Every six days, students at Hite Elementary Schl get an extra 50 minutes f math-fcused instructin. They play simple math games and cunt alud t learn number recgnitin — it’s all dne in Chinese.
Principal Tim Hagan said Chinese language instructin enhances the schl’s existing Singapre Math curriculum (课程), which attributes (归因) the math skill gap between Chinese — and English-speaking students t language differences and the way students understand numbers.
The Natinal Center fr Educatin Statistics (NCES) cnducts a study every fur years t cmpare the math ability f students frm mre than 50 cuntries. Fr the past 20 years, students in Chinese-speaking cuntries have rutinely utperfrmed thse in English-speaking cuntries. “One f the reasns that Chinese students have dne well in math is their language itself autmatically breaks apart numbers int tens and nes,” said Hite Chinese teacher Emily Smith. “We’re having t teach kids t d that because ur language desn’t d it autmatically.”
Fr the 2022-23 schl year, Hite prvided $60,000 schl-based funds t purchase and fllw the Singapre Math curriculum, which math teachers taught in English. Students learned t cunt the “say ten way” — where “eleven” became “ten ne” and twelve became “ten tw”.
Offering Chinese language instructin is just taking it ne step further, Smith said. In Chinese, the “say ten way” is hw numbers are naturally learned and spken, she explained, adding that saying “twenty” in Chinese is like saying “tw ten”.
Hagan called the Chinese system mre efficient than English in getting students t visualize, understand and calculate numbers. He has already seen imprvement. Standardized test scres released earlier this mnth revealed the schl’s “greatest increase in perfrmance was in kids wh have truble in math”.
Students als respnded psitively t Chinese instructin. Furth-grade student Anna Kersting, 9, said she felt learning numbers in Chinese was easy. “Yu use all the same numbers frm ne t 99.” she said.

Cats are cmmn and belved pets. Litterbx issues are amng the mst cmmn challenges assciated with cats, and can even result in giving up the pet. Cats can, fr example, urinate r defecate (排尿或排便) utside the litterbx, in places undesirable fr the wner.
Researchers at the University f Helsinki (UH) identified several links between varius risk factrs and the litterbx issues. Identifying a range f risk factrs makes it pssible t imprve cnditins in the cat’s envirnment, thus preventing and reducing litterbx issues.
The study emplyed a dataset invlving mre than 4,000 cats, including extensive infrmatin n their persnalities, backgrunds, health and current envirnments. Tw behaviural traits (特征) assciated with litterbx use were identified: siling utside the litterbx and aviding the litterbx because f its uncleanliness r quality. The study investigated the link between 34 variables and the tw behaviural traits mentined.
“The cat’s persnality makes a difference, since fearfulness is assciated with bth f the undesirable behaviural traits. The fewest prblems ccurred in cats under fur mnths f age, while the highest ccurred in male cats. Older cats and cats living in families with children were mre sensitive abut the cleanliness f their litterbxes. In terms f different breeds (品种), Bengal cats had the mst prblems n average, while Siberian and Neva Masquerade cats had the least,” says Prfessr Hannes Lhi.
Cats with high sciability twards ther cats had fewer prblems than less scial cats. The researchers assume that a high scre fr sciability reflected the cat’s ability t live tgether with ther cats in the husehld, reducing the likelihd f stress caused by ther cats and, cnsequently, litterbx issues.
“Due t the nature f the data, direct causatin cannt be established n the basis f the results, but it appears that prblems can already be prevented when selecting individuals fr breeding by favuring nn-fearful and sciable individuals. The likelihd f litterbx issues can be reduced als by keeping the litterbx clean and ensuring that all f the cats in the husehld have a bx f their wn,” Dctral Researcher Saila Mikkla states, as a summary f the results.
8. What did the UH study fcus n?

A. A male cat brn in Siberia.
B. A Bengal cat living with tw kids.
C. A Neva Masquerade cat ften playing with thers.
D. A three-mnth-ld cat sharing the litterbx with ther cats.
11. What des Salla Mikkla think f the study?
A. It is helpful thugh the reasns are unprven.
B. It is well designed but the findings are limited.
C. It is prly cnducted but the suggestins are applicable.
D. It is disappinting thugh the variables are directly crrelated.

Fr all f ur lives, cities have been, well, cities. Tall buildings, crwded neighbrhds, and gd pizza (mre r less). But what shuld a gd city lk like, really?
In the age f Zm, when wrkers are increasingly independent frm the physical ffice space, cities need t be mre than tall buildings. They need t be livable. In ther wrds, if yu can live where yu want, then cities need t be a place yu want t live.
That trend is nt entirely new. Mre than 20 years ag, I wrte a stry abut hw San Francisc was becming the mdel fr a new kind f city — essentially an urban playgrund. Nt every city has t becme its wn San Francisc. But it needs t have its restaurants and theaters, green spaces and bike paths. What’s interesting is that thrugh the centuries, public health crises have played imprtant rles in ding just that — making cities mre livable.
A 2021 United Natins reprt ntes that during the bubnic plague (黑死病), Lucca, Italy, required all its residents t clean the street in frnt f their huses every Saturday. In the 19th century, cncerns abut tuberculsis (结核病) in the United States led t a demand fr mre pen spaces. The result was public parks like the Emerald Necklace in Bstn. The lessn is the same as it has always been. The mst resilient (适应力强的) cities are the nes built with their citizens’ well-being in mind.
It’s a reminder that cities change as scieties change. The mdern city grew ut f the Industrial Revlutin, as cities became centers fr factries. The rise f tall buildings kept cities at the center f ecnmic activity. But what des that mean when marketers can d their jb frm the Maine cast r the Himalayas? It seemingly means that, t advance, cities must nce again find a way t be a better versin f themselves.
12. What gives rise t the change f mdern cities?
A. Many ffice wrkers lst their jbs.
B. Mre emplyees can wrk remtely.
C. Mre tall buildings have been built in cities.
D. Many peple cme t cities t find pprtunities.

A. San Francisc has t many fllwers.
B Other cities dn’t invest in public facilities.
C. San Francisc is develping faster than mst cities.
D. Other cities dn’t have t cpy San Francisc’s style.
14. What shuld the mst adaptable city be based n in the authr’s view?
A. Strng ecnmy.B. Much inclusiveness.
C. Public welfare.D. Wrkers’ emplyment.
15. What is the best title fr the text?
A D future cities lk similar?
B. Is there a new kind f city?
C. What is the pint f a city?
D. What shuld cities learn frm the past?

Fr all f ur lives, cities have been, well, cities. Tall buildings, crwded neighbrhds, and gd pizza (mre r less). But what shuld a gd city lk like, really?
In the age f Zm, when wrkers are increasingly independent frm the physical ffice space, cities need t be mre than tall buildings. They need t be livable. In ther wrds, if yu can live where yu want, then cities need t be a place yu want t live.
