sense f hearing t detect prey(猎物) and identify ther birds n the basis f their sngs. In fact, birds have better hearing than humans, s they hear with much mre detail. S hw d birds hear?
Birds and humans bth have an inner ear and a middle ear. Hwever, birds differ frm humans in that they lack an external ear structure. Where humans have an uter ear rgan, birds have a funnel-shaped(漏斗状的) pening that functins as their uter ear, lcated n each side f their head. These penings are usually psitined behind and slightly belw a bird’s eyes and are prtected by sft feathers.
The psitin f a bird’s head als plays a rle in its hearing abilities. Scientists have determined that nises register(显示) at different frequencies n each side f the bird’s head. Depending n the angle frm which the nise riginates, it registers with a certain frequency in the left eardrum(耳膜) but with a different frequency in the right eardrum. This allws the bird t lcate a sund’s rigin.
Let’s take a lk at wls. They are knwn fr their extremely accurate hearing, which helps them lcate prey at night. This hearing ability is partly due t the unbalanced arrangement f the ear penings, with ne pening being lwer than the ther. Sunds register in these penings at slightly different times. Owls can use this time difference, which is nly 30 millinths f a secnd, t determine whether the sunds are cming frm their left r their right. Other birds f prey have small cvers in frnt f their ears that help them determine whether sunds are cming frm abve them r belw them. Sme wls d appear t have ears n the tp f their head, but thse are actually feathers cntrlled by small muscles under the skin that d nt affect their hearing at all.
28.Accrding t paragraph 2, what is the majr difference between birds’ ears and humans’ cars?

B.Sund quality arund the bird.
C.The difference in frequencies between the eardrums.
